- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2018Ellen is an intriguing and fascinating look into the life of a rock band as it evolves, but it's also a character study of a young woman overcoming a terrible tragedy that leaves serious scars -- both physical and psychological. The romance steps away from the usual cliches and tropes, exploring the passion of performance.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2021Ellen was SUCH a fun book to read! It feels like a romance novel meets VH1’s Behind the Music. It really was incredibly entertaining. I tore right through this one!
I imagine anyone who has been involved in music, or has ever dreamed of singing on stage will enjoy reading about After Life. But beyond the story of the band itself, Ellen is also a very sweet story about not giving up on your dreams, or yourself, and– if I may be so bold as to offer an interpretation– a story about loving yourself, and allowing yourself to BE loved. Ellen is a woman who was on the verge of having everything she dreamed of, and lost it all. Then, after suffering horrendous loss, managed to stand up, dust herself off, and start from scratch. That kind of gumption is something to be admired, even in a fictional world.
But, here’s what I love most about this character: She’s human. Yes, she is braver and stronger than I could ever wish to be, but she is vulnerable. She is self- conscious. She is so relatable, it hurts. I love seeing characters in books with this kind of depth. Women in romance novels (like in movies and TV shows) tend to be picture perfect women, with gorgeous hair, flawless bodies, and perfect skin. Ellen is not that. She is not flawless. Beautiful, absolutely. But not an unrealistic, unachievable standard. She is HUMAN. The world needs more of that. We need to see imperfect women who are just as worthy of love.
If I had a criticism, apart from some mild editing errors, I would say that because there are so many scenes involving concerts, a couple of things got slightly repetitive. But truly, beyond that, I would be hard pressed to find fault here. I would have enjoyed a LITTLE more closure between Ellen and her mom, as well as with the Nana character, but I wasn’t left wanting.
Ellen is one of those books that just takes you away. It’s easy to get swept up in and forget the troubles of the day. It’s an easy, relaxing read. If I have any regrets here, it’s that there’s not a soundtrack to go with the book! The music is described so clearly that I was wishing I could listen to it! Personally, I’m picturing a more heavy metal version of Evanescense.
If you enjoy a bit of a love story, and rock music, Ellen is definitely one you will want to add to your list!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2018I will like to separate this review into parts.
Part one Gerne
Part two contents
Part one:
When I was contacted by the author I was pitched that this book is a romance first and also following Ellens story after the accident she had. So she got severely burnt lost an arm and her lungs got scorched. Pretty gruesome right?
Yes right, also after what 5 years she manages to get back on her feet and join the band afterlife. So far so good, so incidents happen with the band from the gecko and she explains what happens to them. Awesome! that's good as well so it's leading as in a nice way. Anyway, we dive into the world of the band pretty straight away.
That's it... The end
Jokes, not! here is my complaint if you gonna say it's a romance novel then give as more romance and less band. Here is the thing caring for someone and having like a meh sex that's not romance, that basic needs.
Also, no emotions flying towards them just purely friendship I saw it that way anyway. No swooning, no charming nothing spicy not even vanilla. Like the nana said being soulmates doesn't mean you have to be lovers. Dah Nana, you are a wise woman you saw not spark at all.
Although I have to say that on Goodreads has no gerne.
Part two:
Alright, for this part I have to say that was actually interesting following the band around. How everything worked, concerts, recording drama within the band. The working of a band life. It felt like a documentary. Which again I liked. I mean that would have been awesome if I went thinking this is a band book and surprise there is a hint of romance.
Anyway, Conclusion
I would have loved to see the romance be darker and with more smooshing faces and bodies together. Also the one interesting character Luke wasn't the one the fell in love, it's a same. I mean if he and Ellen been an item wow explosive stuff.
So I leave here with my thoughts and to tell you if you want to read band book then read it it's actually good. if you want to read a romance book with a little band stuff then don't read it.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2020In this story, the reader is able to get a close up look into the real lives of rock stars. We sometimes put these groups up on a pedestal thinking their lives are all glamor and shine. We as fans only see the show. But the fact is, they work hard. They work late hours and many hours to hone their craft. And the bottom line, they are regular people. Just like you and me.
