The Mourning Son: Journey to Dis - An Epic Dark Fantasy (Absolution of the Morning Star Book 2) Kindle Edition
The Sacred Grove awaits. The dead whisper. And the boy who carries a cursed blade walks deeper into darkness.
Erikson Gray believed that wielding Lightbearer would grant him strength. Instead, it has shackled him to a history of bloodshed and ruin. The whispers of the blade grow stronger, urging him toward paths best left untread. In search of answers, he journeys to the Sacred Grove, a forgotten land where the boundary between life and death is thin, and the trees hold secrets darker than the grave.
But the deeper Erik delves, the more the truth unravels him. The weight of his lineage, the betrayals lurking in his past, and the curse entwining him with Lightbearer threaten to break him. Allies turn uncertain, and his own reflection feels less like a boy and more like something monstrous.
As shadows coil around him and the past rises from its grave, Erik must make an impossible choice: hold onto the last fragments of himself—or surrender to the blade and become something else entirely.
The Mourning Son is a tale of unraveling identity, buried truths, and the thin line between power and corruption. In the end, there is no light without shadow. And some legacies should have been left forgotten.

About the author

Scott Austin Tirrell is known for his epic dark fantasy series Absolution of the Morning Star. He has always been fascinated by the spaces in between—the twilight hours when the world feels a little less certain, the moments when light and darkness blend into something neither, and the quiet truths whisper.
When Scott writes, it’s not just to tell a story but to explore the questions that haunt him. What if the afterlife wasn’t a release but a prison? What if the gods we revere are not saviors but jailers? What does redemption look like when you blur the lines between good and evil beyond recognition?
The messy, uncomfortable truths—the ones that gnaw at you when you’re alone, are what stimulate Scott. He plays with notions that power often comes at a price, that love can be as dangerous as hate, and that the path to salvation is rarely clear. He writes to understand why we sacrifice so much for the promise of light, even when the shadows feel more honest.
For Scott, storytelling is not about answers—it’s about opening doors. It’s about walking into the dark and daring to ask, What if? It’s about characters who wrestle with their demons and worlds where every truth has a cost.
If you’ve ever felt that pull—the sense that there’s more beneath the surface, that the world isn’t as black and white as it seems—then you and Scott just might be kindred spirits.
His upcoming book, Koen: Quills from the Raven’s Nest, a prequel to the Absolution of the Morning Star (AMS) series, is scheduled for publication by Grendel Press in 2025. The AMS series includes Dawn of the Lightbearer, The Mourning Son, Noonday in the North, Destiny of the Daystar, and the forthcoming Dusk of the Demon and Queen of the Knight. The Novice of Thanatos is also available, a first-person memoir set in the same world as Absolution of the Morning Star. This book follows eleven-year-old Mishal, a novice psychopomp in the Order of Thanatos, and is the first in a planned trilogy chronicling his spiritual growth, struggles with moral ambiguity, and the uncovering of dark secrets within the Order.
Scott lives with his wife in the Boston area.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2023WOW, the Emperors Gold, Piracy, Erik and his Norm gaurds all go down in the sea. He awakes with no memory, which is not a good thing because of where he is stranded. Jotunn, Forest people, More Gods, His Uncle E, an underground city, a pool that heals, a powerful Mage... and yet you can follow the storyline without much confusion. Pulls you right into the next book, wanting More! More! More!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2023I just finished The Morning Sun, Book 2 of the series by Scott Austin Tirrell. This book is filled with twists and turns. It has many characters. Erickson Gray, being the main character in possession of a special sword. Throughout the book there are many adventures of both friend and foe. The author writes in a very descriptive manor. One can visualize the many scenes he describes. You feel like you are right there in the middle of the battle. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, "Noonday in the North" as Erick's adventures continue.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2022Story line is interesting. Not enough action from main character focuses to much on the plot but story still moves incredibly slow, book two half way though and only two major things has happened. I feel like authors these days drag books out nobody wants to read 10 books to finish a story.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2023Fantastic read! Looking forward to the third book!

4.0 out of 5 stars This is Dark Fantasy with a Difference!
I love this story that contains tales within tales. There aren’t any big info dumps, just motives revealed through conversations and actions.
You don’t need to have read book 1, as this book stands on its own as a novel. But I recommend you do read the first as it is such a swashbuckling read!
I read the first book nearly 2 years ago, so finding the chief protagonist ship-wrecked without any memories wasn’t a problem. Like Erik, I re-discovered his past as the story unfolded. (I knew I recognised the guy with the eye-patch but couldn’t remember who he was for a few chapters!!!)
This novel is quite different from the first as all the action takes place in one land. This book focuses on the Forest People and the dangerous terrain of their land, as well as the deathly tunnels that lead to Dis. There are deceptions and revelations of truth that will keep you guessing all the way through!
This is an entertaining and inspiring read suitable for all dark fantasy lovers of any age.
