Endorsements
When Legends Rise is an intense sci-fi thriller merged with sweet romance in a poignant redemption story. Fans of Star Wars or Halo will love this engaging story, and romance lovers will find a familiar dynamic in a new genre.
Jake Tyson, author of The Vindicators series

When Legends Rise is a fantastic sci-fi thriller by Daphne Self. Combining elements of dystopia with assassins, interplanetary travel and themes of faith, it’s a great read for the adult Christian sci-fi fan. The main character is a man running from an uncertain past into an even more uncertain future . . . and we’re along for the ride. The minor characters are all interesting and greatly add to the story, which features jaunts to Mars and other galactic locales. Ms. Self keeps you guessing with every page, leading to an epic and unexpected conclusion well worth the read!
C.E. Stone, author of Starganauts and Starganauts: Retribution

Daphne Self’s book
When Legends Rise is a stellar blend of science fiction and Christianity. The story comes alive with personable, relatable characters, stunning descriptions, and gorgeous science fiction settings that will leave you excited to turn the page, but it also hits at the heart with a slow-burn romance, difficult decisions, and redemption for even those who have committed the worst of sins. For anyone who enjoys deep and realistic characterization, Christian themes without the preachiness that comes with so much of today’s Christian fiction, and riveting science-fiction action sequences, When Legends Rise is a must-read.

Daphne Self, formerly published as D.M. Webb, is a southern transplant in the midwest. She's the author of many books and short stories. Her children’s devotional, Balaam and the Donkey, appeared on www.devokids.com (April 2013). Between her writing the next novel and marketing her published works, she travels which makes life interesting and provides plenty of material for storylines.

Who is she really, though? A painter of wild and colorful scenes and dreamer of vivid and vast dreams are two things that describe her. Her true dream is to be a light for her Lord and write stories from the heart in hopes that it will speak to those who reads them. Her desire is for a person to accept Jesus, or a heart to be soothed from its pain and hurt, or a downhearted soul suddenly uplifted from reading her books.

This sci-fi space opera gave me Firefly vibes right from the start with the mixing and matching of cultures, but it had all the tech jargon of Star Trek. I loved the author’s detailed descriptions of Abigail’s hacking and Jules’ ship as well as the various ports that they stop at on their journey. Self obviously spent a lot of time building the details of her world, which leant itself well to drawing me in as a reader!
But one of the things that I enjoyed the most was how natural Jules’ faith experience is explained throughout the story. Although some of the characters might be described as preachy, his reactions to their conversations or instructions remain consistent with a very realistic experience for the average person. His story is not rushed. His faith is not fabricated. And when it comes to its stunning conclusion, I did not feel disappointed or taken aback…although I have to admit feeling surprised at the several surprise twists that come to light towards the end of the book. I’m certainly excited to see where the story goes from here!

“When Legends Rise” touches on many familiar science fiction basics. I distinctly caught traces of Star Trek, and Star Wars also makes a welcome nod or two. What sets this book apart is that the author is able to mix these elements into a compelling tale, one that seems simultaneously old and new.

Author Self’s characterization is first-rate. You come to know her characters—Jules, JJ, Abigail, Huey, et al—and hope the best for them. But you won’t always guess the final resolution until you read it.

The action is competent, if a bit repetitive at times. The villains are fairly bland. Sense-wise, Self turns on all colors of the sensory spectrum—her novel’s world is one the reader vividly experiences.

Jules’ movement toward transformation encompasses not only becoming human, but falling in love with Abigail. Both conditions are new to him, and he finds himself flailing at times. Members of the Coalition are on standby to help him achieve his transformations, perhaps the most important of which is becoming a Christian.

Author Self does an expert job of portraying a supportive Christian group in terms of the Coalition. They espouse compassion, forgiveness, and generosity, but likewise struggle with their sin natures. They seem like real people, not paster-of-Paris saints.

Some readers may have expected more action, but the romance is a key point in the tale, and will probably live on in successive books in the series.

“Jules mulled over that word. Free. That was what he had been wanting for so long. To be free.”

Wow!! Buckle yourselves in securely for a very wild ride with Daphne Self’s When Legends Rise. I selected this book because it was billeted as reminiscent of Star Wars and Star Trek. I also found several nods, in my opinion, to the childhood tale of Pinocchio, at least in the first part of the book.

A genetically altered assassin, whose job it is to hunt down and destroy the Christian Coalition in the Galaxy, finds himself about to be decommissioned. Fleeing his former Global Federated Territories squads, he searches for a friend who defected GFT after their last joint engagement. He pilots a cargo interplanetary ship as his cover, while transporting a few humans as he continues his search.

Much of the novel centers around the time on his ship, the Nightingale, with his coder/second-in-command Huey, his med-tech Anya, who supplies him with life-sustaining serum, and an unknown traveler, Abigail du Soleil.

I enjoyed the space details and felt the fear Abby has of being too close to outer space in many situations. The medical details were intriguing as they were revealed. In keeping with the Star Wars theme, there was a lot of space travel and fighting with advanced weaponry. You will definitely be anxious to discover if Jules can indeed break free from who he was created to be. And will he be loyal? To which side? I appreciated the inclusion of Scripture that guided the Christian Coalition and the path of salvation being clearly shown. Self also shows that life doesn’t become automatically easy once one chooses Christ, but there are still hard choices many characters must make, just as in real life.

If I had to describe the book in three words, I would say: riveting, terrifying, emotional. Grab it for yourself as this is the first of five in a sure-to-be sensational series!!

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own ebook. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

    Notable Quotables:

“…things are always in motion. We live for today and let tomorrow worry for itself. We are not guaranteed safety in this world.”

“…forgiveness is not earned. It’s given.”

“You are okay now. I promised you I would keep you safe, and I meant it.” Her finger reached up and traced his bottom lip. “Some promises cannot be kept.”

This book keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Not only action, but romance was infused as well. I loved the analogy of what the main character faced and salvation. The guilt faced by the main character even though he was forced to become who he was is familiar to the human condition. Thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series.

Any book that can keep me in the edge if my seat right up to the last page and then leave me searching for more, in spite of the fact that I know it is PURE FICTION, is worth every second of my time!
I am irritated that I have to wait for book three to be written and cannot wait to read it.
Is there a way I can register my interest? I want to get it the moment it is published!

This is an intriguing book but insightful and with depth. It makes you think and observe and see the world around you in a different light.

    So worth it!
