Author Helena Craggs expertly crafts a brilliant young adult novel and navigates the reader through first loves, sexuality, friendship, and familial unity. Readers will find the characters in the story to be entertaining, full of personality, typical teenage moods, and dedication to their cause. In addition, the author injects humor in the story which lightens the mood of some of the darker drama that they face, and the twists and turns of the storyline as they discover more information about the town, paranormal activities, and themselves, making this an unpredictable urban fantasy novel.
Craggs has done well to create realistic characters and an easy-to-follow storyline with enough action to keep readers engaged. There is a character for everyone to relate to with demons, angels, ghosts, vampires, witches, magic, and teenagers. I enjoyed reading about Quinn's character especially as we followed him on his emotional journey of discovering his own powers and learning the truth about his family.
The Younglings: Shadows & Magic is a fast-paced, jam-packed paranormal fantasy novel that is perfect for readers looking to be taken on a fantastical journey that is filled with supernatural beings and teen angst."

- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2022If you are into angels & demons, vampires & werewolves with witches as a cherry on top, you are going to enjoy this story of supernatural teens. I loved every minute of it and especially enjoyed the witty dialogue which was quite typical of teens. I will definitely recommend this lovely read and the talented author.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2023Quinn is your average teenage boy.....oh, but he's also half demon. No big deal. And his best friend is half angel. And they know a witch, a ghost, etc, etc. This book had me interested from the start, and while it could benefit from another round of editing, it was far better than I expected!
Normal teen angst and discovery paired with various supernatural beings, intreague and suspense? What could go wrong? I really liked how the story was set up to progress in a way that brought them all together as a family of beings. The surprises and unexpected turns were wonderfully written, and I loved the focus on choosing your fate.
I was also reminded, repeatedly, how dense and unobservant teenage boys are!! At least he was smart when it came to saving lives. The characters are diverse and funny, and they work together well. They're accepting of various differences, although maybe hesitant at first, and with good reason.
It's definitely one that I'd recommend, looking forward to the next.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2021Really loved the story. The characters are fun, angsty and hormonal. But what do you expect from a bunch of teenagers? Then, throw in new and exciting superpowers and it gets crazy. Time to be a “Keeper” and keep the world safe. The author does an amazing job character building and capturing those teenage years perfectly. I’m looking forward to the next book and I highly recommend this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2021I really enjoyed the smooth writing style and realistic teen dialogue. Even when the characters made me frustrated, it rang true to their youthful ages and characters. And boy, did Quinn and Eve frustrate me — notice what's right in front of your faces, for crying out loud! Kudos to the author for making me care so much. 😆
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2023I was sucked in the moment I started. Well thought out plot line.. there were a few small holes that left me with questions but overall a wonderful YA story!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2022This is the first book I've read by the author, and I am looking forward to reading more. Craggs weaves an intricate tale of teenagers caught up in a world of the supernatural, slowly finding out they are part of a rare group with unique powers. The story is filled with magic, suspense, intrigue and a lot of Harry Potter and Twilight references (which might be too much for some readers, but I enjoyed it). Just when I thought the book was at its climax, I was wrong, only to be thrust into the twists and turns that made this story so great. This book is safe for any aged reader and was truly a delight.
Some of my favorite lines from the book:
"His voice was deep and low, like rolling thunder on a stormy night."
"I was on a cerebral merry-go-round, and the stormy commotion in my head was overwhelming."
"Esme cackled like a bagpipe suffering from tonsillitis."
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2021Combine creative and fun, well-written and young main characters with an incredible attention-keeping storyline about some gifted youth and you get a mix of heaven and hell and everything in between. This book is definitely worth a read!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2023I really love a good paranormal fantasy - this book incorporated some of my favorite tropes and beings; it had a great blend of paranormal, romance, and murder mystery. I also am a huge sucker for a slow-burn romance. I enjoyed learning about Quinn and all that he is capable of, however I did find myself wanting to push through this bit to get to the next part of the story and plot after some time. At times, I get overwhelmed when there are TOO many supernatural beings to keep track of in a story, however Helena tied it all together spectacularly and created such a captivating story out of it all! I look forward to reading more of Helena’s books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read.
