Tanya Anne Crosby writes some of the most entertaining historical romance novels ever--period. There's not a single one that I haven't absolutely loved! This latest one is no exception.

HIGHLAND SONG is a novella that revisits all of the characters from the first four books in The Highland Brides Series (#1 The Mackinnon's Bride, #2 Lyon's Gift, #3 On Bended Knee, and #4 Lion Heart). I just love it when readers get a glimpse of the couples from previous stories along the way. It's like a big happy reunion. In this story, it's finally time for the last of the Brodie men, Gavin, to find happiness.

Tired of living under the same roof with his head-over-heels in love brothers and their wives, Gavin begins building himself a new home away from the manor. As he is there working, a beautiful woman, naked but for her blue paint appears. Is she a faerie? Who is she? All Gavin knows is that he is happier with her than without.

Catriona has escapted her kidnappers and needs a place to hide. When she happens upon Gavin, he seems kind and gentle. Although she won't tell him who she is for fear of him returning her to her captors, she finds herself comfortable with the big Scot. Would it be so awful if she stayed with him and didn't return home?

The dialogue between the two as they work to finish Gavin's home is some of the laugh-out-loud funniest ever. This most certainly is a novella that is fun and enjoyable to read. I loved every minute of it and hated to see it end!

And you don't have to have read the entire series to be able to enjoy this short story. It stands quite well on its own--but you will enjoy it even more when you have read the full-length stories of the other characters. They are like the wonderful meal that leads up to the happy little dessert that is HIGHLAND SONG. I highly recommend the entire series!

This might be a novella but it still is a fairly good story! Ms. Tanya Anne Crosby is able to tell such an intriguing story no matter what its length. This is the fifth book of the highland brides series and Gavin the hero of highland song did make an appearance a few times in several of the previous novels. I did have a few issues with Gavin being a likeable alpha attractable hero to fall in love with since I had a hard time seeing him fall for anyone or vice versa. Gavin had the noble saintly behavior down pat but to be the alpha swoon worthy type of hero was just hard to imagine. Sure he was handsome but he spent more time in prayer than any of the rest of his family or some of the other heroes in the highland brides series. I really thought Gavin would want to join the church or become a priest. He seemed that he spent more time in the chapel in prayer than interested in any female. Now Catriona the spunky happy go lucky outspoken heroine I just instantly loved her. She was not scared of anything and would even run about naked with blue paint on even bringing priestly Gavin to think all sorts of lustful lascivious thoughts. She would constantly tease Gavin trying to get him to loosen up and stop being so utterly conservative.
Gavin after seeing his wild brother Colin suddenly is tamed of his rogue ways with all women is married to a woman that he is able to stay faithful too. Gavin feels lonely and apart from his family since everyone of his family decides to get married. He escapes into the woods deciding to build a cottage and live by himself and just enjoy nature and possibly grow a garden. Gavin’s perfect idyllic lifestyle is ruined and thrown out of course when Catriona comes into his world messing things up, laughing at him for wearing a dress and giving Gavin something to laugh about.
I just don’t know why Ms. Crosby wrote this as a novella when it easily could have been a full-length novel. I guess I wanted more about Catriona developing more of a relationship to Gavin which there is very little of this in the novella. Yes, we hear how both of them physically desire each other but since we really get to see Gavin’s relationship with the rest of his family and his love of them. We see some of the other characters from the highland brides series that at times it does get overwhelming like there is too much plot twists thrown into the story that I think it would have been better if it was written as a full-length novel and there really doesn’t seem to be strong love between Gavin and Catriona. Yes, there is a very physical lustful attraction whenever they see each other like all they wanted to do was get into each other’s pants but this isn’t deep-abiding forever to die for type love. Gavin and Catriona needed more interactions with each other I thought for their relationship to be built on. I still immensely enjoyed the story, the other books in the series and definitely want more of the series so in a sense I don’t mind the novella and don’t want Ms. Crosby to stop writing about these wonderful characters either. That is why I rated the story four stars, can recommend it for anyone who adores this series and will get more from Ms. Crosby!

Catriona is on the run from King David who has taken her captive as his pawn. He wants to wed her to an Englishman to get her brother Aiden, a northern rebel chieftain in line. They are the last of the painted ones who keep the old ways alive.

Gavin feels he’s lost his way as far as his faith is concerned. His brothers and sister have married and he is feeling the need to move to his own place. He is in the process of building when he comes upon Cat on his land. She’s ‘nekkid’ and painted in ‘woad’ and he is having a hard time deciding if she’s fey or real. All he knows is she makes him want to feel something he hasn’t wanted in forever. She will not share anything about herself. He can’t understand why he’s falling in love with this woman he knows nothing about. All he knows is that his faith has been restored through her.

King David, Gavin’s brothers, and Cat’s brother are coming from different directions, as they find them together. Arguments ensue and Gavin makes a stand. They will have to strike him down where he stands before he lets them take her. He claims her as his wife and King David realizes that to keep her would cause war so he leaves. She admits to her brother and Gavin’s brothers that she is indeed in love with him and they all accept it as so.

With this lovely novella and much-anticipated Gavin’s story, Tanya Anne Crosby ends her ‘Highland Brides Series’ and I for one am very happy to see him get his lady love his own happy ending.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my week’s reviews of these books as much as I’ve enjoyed reading them. Please give this author a try. I can’t tell you how much joy her books have brought me.

Although this is a novella, I thoroughly enjoyed it, when I’ve read this authors books before. I’ve always loved the fact that she makes me giggle with her stories. Although there is serious bits in them there is always parts of it that just make you giggle and this was no exception. It was a lovely romance.

This nicely written piece was un-demanding: just what is required sometimes.

Straight forward plot, and pleasant characters.

There is no doubt in my mind that I would re-visit this author. In fact, I've now downloaded The Highland Brides box set.
