Shadowing Stella (Endless Mountain Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 427 ratings

When the Past Refuses to Stay Buried

After waking up in a strange hotel room with no memory of how she got there, Stella McIntyre returns to her small town as the prodigal daughter—pregnant and broken. Determined to rebuild her shattered life and prepare for her unexpected child, she finds solace in her family's faith and the comfort of her childhood home.

When handsome Army Corporal Jason Duncan notices Stella at church, he's drawn to the quiet strength behind her guarded eyes. Despite his own battle scars from Iraq, Jason is determined to break through the walls Stella has built around her heart. But as their slow-burn romance blossoms, a dangerous figure from Stella's past emerges from the shadows.

Someone is watching Stella's every move—someone who believes she belongs to him. With her premature baby fighting for life in the NICU and a stalker whose obsession escalates to violence, Stella finds herself trapped in a nightmare she can't escape alone. When she's suddenly abducted at gunpoint, Jason must race against time to find her before it's too late.

In this heart-pounding fight for survival, can faith be enough when darkness closes in? And if Stella manages to break free, can she ever truly heal from the trauma that haunts her?

Shadowing Stella is a gripping romantic suspense that deftly weaves themes of faith, healing, and second chances. Perfect for readers who enjoy small-town settings with high-stakes danger, protective heroes, and heroines on journeys of redemption.

For fans of Dee Henderson, Colleen Coble, and Dani Pettrey who crave stories where love overcomes trauma and faith conquers fear.

This was a great christian romantic suspense!
I wasn't expecting all that happened and I thought it was heartwrenching all the trials Stella had to go through, but I think Elle did a wonderful work about how hard things and tragedies can still bring good things to our life and help us grow and become better persons. This book inspired me: it has a message of deep love and forgiveness. How we can walk through anything with God by our side.
The suspense kept me on my seat until the end. It's a page turner! I was rooting for Stella the whole time...
The characters feel so real and relatable. I felt part of the story.
Also, the romance is sweet... Jason is really a hero, I loved how he accepts Stella without really knowing all of her background. It was sweet...
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a clean romatic story, mixed with intrigue and suspense!
    Elle is a great author!

She leaves home with a friend to go to Florida, her friend goes by home & she stays. Her only friends are those she works with and goes to a bar with them. A few people saw her leave with 2 men. She wakes up the next morning in a very nice hotel room and no one is there. She has no memory of how she got there and leaves. Soon she finds out she is pregnant and leaves to go home to her parents. Things begin happening. Various things are noticed - like keep seeing a particular car and other times seeing the same man. New characters are introduced into the book & you may wonder why - you will find out so keep reading. Early on she meets a man and finally agrees to go with him. She has her baby but soon after she is kidnapped.
***** There is No intimacy told in this book - you just know what happened in that hotel room after she takes the pg test. ***** This book really kept me reading.

Stella was drugged and raped, so she returns home, pregnant, where to her surprise, Jason wants to date her; but her rapist isn't finished with her yet.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: 4 -- Plot has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits. Setting is clear and believable, with only minor inconsistencies. Timeline may be a bit hard to follow. Fairly well done as far as ordering details and giving hints without giving things away too soon. Stella's rape and pregnancy didn't feel cohesive with the stalker and kidnapping piece to me, not exactly sure why. Trying to do too much, maybe. And the timeline wasn't super clear, not specifying the month or season at the start, and then leaping over large chunks of time at once.

Characters: 1.5 -- Most characters are static, dull, unrealistic, hard to understand, and even cringe-worthy. Minor characters are sketchy and two-dimensional. This is where the book really falls short. It's a decent plot, but the characters were lacking. Their dialogue felt awkward almost always, and they just didn't come to life for me. We hear that Stella is wounded by the rape, but once she's home and back at church, it's like that struggle just vanishes. We hear about the losses in Jason's life, but don't truly feel his pain, just his need for revenge and to get Stella back. There's not a lot to convince me of their love, either. I just didn't feel for them.

Mechanics and Writing: 3.5 -- A handful of typos, punctuation issues, or word errors, but nothing that seriously hinders understanding. Good use of alternating POV. Average writing, with strong parts and parts that seriously struggle. Overly detailed or repetitive in some places, but vague and sketchy in others.

Redeeming Value: 3.5 -- Incidental uplifting themes. Stella forgives her rapist before leaving Florida, and is even more forgiving after learning of Kyle's mental breakdown over his wife when he kidnaps her. She's also fairly gracious to the gossips, though they seem to make her almost angrier than Kyle does. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified, but some shaky ground, eg. Jason is NOT so forgiving, and willfully goes against what he knows God commands to seek vengeance, and goes around the police to try to find Stella. Also, Stella really probably should've followed the biblical mandate to speak the truth in love and confront fellow believers who are sinning when women from church were gossiping about her.

Personal Enjoyment: 2 -- I’m not a fan. Some good bits, but reading it felt rather like a chore. Not one I plan to re-read.

I really enjoyed the plot of the story. I found myself really wanting to know what came next.

The dialogue between the characters was a little confusing and hard to follow. When you are reading dialogue between two individuals, it’s helpful to have an idea of what those individuals are thinking or feeling in real time with the conversation. I felt that that was missing in quite a few places. It made it difficult to understand relationships between characters such as with Stella and Jason, and also with Stella and Claudia. I wasn’t really sure if the two girls actually had a good sibling bond, or if they were always at odds until the end of the book. The romance between Jason and Stella was also hard to follow. Interactions between the two lacked some feeling, and heart, and left much to be desired.

3.0 out of 5 stars okay but lacking depth

This book was okay. It had good parts but most parts seemed incomplete, jumping from situation to another without much resolution. Characters lacked depth and some things were unrealistic. At times it seemed to drag. A lot of unanswered questions. Will read book 2 since I have it and hope it improves.

2.0 out of 5 stars couldn't be bothered finishing
Reviewed in Australia on September 30, 2020
I got to between a third and a half of the way through and decided that I just didn't care what happened to any of the characters, because they all felt fake. Too much telling, not enough showing, and the scenes just felt incomplete. A few things also just didn't make sense (like the broken glass door that no one ever talked about or fixed, or the way that *SPOILER ALERT* Jason was told that she hadn't been abandoned and therefore accused her of deserting her baby's father - and she responded by kissing him - despite still apparently being uncomfortable even holding hands??). I doubt I'll try anything more by this author.

    4.0 out of 5 stars A real page-turner....
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 7, 2016
I enjoyed this romantic suspense. What Stella went through (when she initially returned home) was heart wrenching. The characters were great and it was a page-turner. [I downloaded this book based on the cover image and thought it would be a sweet romance, but wasn't expecting the suspense part. The cover doesn't really fit the genre well enough, in my opinion.]
