"Back to Grandmom is a professionally-written book with a heartwarming storyline. The reader's attention is captured from the very first page and keeps you that way until you reach the end. I enjoyed every word Jessica has written and was touched by the entire story." 5/5 stars by Amy Louise Hill for Readers' Favorite

Jessica D. Adams writes children's books about The Underground Toy Society that aim to teach children to love and appreciate what they have, think of others, and hopefully clean their rooms. Jessica's two daughters are the inspiration for the books, as well as co-illustrators for many of the books. Jessica also wrote short time travel books, Meeting Grandmom and Back to Grandmom, which are great stories for kids as well as adults to remember or talk about lost loved ones and family history.

Jessica has visions of The Underground Toy Society traveling around the world, with many books being created to help teach children to clean their rooms, appreciate what they have, and think of those who may not have as much. While the goals of the books are to help kids want to clean their rooms, appreciate what they have, and think of others, there are no guarantees that kids will learn these lessons. These books are for entertainment purposes and individual results may vary.

Janelle is ready to travel back in time to visit Grandmom once again as she & her sister did in Meeting Grandmom. th

However, older sister Janiece doesn't want to go. There are no electronics, just antenna TV, radios, and some cassette tapes in her Mom's youth. She is at that stage where friends, cell phones, and all the modern conveniences feel so important.

When Janelle decides to play with her Mom's old cars, she & Janeice bump heads and are thrown back to 1990 once again.

While there, they have a chance to interact with Grandmom and get to know much more about her and their mother as a little girl. This trip is especially poignant as they know their grandmom is in the beginning stages of cancer. The girls get to visit with both their grandparents, learn about favorite snacks, toys, and work together in a way they don't do at home.

This delightful, nostalgic look back in time offers many opportunities to open discussions with children about all their modern conveniences, as well as, remembering and honoring relatives that have passed on.

The illustrations for this book are beautifully done by the author's daughter Janelle. I love the way Jessica and both her daughters work together to produce their series of books. It's always a joy to have them on the blog.

This is my honest, unbiased opinion of a book I own.

Pennsylvania author Jessica D Adams successfully combines autobiography with children’s adventure stories, as in her successful series of The Underground Toy Society (seven books), and now she provides a new story in what may become the Grandmom series. Jessica is the mother of two daughters, Janiece and Janelle (the artist for the cover!), who never met their grandmother. She had passed away when their mother was just a teenager.

This entertaining and touching little story presents a fine path for honoring memories and the past and inheritance of characteristics of family. The opening shares a conflict that is the seed of the story: “No!” Janiece shouted at her little sister. “I don’t want to try to go back!” “But don’t you want to learn more about Grandmom?” questioned Janelle. “No, it will be too boring there!” complained Janiece. “There won’t be any computers or electronic tablets. I don’t want to do puzzles or play boring board games. They didn’t even have any CDs or DVDs! The only options were antenna TV, cassette tapes, and the regular old radio. How boring!”

Sound familiar? With that often encountered situation Jessica offers an alternative – a time travel for Janiece and Janelle and their toys to crash back into time – 1990 – and meet their Grandmom and discover many things – about Grandmom and her past (and their family history!) as she sees the girls in the images of their mother Jessica and Aunt Jenny. New ideas – sitting down for a meal together instead of watching television in the living room wile eating, household chores to be shared, going to church together, etc. After a solid stay in the past, the girls bang heads and return to the present – lovingly informed and respectful of memories.

Once again Jessica has created a story that is kind, thoughtful, creative and educational for children (and adults as well!). This is one fine book that children will love and learn some valuable lessons from their enjoyment of the book. Jessica Adams appears to have an endless supply of very fine stories that entertain as well as deliver warm messages. Recommended. Grady Harp, February 22

Author, Jessica D. Adams and illustrator Janelle M. Adams present this cute and meaningful book that's perfect for our times.
Janelle and Janiece get a second chance to go back to see their grandmom. Who wouldn't want to do that? They have to give up the things they do in "this time," no technology, no cell phones, and no laptops. They have fun experiencing the year 1990 and getting a visit in with their grandmom who passed before they were born.
I enjoyed this book a lot. The cover art is very sweet and readers will enjoy this book, too.

"Back to Grandmom" is an entertaining story that young readers will connect with. The story opens with Janiece and her younger sister Janelle, arguing about traveling back in time to visit Grandmom. Janelle misses her granny and remembers the warm hugs and pleasant experiences they had during their first visit. However, Janiece is upset because she remembers Grandmom had very few things that interested her. For example, Grandmom had only an old television with an antenna; no computers, no cell phones, no way to interact with her friends. But it turned out they did revisit grandmom and they learned a lot. Janience discovered she could enjoy spending time with her grandmother, while learning more about life during grandma's era.
The book begins with a dedication to the author's children, especially her mom. There is also a family tree which shows how the characters are created.
I believe young readers will enjoy the story and learn there are other ways to spend your time that don' t involve technology.

Back to Grandma is a short story that celebrates a time before computers and video games. When sisters, Janelle and Janiece clash heads, they find themselves in the home of their grandmother in the year 1989. There, they experience a simpler life with family dinners at the dinner table and entertainment without modern-day technology. It's a charming tale that can give young readers a glimpse at life in the not-too-distant past and also show them that one can have fun without iPads and iPhones. This story is appropriate for young readers or as a read-aloud to younger children.
