Into a Strange Land (The McGunnegal Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 65 ratings

The McGunnegals are all strange, and it has been that way for generations. They are too strong, or too fast, or too smart, and odd things happened when they are around. The neighbors say they are witches or devils, or have been snatched by changelings. Mothers hold their children close when they walk by, fearing they might catch the McGunnegal strangeness. But misfortune besets them when their mother, Ellie, disappears, followed by their crazy grandfather, but not before he reveals a family secret to Colleen and Frederick - a secret that reveals the source of their strangeness, and also threatens to cast the dark shadow of famine on Ireland. He has opened a portal to the world of the Others, where their mother has gone, and a dark creature - a goblin - has come in her place and is spreading death and disease. They fall through this portal, and find this strange land filled with dark creatures that are crushing its people and now threaten to come through the portal and take up their abode in the world of Men, as they once did long ago. Yet in this dark world of oppression, this poor family discovers who they are, and also what it means to be truly human.

Ben Anderson is the author of the McGunnegal Chronicles, a song writer, rock climber, backpacker, outdoor enthusiast, father, husband, and Orthodox Christian.

When his children were young, he told them bedtime stories almost every night, and these stretched out for years. They enjoyed these so much that they encouraged him to write them down, and these became The McGunnegal Chronicles.

Ben gathers inspiration from the great outdoors, fairy tales and legends, the teachings of the Orthodox Church Fathers, and from the funny and amazing stories that people tell.

From the pits to the shores--of Ireland to Wales, this story snares the imagination and imprisons it to the end, leaving the reader wanting more.

The characters are lovable and hatable--from Colleen to Mable--they fit the description of the have nots and the haves who are so greedy they are willing to do anything to satisfy their greed.

I loved the inference to Christianity throughout within and without the sequence of events and rallied around Colleen's family at every turn.

I also could not miss the inference regarding other fairy tales and I think the author managed to include them all--especially the subtle reference to Sleeping beauty. At any rate, the goblins, the gnomes, the leprechauns, fairies and elves kept my imagination honed for the next reveal and of course the goblins and witches and magic everywhere.

There are a few proofreading issues, but they are not so many that they distract. I think behind the attempts to capture the Irish brogue and the English along with the language of the magical lands, the author may have stopped proofreading, but the tale is one that will live in the mind of the readers for a very long time.

I eagerly anticipate the author's ability to maintain an interest and the development of his characters in other books. Way to go!

My daughter is 7 years old, a bit younger than the target audience. She loves this story and doesn't want me to stop reading at night. On a mere story level, it is very engaging. The deeper themes encountered through the characters and plot will lead to opportunities to discuss important spiritual and moral issues with older children. The McGonnegal family is a wonderful example of a close family who is bonded together by love, hopeful resilience in times of struggle and a transforming faith.

I finished reading Into a Strange Land and enjoyed it thoroughly. It is a delightful book and reminds me a little of the Hobbit. I appreciated the pace of the book. It was never boring. The best thing about it was the refreshingly clean writing, which allows me to recommend the book for any age. I especially liked the allegory and allusion to scripture. Into a Strange Land is full of hope and good. It does indeed whisper of deep things and give clean adventure.

I would recommend the book for any age and am sure it would make a nice bedtime storybook to read to kids. I just have to read the next book and am looking forward to it.

I enjoyed this book and hope to pass it onto my sons for their enjoyment. The story is reminiscent of "The Hobbit" and the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. While I liked the action/adventure story, I thoroughly enjoyed the Judeo-Christian lessons and metaphors found throughout the story. Is Ben Anderson the next J. R. R. Tolkien or C. S. Lewis? I look forward to reading the second and third books of this trilogy!

Really holds your interest. Bought it on a whim when I met the author at an Irish Festival and didn't get a chance to read it for a while. But the plot is very interesting and the writing is done in such a way that it holds your interest throughout the book.

I read quite a few books that are intended for middle school or young adult readers. This book combines Irish lore with some good principles for this age group. The action in the book keeps it moving quickly and I can't wait for the sequel to be published. I'd highly recommend this book for older children and adults who love a good story!

No idea that I would have to buy not one but two more books to find out what happens to the heroine and the siblings she has been separated from. Seems somewhat inspired by the Wizard of Oz, as the family ends up separated by something unusual happening, and there are lots of different sizes of human-resembling folk, plus the heroine is only 13 years old and ends up in a different world. It did keep me up late many nights to see what would would happen next, but not saving to my Kindle, which holds many books with stand-alone endings.
