Outcast (Alpine Warrior Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,566 ratings

Leon Muller, resident of the city of Bern, has it all – a wealthy family, an excellent education and a very bright future. But he throws it all away on a rash impulse and as a result is thrown into a world that is totally alien to him. Cast out of his home city, he is forced to join an army of impoverished, half-starved soldiers that is fighting for the freedom of the Swiss people.
Derided as ‘alpine shepherds’ by their aristocratic enemies, Leon and his comrades are plunged into a life-and-death struggle as the nobles and armies of the Holy Roman Empire and the Austrian Habsburgs circle the Swiss Confederation like ravenous wolves, united in their determination to wipe out the Swiss nation once and for all. It is a war of no quarter and great butchery.
‘Outcast’ is the first volume in the ‘Alpine Warrior’ series – the story of Swiss soldier Leon Muller in the wars of the 15th Century when Europe was torn apart by civil, dynastic and imperial conflicts.

Outcast (Alpine Warrior Book 1) by Peter Darman is a fantastic opening novel to the new historical fiction series about the Swiss Army and the Hapsburgs in and around the Rhine Valley and beyond. Leon Muller is wonderfully flawed and is also likable as a central character. I am looking forward to what is in store for the handsome yet modest outcast.

I look forward to the next in the series.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. If you'd like to try military historical fiction, this book is a good place to start.

I just wish the author would spend a little bit of his earnings to hire a proofreader. Very irritating to me.

As others have noted, the book is poorly edited. If, like me, you are spawn of Conan the Grammarian, you have a choice. You can set it aside or continue.
Like other historical fiction, the book is repetitive. Here come the Swiss, with like and halberds and crossbows in a disciplined formation. Either the discipline or a stroke of good fortune carries the battle, each and every time.
That being said, it is an enjoyable diversion, after mowing the lawn, best enjoyed with a cold lager.

Very precise in describing how training is the root of most successful military units. Only unskilled leaders who fail to consider all aspects fail.

Review with spoiler! I was intrigued about a historical-fiction book during the Old Zurich War. Unfortunately it is more fiction than historical in so many ways. Actually it is mostly Hollywood: take 1 or 2 (St. Jakob and Ragaz) historical events and make up the rest. Although the Swiss used to go on raids in neighboring countries (Saubannerzug, etc.), they would have never done that during a war and left their fellow Eidgenossen to fight it out. As a complete fiction book, I would give it 3 or 4 stars but as a historical based book, that should bring the unknown reader closer to a historical subject, I have to give 1 star. Average 2 stars.

This is a well researched book brimming with facts about the Swiss people during the 15th Century.
Until I read this book, I didn’t know that the Swiss were so feared during this period & it was not uncommon for them to shatter army’s that had far more numbers than the Swiss had.
Another great historical fiction book by Peter Darman.

I love it when I find a long set of books and the first one is great. The cover really grabs you ( I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but it gets you interested!). This is a part of history I’ve not read about before and it’s gripping. I’ve read hundreds of books about warfare and this is very well written with a great central character. To think that these main battles were related to actual events is amazing. Can’t wait to start the next book.
Also it’s good value as more books are becoming short / medium stories whereas this book is quite long. I loved it.

I was a bit disappointed at the beginning but after the first couple of chapters everything seemed to fit into place and is a really good novel with some true facts interlaced.

In going to carry on with this series of books.
From the first page to the last this has been a more than entertaining read and the fact that these books are somewhat historical is right up my alley so on to the next chapter.