I read mostly crime, and mystery, thriller type novels. I do like to dip my toe in other genres once in awhile. I'm very glad I did, or I would have missed this gem.
I read-The Younglings: Shadows and Magic. Not usually a fan of vampires and the like, but I found myself drawn into this fantasy, supernatural novel.
It was a wonderful blend of fantasy, romance, and coming of age. The author created characters that were fun, unique and likeable.
I enjoyed the story line, with an unlikely group of teenagers who became loyal and devoted friends. It's a lighthearted read, threaded with humor, and fun. This novel works for all ages.
The author has a wonderful imagination, and a way of drawing you into a delightful story. Well done.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant series starter - this is addictive!!
You may all recognise this series and author as I've already read and reviewed books 2 and 3 over the last few months.
Sadly, I missed the original tour for this, book 1 and after absolutely loving the other 2 books - I raced out to buy it quick!!
Finally, I can say that I've enjoyed the beginning!
It was a little strange skipping back to the start having seen the characters develop so much over books 2&3 - but I still got that same excited feeling diving into this one! It was great to see where they all began and how their freindships formed.
The characters just jump straight off the page and you can't help but love every one of them. They are just so relatable and I love that although they're off saving the world, they're also struggling with growing up and the usual relationship and school issues that go along with this age group.
With so much crammed into this, you'd think it might get confusing - but it absolutely works so well!
This series has it all - witches, vampires, angels, demons, wolves and ghosts and a plot that will sweep you along at such a pace that it'll be over so fast!
It will leave you wanting more!
I'd recommend buying all 3 books and binging them (like I'm about to do, as I just have to re-read books 2&3 again now) you won't regret it! - although that will leave me desperate again to find out what happens in the finale in book 4!! Can't wait!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read this year
The Younglings is one of the best books I've read this year. Quinn is a normal teenager... until he figures out perhaps he's not and his father if a powerful Demon. But not only that, it seems he's not the only one, and some of his friends seem to have strange powers too. Including his high school crush, Eve, who is half angel. This makes things a little hard for Quinn, being half demon...
I love the witty style of the book, and Quinn's point of view is hilariously realistic for a boy his age.
In this book, Quinn and his friends go on a few adventures and we get to know more about them. All the characters are lovable and feel real.
The book kept me entertained from start to finish and I didn't want to put it down. I think I read it in two days because I just loved the amusing tone in which Quinn tells about his (mis)adventures and I couldn't help rooting for Quinn to get closer to Eve among the paranormal chaos they were going through. But did he? You will have to read the book to find out.
This book has angels, demons, witches and ghosts, even werewolves and vampires. But it doesn't feel like a strange mix at all, they just go together so well and the author managed to put together a great story. I can't wait for the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A strong connection
A wonderful debut novel by Craggs. I loved the storyline but the thing that drew me in the most was Quinn’s personality. I loved how Quinn was insecure, doubted himself, who he is, and what he is, and his friends’ acceptance of him regardless. Talking with someone can always make us feel better, and the insecurities and jealousy Quinn feels not only as a teenager but as a sensitive half-demon (ie being different) are well portrayed. Many readers will be able to relate to him. Friendships are tested and strengthened, boundaries are set as well as helping troubled souls. This book has it all including a touch of romance. If you love fantasy novels, check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping story of magic
"The Younglings: Shadows and Magic" by Author Helena M. Craggs is an enthralling young adult fantasy novel that features a group of young mages on a perilous quest to recover a powerful magical artifact that has been stolen from their kingdom. It is a gripping story that challenges the young protagonists both physically and mentally, as they face not only external threats but also their inner demons.
I loved the author’s impressive world-building skills and deft character development, it makes for an immersive reading experience, and the fast-paced plot keeps readers engaged from beginning to end. If you're a fan of books that are full of adventure and magic, then this series is for you!
