Review
Written in a lively and readable Spanish, Las culturas y civilizaciones latinoamericas is appropriate for intermediate and advanced students. The footnotes for uncommon words and key terms are abundant and helpful. The glossary and vocabulary list at the end of the book is truly outstanding for its multitude of concise definitions, many of which would serve students well in a Latin American literature survey course. . . For the student who has thoroughly read Las culturas y civilizaciones latinoamericas and given serious consideration to its questions for debate, thinking independently about Latin American culture and civilization should be second nature.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2023I was a student of Dra. María and I loved this book. 5 years later, I went back and reread this text before visiting Latin America. It is an excellent way of enhancing your reading comprehension as well as learning historical events from pre-Colombian America to siglo XIX. I was a beginner speaker but after reading this book and having discussions day-to-day, this book leveled up my Spanish skills. Please don’t mind the review below as this book is totally not right-wing but rather takes a holistic approach to each historical event covered. I often feel a more liberal socialist viewpoint when reading this book and other works of Dra. DePaoli’s. I am a fan of her work and would recommend this book to any reader wanting to learn Spanish or any KSU students thinking about reading this. The sentence structure is presented in a manner that is easy to comprehend and follow along to. This made class discussions and exams super easy.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2021I have been looking for an up-to-date textbook in Spanish for a Latin American Civ course. I thought this would fit the bill, but it is extremely out of date and pretty right-wing as well. It looks at Latin American history and culture through the lens of elite literary concepts like ideal vs. real. No maps or illustrations, which is a lost opportunity in an e-textbook. No coverage of populism, no economic analysis. No facts and figures, nothing to back up what is essentially a literary essay on Latin American cultures.
And I'm a literature professor. I can have my students read literature in other classes.
