"Really enjoyed this one! I am a huge fan of books with complex female characters - and this one definitely has that! It was a thrill to read a book that really explored this. Great twists and a pacey plot. This is a great read for any thriller fans out there. Plus, I LOVE the cover!!"

“Dogs are one of those wonderful things that make the world a better place.” Okay, how can you not love a book with that line? This is my second (novel) read from the author, and this may have just vaulted to my favorite indie author read of the year so far (and I’ve had a LOT of good indie reads). When her imaginary friend Alicia becomes a little more than just a voice in her head, Josslyn’s world is turned upside down. Alicia has already made her do some awful things over the years, but it’s all about to come to a head when she discovers something that nobody ever wants to discover as an adult. With the perfect amount of shock and awe, and an unexpected twist at the end, this novel takes the reader to a dark place that could only be conjured up in the mind of a horror author.

I've read a few other books by this author, and I do have to say that I liked those better. (They were written more recently, so I feel as though she's really honed her craft since this one was written, which is fantastic!) That's not to say this is a bad book by any means (though there are several editing errors that made me have to double back and reread lines a few times to make sure I understood correctly), and I really enjoyed it from beginning to end, just not as much as the others I've read previously. It's such an interesting premise, and once I got into the writing style for this one, I kept turning pages to see what happened. I did figure out quite a bit of it somewhat sooner than I would've liked to, but it was still entertaining to see it all laid out once we got to that point, and the ending definitely left me wanting more.

This author is one that I'm keeping my eye on, and whenever she puts out something new, I'm going to be here for it every time.

3.5 stars rounded up because it made me want to continue the trilogy

Written in the first person, I was hooked from the beginning. It was fast paced, thrilling and funny with relatable characters, even the psychopath. We all have those inner thoughts, that person we talk to in our heads - our conscience - that keeps us from doing bad things.

Josslyn’s inner self started out as an imaginary friend she named Alicia, but Alicia is able to take over Joss’ body and do things…terrible things without Joss’ knowledge. She claims to have Joss’ best interest in mind and is trying to keep her safe but…

With many twists and turns throughout, the ending was definitely a surprise and makes you want to read the next book - which I will.

This was the first book I’ve read by Jessica Huntley, but not the last.

This is book one of this series and definitely not something I normally read. But I found it very interesting and hard to put down.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about this in the beginning. I had a feeling about one person and turned out I was right. I loved how the story unfolded and the secrets, along with the truth, were revealed.

I haven’t read anything by this author before, aside from the prequel to this book, but I will be finishing this series and checking out the rest of the books. I was provided an advanced readers copy via BookSirens. These thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book is about a woman named Josslyn. She has her own vet practice and is somewhat living her best life, or at least trying. Especially with the fact that there is also someone, a voice, that lives inside her. Her name is Alicia and she was once an imaginary friend of Josslyn. One day her parents give her a call to help them remove some things from their attic and that is where Josslyn finds a sonogram. Its of her and her twin Alicia (Dun dun dunnnnnn.) Her parents tell her she was adopted and her sister was adopted by another family. Now Josslyn wants to find her sister but Alicia, the voice in her head tells her not to. Oh, and by the way, Alicia is a psychopath which makes things even crazier.

This was an easy read, which is not a bad thing. I loved how the author kept you guessing. Who is really the "owner" of the body? Is Alicia someone or is she Josslyn's excuse to say and do things? Read this now!

A very original story that I thoroughly enjoyed! I gave 4 stars because there were several sections that were extra, didnt seem to be necessary and took away from the story instead of adding to it, so I skimmed through those areas. Sometimes less is more. Other than that, GREAT read, enjoyed the characters and the ending truly shocked me!! Definitely reading the next book!

