Screaming in Autopilot Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

How do you forgive someone who has wronged you so terribly, yet feels they did nothing wrong? Kris Ball's words grab the reader by the hand and take them on a life-long journey to answer this question. Ball's tightly woven tapestry of devastating turmoil beginning with childhood abuse and abandonment that slowly unravels into an adulthood mired with depression, alcoholism, and dysfunction, will both astonish and touch the readers' hearts. She paints a picture of loneliness and heartache, but assures the reader that healing is possible through laughter and the passage of time, and that there is freedom in letting go of anger. Ball extends a hand of hope for all victims of abuse.

This book of poetry is full of lovely and, at times, haunting writing. I think I felt nearly every emotion possible while reading and could not put it down until I had read every story and poem, ending with the lighthearted "night crunchers", which made me literally laugh out loud. Ball's writing is raw and brutally honest, and I can only imagine the courage and feelings of vulnerability her writing this beautiful collection of poems and stories evoked for her. Reading this book will help anyone see how past trauma can shape your life and mind forever, and it is a wonderful reminder to those who have experienced past trauma that they are not alone when it is so very easy to feel that way. We need more people like Ball to be willing to share their honest thoughts and feelings and to make us feel that our own thoughts and feelings are valid, no matter what society tells us. Wonderful job on this lovely collection, Kris Ball, and I will not hesitate to read any more collections you may publish.

Kris Ball has a profound way of pulling the reader into her thoughts and memories where they experience her sadness, anger, and pain as they bear witness to her strength, courage, and even her sense of humor. It has been a long time since I read something that moved me to tears, but Screaming In Autopilot did just that. Each piece is beautifully written in a way that portrays Ball's thoughts, feelings, and experiences - whether "good" or "bad" - in a way the reader can empathize with and even relate to. Poems like "Catalina" and "Sword" broke my heart in a way I never knew I could feel, while those like "Forgiven" and "Script Writer" made my heart ache for Ball.

I’m not what you’d call a poetry person but I liked this book. It’s kind of a hybrid as it not exclusively poetry. It got some deep meaning full stories and some light hearted fun.
    Highly recommended.

It was interesting. I was saddened at how much abuse, both mental and physical, can happen to innocent little souls. I am also amazed at how she can still see the beauty in life. Very impressive!

I read this through in one sitting, couldn’t even breathe it was so powerful. Incredibly personal, yet sadly so universal.

I’ve been reading and writing poetry for most of my life. And to pour out your life’s successes and woes is like inflicting a small cut to illicit your ink for writing. I can tell as things change from a child like wonder to a disheveled adult. And I get every bit of it. Some were even hard to read as if the author plucked the memory right out of my mind. Well done Kris. Only we understand what it’s like to wear these poems like scarlet letters or sachets of sorrow. You represent them well.

A collection of mainly poems which will make you think. Some are wonderfully uplifting, others genuinely quite disturbing. But always thought-provoking. Highly recommended.
