Julian
Ruby was my universe. She was all I ever wanted. Then she left me in the dark the summer after grad with a shattered heart, all my dreams dead. The only place I’ve seen her face is on the televisions hanging in high-class kitchens around the world, haunting me. On the eve of our tenth high school reunion, she’s suddenly back, and I don’t know why. My hardened heart is cracked open like an egg. Though I never stopped loving her for a moment, how do I know I still want her? I’m not the same man I was then.
Ruby
Ten years ago, I buried the lede when I betrayed the love of my life and abandoned him to pursue my journalism career. Few people know what happened, and Julian isn’t one of them. Burning with ambition, derailed by loss, I left Julian on the farm to travel the world, investigating others’ strife and trouble. Ten eventful years have passed, and I’m finally back in Port Cam. Now I have to tell Julian the truth. After what I’ve been through, I’m not sure what I want or what I’m capable of, but the one thing I need is forgiveness.
Can their ten year high school reunion give these star-crossed lovers the ingredients to re-write their story?
Author’s Note: A steamy, swoony second chance romance with a big-hearted hero out to save the world one dish at a time, and a wounded heroine who is starting to think hearth and heart might be the balm to heal her broken spirit.

The Reporter's Unlikely Reunion: The Most Unlikely To Series, Book 1 by MaryAnne Clarke revolves around the rekindled relationship between a reputable war correspondent, Ruby Zimmer, and her high school sweetheart - local farmer and chef Julian Michaels. The two reconnect at their tenth class reunion which Ruby attended unexpectedly after returning for some much-needed R&R when a work assignment went awry. Ten years previously, Ruby left Port Cam and her boyfriend Julian without any explanation. It was later learned that she had enrolled to study journalism in Wisconsin and went on to become a famous war correspondent. Ruby only returned to Port Cam during the week of the reunion and felt compelled to attend after much urging by her old friends. When Ruby and Julian eventually meet, sparks fly between them. Will they revive their relationship?
A pleasing aspect of The Reporter's Unlikely Reunion is that MaryAnne Clarke crafts wonderful conversations filled with wit and humor between the characters. The plot is realistic, making this romantic novel a drawcard for those who love the genre. Ruby and Julian are portrayed as strong, successful, ethical people, yet remain credible, enabling readers to relate to them. The themes of friendship and love emphasized in the book are bound to motivate readers to re-examine their personal relationships. This moderately-paced book ensures that readers can share a few steamy love scenes and many memorable moments. The book is a fantastic read in which Clarke shows impeccable skill in breathing life into a wonderful love story.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2023Sometimes it is really hard to find out that you are wrong. When that happens, everyone concerned wants to tell you what you should do. That really doesn't help most of the time. This author used that so well in this book. I hope to see the next book soon!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2021This is a well-written and well-researched story. The writing is passionate and the characters are strong and likable. The ending is perfect.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2021The 10 year reunion, a group of friends, some haven't seen each other in 10 years. This book tells the story of Julian and Ruby from both sides, but you also get to meet the rest of the gang. A diverse group and you get a glimpse into their lives too. Very well written, I read an advance copy getting a chapter a day, that I eagerly awaited to read after work each evening.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2022Ruby is a journalist traveling to foreign wartorn countries, putting her life at risk to get the story. Now her career is at a crossroads and she has decisions to make, so she returns to her hometown for a visit. Reconnecting with her high school friends, she learns that their ten year reunion is the next day and gets roped into going. She never expected to still have strong feelings for her ex, Julian, who she left without an explanation when she went to college. Now, she'll have to face the mistakes of her past if she ever hopes to move on.
Julian, confused and heartbroken after Ruby unexpectedly abandoned him, went to train as a chef in Europe. Now, back at the farm he grew up on, he's determined to create his own restaurant with fresh home grown ingredients. He caters the reunion as a way of finding support for his fresh food initiative. But with Ruby back in town, he's not sure he can face her. He just wants an explanation for why she left without a word. The answer is more devastating than he ever could have believed. Can he ever find a way to trust her again?
Starting this book was like my own high school experience all over again. It was a private school where most of the students had grown up together for years and I was the outsider. I got dropped into this tight knit group of friends and I was so confused by all the characters. But as this story moved along, I got to know most of them and started to enjoy the experience (unlike my real life story lol). Julian had every reason to hate Ruby, but I loved his sensitive loving heart, willing to give her another chance. At least I don't have as many new characters to meet in the next book! Sometimes it feels like too much information as little bits of their history are revealed with no explanation or background and I'm left hoping nothing is too relevant to the rest of the series that I'm expected to remember later. Overall I thought it was a fun and lighthearted read. I enjoyed meeting all the animals on the farm, especially Nutmeg the alpaca.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2021This is the 3rd book I've read written by MaryAnn Clarke; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
This is the 1st book in the Most Unlikely to Series. It’s been ten years since Ruby just up and left town to pursue her journalism career leaving Julien behind and heart broken. Now she’s back for their ten year reunion and hopes she can get him to forgive her.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2022This is the first in a new series and this is Julian and Ruby’s journey. For Julian family and friendships mean everything to him, while Ruby she is alone. After graduation Ruby leaved to pursue her career in journalism, leaving a heartbroken Julian behind. Now 10-years later Ruby is back for their high school reunion, and she needs Julian’s forgiveness. This is a good story which is fun, and with humor, family, friendships, emotions, forgiveness, and love, which leads to an entertaining page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2021Couldn’t get the book to fully download regardless of which app I used or how many times I tried downloading. No where in the book description did it mention only being a sample, which I wouldn’t have signed up for, but the end of the file even says thank you for reading a sample so I guess I got what was provided. With that I can’t give a full review just a sample because that’s all I was supplied. So a sample review for a sample chapter…Julian seems like a nice guy so have no idea why someone would cut him out of her life for a decade. His “girls” are likable and seem extremely close so again have no idea why one of the pack would drop them for a decade. Which brings us the the dropper, Ruby. Ruby is in town after said decade for some unknown decision making which just happens to be the exact weekend of their reunion and expects to walk in and everyone is fine with her ten years of ghosting. That’s all I know. You decide from there.