10/5 stars. DAAAAARK. So dark but so freaking GOOOOOOOD! This is a wild ride. Josslyn is in her late 20s when she finds out she was a twin at birth and was adopted..but that's not the only secret. Josslyn has Alicia living in her head. The imaginary friend she created. That she thinks she created that is until she finds out her two was named Alicia and she has been missing presumed dead. And the Alicia in her head is one who does what she wants. She takes over Josslyn's body on numerous occasions and Joss cannot remember a thing. Joss decides to go and find Alicia's brother Peter (wasn't adopted but is the biological son of the people who adopted Alicia) to try to find out what happened and if this is actually her sister. But as the information unfolds Joss may be in a deeper than she thought. Is Alicia trying to get rid of her so she can be a real person? What really happened to Alicia? And what is Peter hiding? What will happen to Josslyn? This was a page turning, gripping book. Would definitely recommend.

Jessica Huntley was completely unknown to me,  and it was by pure chance that I came across her writings. I'm so glad that I did!
My Dark Self was my first foray into the wonderfully creative mind of Jessica.
After just a couple of pages it soon became clear to me that I was going to enjoy this story immensely. We definitely seemed to be on the same wavelength  with a
     spookily similar sense of humour.
The storyline is centred around Josslyn, who apparently has a sychopathic imaginary friend Alisia. Joss is a vet, and runs her own veterinary practice   where she lives on the a floor above.
Joss prefers animals to people, with the exception of cats who apparently don't like her! The reason for that soon becomes clear though.
That's enough of the plot for you now, no spoilers here. That would completely destroy your enjoyment of what's to come!

For me,this story was a delight to read, Jessica definitely got inside my head!
I did not want it to end, so had to restrict my reading in the later stages.
When the story came to a stop I had guessed the possible ending, but this just left me wanting more! Well done Jessica.  Can't wait to read the next instalment!
This book is a cracking good read, and I heartily recommend it to all broad minded adult readers!

My True Self here I come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully dark and disturbing!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 7, 2021
It took me a day to gather my thoughts enough to write this review. At least I think they are my thoughts, I’m not so sure now after reading this amazing and completely captivating novel.
I think we all had an imaginary friend to some extent when we were children. I know I had and, after reading this book, I am so thankful it was only a harmless bunny!
Even as adults we still tend to have an inner voice – another self to reason with, discuss our hopes and dreams with, work out our problems with and share our disappointments with – but this is just our own mind dealing with the day-to-day issues we face.
But what if that inner voice isn’t ours? What if is someone else? Or something else?
Josslyn is a strange woman. She is a loner, prefers animals to people and doesn’t care much about herself. She has only one friend and that is Alicia, a voice in her head.
Alicia first appeared as an imaginary friend to combat Josslyn’s childhood loneliness and has remained in her head ever since.
But Alicia isn’t a nice person. She is a psychopath and what she wants is to be free to live her own life, not Josslyn’s. And she doesn’t care who she hurts or destroys to achieve her desire.
Huntley takes our imaginary friend scenario to a whole new level that is dark and very, very disturbing. It is brilliantly written with perfect imagery and dialogue and it has left me thinking about this book days after finishing it. Well, I think it is me thinking about it. It might be… oh, not going there!
This is one of the best books I have read in a while. The author makes some of the well-known horror/thriller writers look like Enid Blyton.
If you like a heartwarming and cosy book, My Dark Self is not for you. But if you want to read something that is disturbing and terrifying, buy this book RIGHT NOW!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read!!

Josslyn has lived with Alicia knowingly, since she was 7. But the thing is....Alicia isn't a person, shes the voice Josslyn hears in her head.

Josslyn lives a normal life..mostly. But when Alicia takes over her body, with or without asking, she does things to 'protect' Josslyn.

This twisty tale started off with me thinking I knew where it was going to end up, but as I got to the end realised I was very wrong!! Of course there were plot lines I did guess  but it didn't make it any less enjoyable.

The story is mainly told from Josslyn's perspective, including dialogue she has with Alicia. I liked being able to have a few chapters that were from Alicia's point of view. Once I'd read her chapters it was clear then, that her motive was ALOT different to what Josslyn's was, and made for an interesting turn of events👀👀
