A Truthful Man: A Modern Catholic Novel: Book 1 (A Modern Catholic Trilogy) Kindle Edition
In his tiny parish on the English coast, Father James has remained untouched by the modernizing of the Catholic Church. But when he’s handed evidence of serious wrongdoing by Mark Boulder, an ex-university friend, he is obliged to take it to his bishop. He refuses a bribe to drop the case, and the bishop brings swift retribution upon him.
Mark is riding high until his brother-in-law, the bishop warns him about the evidence from Father James of a scandal which could ruin his flourishing investment business.
Alarmed, Mark tries to dissuade the priest from pursuing justice against him, for the sake of their old friendship. But Father James cares far more about the man’s eternal salvation than his secular ambition. He stands firm, and suffers more reprisals from his bishop.
Details of Mark’s malfeasance reach the media and he becomes wanted by the police. With his reputation in ruins, and shunned by his wife, children and the bishop, he realizes only one person can rescue him: the very priest whose vocation he has destroyed.
Can Mark humble himself to ask the priest’s assistance?
If he does, why should Father James help him?
The clash between traditional Catholic teaching and its compromised modern equivalent reaches a climax in this novel by a multiple bestselling Amazon author.

About the author

Horses captivated Hilary as a seven-year-old. Decades later, they still do. When her father replaced the family television with a book allowance for her and her brother, he was hoping they’d buy the classics. Hilary bought books on horses.
Every spare moment was spent in the attic, losing herself in the enchanting worlds of Ruby Ferguson’s Jill Books and the complete series of Flicka by Mary O’Hara, among others. She also purchased multiple tomes on horse care and obsessed about owning a pony.
Hilary also managed to almost fail English in school – somewhat unusual training for a future best selling author.
Happily, her childhood dreams were realized, and she has owned many horses. Her current equine soulmate, Cruz Bay, is a homebred Thoroughbred Welsh Cob cross. She competes with him in dressage and aspires to joining The Century Club one day, where the combined ages of horse and owner add up to one hundred!
Hilary’s Christian faith was growing at the same time as her riding skills improved and she rediscovered the ultimate goal: getting to Heaven. Her writing combines the beauty of horses with the truth of the Gospel and she hopes her books will encourage readers to join her in striving for that goal.
A note for readers of her Catholic books: The traditional Latin Mass is not available where she lives, so Hilary attends the Novus Ordo Mass at her local parish church, which is blessed with three holy priests who celebrate it with reverent devotion.

I put it up there with some of my author's of books I read over many times.
Roseamund Pilcher. ( my apologies, I'm sure I spelled her name wrong.) There are a few more but I don't want to misspell them as well.)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2023""A Truthful Man (Book 1)" by Hillary Walker includes a collection of interesting characters.
Mark Boulder finds himself with several self-inflicted problems, big problems. A parish priest, Father James, successfully meets the challenge of standing his ground in the face of pressure from a superior. The book describes the results of ignoring God’s Law and the benefit of acknowledging guilt.
Nice balance of telling an interesting story and describing challenge the church faces in our modern, secular world.
Also nice descriptions of the town of King’s Brambling. Tea with scones, Devon clotted cream and home-made strawberry jam comes up occasionally — if you have not experienced this treat you should try it.
Leviticus 19:11 Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not deceive one another.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2024A stellar novel for its:
-well developed plot lines and characters
-real life Catholic in-your-face problems within both clergy and laity
-real life solutions (i.e., consequences for bad actions, but joy in a repentant heart)
-none of that syrupy goody-two shoes characters
I am VERY excited to start book two. The only "problem" I see on the horizon is that there are only 3 novels with these characters that I fear I am NEVER going to get out of my head!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2022This book reminds me of the Fr. Brown series on PBS. The world around us is changing around us and in our church Im 75 and enjoyed reading this book so much that I read in a day and a half. It reflected how I feel about our church today that I love so much. I also feel its going in the wrong direction. I was always taught to love everyone regardless of race or religion and didn't have to be told constantly to agree with all this materialism that everyone puts above more important things in life. I ordered the 2nd book as soon as i read the first one!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2022This story is an all too accurate picture of the trials and tribulations of faithful priests in thrall to Modernist bishops. It also gets to the heart of faithful Catholics being led by wolves in Shepherd's clothing and misuse of power. She accurately portrays the ongoing battle for hearts, minds, and souls for reverence over relevance, evangelization over relativism, universal Truth over individual truths, Faith over politics, and natural moral law versus man's law.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2023A very gripping, quick read that for some, describes the path the Church is treading. Compassion replaces obedience CC e to commandments, a "good life" is preferred to living a Good Life.
A non Catholic may not understand what the fuss is about. It is not just Latin vs English, or Gregorian chants vs pop liturgy, but rather a reverence for and obedience to the full measure of faith found in the Catholic Church.

5.0 out of 5 stars Many Tragedies but Not Tragic
The story is straightforward. It is an exposé of tragic happenings in some dioceses today. I am a retired priest with some sad memories but I never regretted God's beautiful gift of the priesthood. I was ordained in 1972 so I have lived through it all. But this latest business of creating cancelled priests is beyond me. Although the storyline is black and white It is refreshing in its matter of factness. If it seems to be a sermon at times it is a needed sermon. As a very young priest caught in a crisis of obedience a nun friend taught me a great distinction. Authority is a necessary component of any organisation. Authority contains the power given by God, the organisation, and society to accomplish the proper ends for which the authority is given. Autocracy is taking legitimate authority and using it to accomplish one's own ends, often perverting proper obedience to subservience. We are bound to obey proper authority but never autocracy. As my catechism teacher aught me when I was ten: you do not owe obedience to parents, priests, the pope or anyone if they command you to sin. Thanks for letting me give my own summary sermon. I will be recommending this series to others as a way to see how the lines are drawn for the battle. Fr. Bob B
