But when his old flame Catherine Reed comes back to town, he wonders if they can find healing together.
Catherine believes that anyone who wants to learn should be allowed to learn, but she is quick to find a town divided on that issue. As she and Samuel set out to change people’s minds in a post-Civil War era, they find themselves drawn to each other over and over again. As they join together for the same cause, could they also find a second chance at happiness?

- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2024Full disclosure I know the author personally and consider her a friend. She did not ask me for this review.
This is a beautiful Christian historical romance. The characters created made some pivotal societal points and shared many poignant moments. I really enjoyed the full circle continuity in this book and all of the scenes that showed community and family closeness. The topics of grief, sin, and forgiveness are prominent. I'm looking forward.
to reading the second book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2022"This is a warm story reminiscent of Jeanette Oke’s "Love Comes Softly" and "When Love Calls the Heart." By Chapter 5, I didn't want to put the book down. It's a tender love story about two grieving souls who find solace in their shared childhood memories while starting a one-room school. But conflict arises from the school board and the townspeople. The descriptions are wonderful and the writing flows. Even though there are typos, I found them easy to overlook while caught up in the story. I enjoyed this sweet historical romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2022The is the story of a teacher and preacher who both need forgiveness as they struggle to overcome challenges from the community. The story is touching and was a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2022I enjoy reading Christian Historical Fiction and books by new Authors. Second Chance at Happiness by Greta Picklesimer fits into both of the catergories. I was excited to read this book based on the Synopsis.
Catherine Reed moves back to her hometown with her 4yr old daughter, Clair, after the tragic death of her husband. They will live with her Mother and Brother in the house she grew up in. Catherine is applying for the Teacher position at the One Room Schoolhouse. She has an encounter with Samuel Harris as soon as she and her daughter disembark the Train as they reach town. Samuel Harris lost his wife and unborn child a year earlier and he is also a grieving widow. Samuel is the Preacher for the Town and has been in a faith struggle since his wife's death. Catherine and Samuel had a relationship in the past and seeing Catherine gives Samuel hope that they can rekindle that and help each other through their grief. Both Catherine and Samuel have secrets that they are hiding and could be a hinder to the rekindling of a relationship. Catherine discovers that the towns people have a very different view on Education then Samuel and Catherine do. They embark on a journey to help the towns people understand Education values and philopshy in this post-Civil War era. Samuel and Catherine find themselves falling in love again as they spend more and more time together on their mission of Education. Will Catherine and Samuel be able to reveal their secrets to one another and their family? Will there be forgiveness for these "Sinful" secrets? Will Catherine and Samuel have a Second Chance Romance?
WOW, this story was a whirlwind book with a lot going on. I enjoyed this book from the very beginning and could not stop until I was finished. The Setting of being Post Cival War Era is a time in History that I LOVE and appreciate, so that setting intrigued me! Catherine and Samuel both had healing to do and secrets to reveal, but they seemed to be able to pick up where they left off. I appreciate that the author didn't rush them into a relationship, but allowed them to go slow and learn to trust one another. Truly a great book about "Second Chance Romance". I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who likes Christian Historical Fiction! FANTASTIC BOOK!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2022My favorite theme in a book is when flawed characters overcome their weaknesses. Both Catherine and Samuel had a past they wrestled with and eventually overcame. The post Civil War era history was well done and interesting. The romantic pace was slower, but that was just right for Catherine and Samuel. The author portrayed the complex problem of post-war racial tension with skill. Second Chance At Love is a good read worth your time.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2022As a fan of the second chance, I was looking forward to reading this one. The premise was intriguing, and as I read the characters really were likable, but the writing itself fell short. Without going to in-depth into the writing craft, I noticed several times in the beginning that while the author was avoiding putting the character's feelings into italics, it instead appeared to be switching the POV from 3rd to 1st person in the middle of paragraphs. Mistakes happen, but there were several that I caught that should have been fixed during the editing process--not typos, but things like turning a light on twice. The flow felt disjointed and unfocused. In the very beginning, Catherine is crying and unsure how to move forward with life without her husband, and the next she's gazing at the beauty that is Samuel and fondly remembering their past together. For the most part the story was about conflict with her teaching, but the romance would be sprinkled in randomly (with odd intensity) more like an added necessity than a naturally flowing part of the story. I think the guts are there for a good story, but it definitely needs some work.