Coral McCallum brings it in Ellen. A remarkable writer turned author, her words will inspire you. They will stay with you as you come to realize we all are flawed. We all have obstacles to overcome. We all face challenges in life but one thing is true—embedded deep in our psyche—we are created for love and we all deserve happiness. A must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars This band isn't just a book band....I want tickets to their next gig!
This is a spin off novel featuring the band After Life (AL) and their mysterious front woman Ellen, who first made an appearance in books 2 and 3 of the author's Silver Lake series. AL were an ‘interesting’ addition to a great story line in those novels but I never thought too deeply about them, having been so invested in the main characters of that series. So, when I learned that Ellen was to have her own book I was intrigued to know more about her journey, but you don’t just get Ellen’s story here, you get to see how the band comes together and works through adversity to launch their career in the music industry.
There's no necessity to have read the first three novels in the Silver Lake series to enjoy this book, although having read them first myself, I actually feel that this book would work really well being read first as many of the characters cross over and have been so cleverly introduced here that you are not left wondering where they’ve come from. The time line of the AL story is running in tandem with the Silver Lake books and ties together seamlessly, producing a very clever and beautifully integrated body of writing. So if you’re new to Coral McCallum’s books and this is the first book you’re considering reading, don’t hesitate…..grab it now, you won’t regret it.
I loved the attention to detail paid in the writing of the band’s story, particularly Ellen and her ‘Eye of Horus’ emblem which features on her eye patch. Do a bit of research into the meaning behind the ancient symbol and you’ll appreciate how ingeniously it unifies Ellen’s outer public persona with her personal inner strengths.
The guys in the band are great characters, each with their own endearing qualities. Yes, even Luke (the Bass player) after he starts off by being such a d*ckhead to Ellen, shows his true colours and you can’t help feeling for him. I’ll never be able to look at a Kit Kat again without thinking of Cal (Guitarist, Cookie Monster and all-round nice guy). Jack (on Drums) is a bit of a dark horse and I’m sure there’s a lot more to learn about his sometimes furtive behaviour. Which leaves us with Taylor (or Tailz on Lead Guitar), he’s such a caring, genuine character and his care of Ellen and his family is heart warming.
The support characters are just as entertaining and important to the storyline and they really enhance the readers enjoyment and commitment to the book.
I don’t know if this is just wishful thinking but I got the feeling that there’s more to come from After Life by means of another book down the line. I’m sure they will feature in the Silver Light series again but they are just too big and too important to be just a part of another band's story and there were threads in this book that haven’t been tied up yet....Nana’s prophesy that Ellen and Taylor are destined to be soul mates and not lovers, Ellen’s relationship with her mother is unresolved and then there’s the elusive Jack! What’s his story?
You keep writing Coral and I’ll keep devouring every word!

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspirational tale of one woman's battle against the stars of her past
Ellen is struggling to overcome physical and emotional wounds caused by a dreadful accident with her previous band, but she doesn't let that get in the way when she embarks upon a new project with a new band.
Ellen proves that despite her injuries, she still has a great deal to give to the world.
Coral is obviously a fan of the rock scene and this shines through as she paints a picture of various shows, song development and the recording of albums.
Ellen's band After Life face various adversities along the way, there's romance too.
All in all a tale of how with strength and determination, not to mention the support of those you love, anything is possible.
Great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant must read novel.
This is one of the best books I have read. Kept me going from the first page. Only started it Sunday night. Couldn't put it down. After reading Coral's other Silver Lake series you couldn't expect for anything else. From Lori and Jake, and now Ellen and Taylor. Where will the next book take us on the road with these two bands. Laughter and tears follow along as their stories unfold. Love the family tales and the backstage escapades of the band. Next year is too long to wait for the next book. Coral get writing. 😀

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fab book from Coral McCallum
After reading the Silver Lake series I was so looking forward to reading this book which follows Ellen (one of the minor characters that appears in the series). As I enjoyed the Silver Lake series so much I wanted to wait until I had some free time to enjoy this book from cover to cover without interruptions and finally got a chance to do so this week. It did not disappoint. Really well written, fabulous characters and an all round great read. I can’t wait for the next one from this amazing author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ellen Rocks!
Coral has done it again! Loved reading Ellen’s story and thoroughly enjoyed meeting new characters with old friends popping in for a visit every now and then. Looking forward to the next in the Silver Lake series already and hoping that Ellen is the start of an interlinked series. If you like strong women and good music do yourself a favour and read Ellen.
