The Sacrifice (Dragonpets Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

I can’t remember…

Why did I agree to be chained up and left out for a dragon?
And why did I let them dress me in this freezing finery?
Wait...what's that?
This dragon isn't at all what I expected.
Smarter.
Funnier.
Sadder.
And maybe not a monster, after all.
Still, I'm not at all sure I want to stay with him, buried beneath the earth.
What choice do I have, though?
My real enemy is still out there.
And I won’t let him have me.

Dragonpets: The Sacrifice is the first book in R. L. S. Hoff’s new YA fantasy series, which features strong young women in a society not ready for them. (Includes significant but clean romantic elements.)

L. S. Hoff and her family live in a just-big-enough house with a messy yard in view of the Rocky Mountains. They keep planning to hike in the hills on weekends but often get no farther than the park across the street. When not writing or working at (so far) more profitable gigs, R. L. S. Hoff enjoys reading, gardening, and baking bread.pencilprincessworkshop.com

R. L. S. Hoff is a life-long book lover who grew up as a modern nomad, with roots in five states. Once she graduated college, she took her travels abroad. After about a decade living in China, she has now settled in Colorado with her three kids (one adopted, two bio), her dog, and her spectacularly supportive and brilliant husband.

She writes mostly young adult science-fiction and fantasy. When she's not writing, editing, tutoring, or parenting, she hangs out with friends from church or dabbles in gardening and baking. Her favorite thing to grow is rhubarb, and her favorite thing to bake is kringle. Her favorite stories (to read and to write) have strong female characters and amazing new worlds to explore.

Beautifully done Fantasy novel in a girl, Rilla is chosen to be the Princes wife....or so it seems! She wakes on a mountain top dressed in silks remembering she is being sacrificed to the dragon vidhar. ... but why? She can't remember how she got here and how she became a sacrifice.
Enter a journey of understanding Dragon relationships, bonds and marriage while Rilla who trusts no one has to trust Vidhar because she just has no one else.
The danger lurks as another dragon wants Rilla for his own and will stop at nothing to get her
Can she learn to trust, and fall in love? Will they survive the many attempts at her kidnapping and poor communication about dragon relationships?
This is very well done with multiple layers in these interesting characters that made me want so much more than the story left me with... bring on the sequel!!

    The Sacrifice (Dragonpets Book 1)
    By R.L.S. Hoff

    3 out of 5 Stars

The Sacrifice was an easy read. It took me a few tries but once I got into it I was able to finish it the same day. The thought process of the book is interesting and has a lot of potential. I can't wait to see the characters develop in the following books. If this book pokes your curiosity as it did for me you should go ahead and give it a try. Just be mindful that this book is targeted for YA and it delivered just that.

This was a lower age YA bordering heavily on a children's book. Minimalistic character development worldbuilding and juvenile dialog, That said, it is perfect for a young teen. Clean and free of swearing with off page alluding to fighting and death of the villain. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book from Netgalley.

I want to start off saying that this is a YA book targeted for the YA audience. If you are looking for something darker or *spicier* this is not for you.
That being said, I really enjoyed this book. It's the first book in the Dragonpets series and I'm excited to read the others. I liked the premise of the book; however, I feel like the author could have flushed out Rilla's and Vidar's characters a bit more along with the plot line. Again, the premise is there and I think there's a lot that can be done with what R.L.S. Hoff has set up. This was a very quick read for me at less than 200 pages. There are romantic elements; however, they are very clean and age-appropriate. I would definitely recommend this YA book.

I can't believe the first part to this series is over. I love the character development between Rilla and Vidar as they struggle between their new bonds and fight against Sir Drake and the purple dragon. The telepathy, bonds, and a protected library full of magic captivated me to the fullest. I need the second book to come out asap so we get more of the map magic and Rilla's powers, maybe more of Vidar being human and children between the two!!

This is the first book I have read by this author & I downloaded it on a whim. I was enthralled from the first chapter. I literally could not put it down. Solid character building, solid world building and an effortlessly flowing story sold me on this book. I am looking forward to checking out other books by this author & what is written in the future.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

    Wonderful book!
It draws you in and keeps you interested. I love the way it is written and so descriptive. The characters are few in detail but you still understand them and what they are going for. I usually go for more modern books but I was drawn into and keep captive the whole book. I was disappointed when it ended.

I thought this was a steady, enjoyable read. Easy to escape within, not too heavy of a plot but a nice balance. I really enjoyed watching Rilla and the dragon form a friendship and Rilla’s growth throughout the story.

She definitely finds her independence and gains some much needed confidence by the end of the book.

Overall, a good read perfect for younger audiences.

The Sacrifice is the first book in the Dragonpets series by R.L.S. Hoff. It is an original Young Adult fantasy with dragons, magic, mythical creatures, humour, banter, romance, and more.
The story was a cute and fun read, with interesting and creative world-building- but I would have loved for it to have been longer, ‘meatier’, and more in-depth. I really feel that the story would have benefitted from a little more depth and development. There are times where the story felt a rushed or skimmed over- while other parts felt like a bit of an info dump or ramble.
Overall, a fun read- but with a little tweaking this could become quite a stellar read. Will have to see how the rest of the series develops from here.
    Happy Reading…

    Thank you, R.L.S. Hoff!