5.0 out of 5 stars The story I never knew I needed.
If you like swoony, second chance romances with four dimensional characters and a little spice, please pick this one up!
Ruby is back in town for the first time in 10 years after hightailing it without a word shortly after graduation. Julian is seemingly right where she left him, just as heartbroken and in love with her as when she left. She’s at a crossroads in her career and he’s gaining momentum, building his dream. 10 years ago, they were of one mind, inseparable, and planning their future. What happens when they meet again at their high school reunion, unexpectedly?
The longing between these characters is palpable throughout the whole book. There is so much between them (the good, the bad, the tension), and you are on the edge of your seat, rooting for them to work it out and find their happy ever after. Clarke’s writing conveys their love and hurt so beautifully and I most definitely fell in love with Jules. There’s just something about a man who cries and shows his feelings without shame.
As well as navigating their relationship, Ruby’s dealing with her own demons and self-doubts, and only wants to know what to do with the rest of her life. Even with very little in common, I related to her a lot.
Jules’ passion for sustainability channelled my own and I love how it is a major part of his story. I want my own passionate, environmentally conscious, vulnerable, farm boy chef. Sigh.
I loved how real the characters felt, even the secondary ones. They were all so human and flawed and relatable. I never had a friendship group like Ruby and Jules’ but by the end I was wanting to attend my own reunion ASAP.
Bonus points for some diverse characters, ADHD and autism rep, and for setting up the next book well.
I am SO ready to read the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 year high school reunion focusing on Julian and Ruby.
This book the first of a series focuses on the relationship between Julian and Ruby. Julian is a chef who cooks with sustainable seasonal ingredients. He also has a farm , and he uses his farm produce as well as woods produce in his cooking. Ruby is a nationally known foreign correspondent. I was provided with an Advanced Reader Copy for this review, but I have also purchased a copy as I want to re-read this book. You can bet that I will follow this series.
Enjoyable read, well written. I was anxious to read the next episode every day. Not many books that hold my attention like that. Well done Mary Ann Clarke. I am a fan !

5.0 out of 5 stars YAY! A shiny new series from MaryAnn Clarke!
Ruby and Julian’s story is engaging, plausible and a reflection of the challenges that modern couples must negotiate to make true love work. When they finally, after so many years and so many hurdles and so much hope, made it to their HEA, tears were running down my cheeks as I read
This feels like a combination of This is Us and Friends; you get a strong sense that these are people that you’d want to meet in real life. I’m looking forward to getting to know the rest of the characters SOON! Hint, hint, Dear Author!
