- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2022I received an advanced reading copy of this book for free and have not received any compensation for my review. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was fascinating to learn what motivates and drives a person to spend so much of their youth and life studying and training to gain knowledge about each inch of the body and how to care for another physically, mentally, and spiritually. The forming of an MD and a true healer takes such focus! It is amazing that he managed, despite all, to maintain connection with his wife and three children especially throughout those early years of such tremendous demands on his time. I particularly enjoyed how he revealed his personality … the good, the ridiculous, his deficits, and his humor. Some may find his dark humor expressed in the book to be sacrilegious or disrespectful. In one perspective it was. But humor is a way medical staff deal with the sadness and seriousness of life and death and so many challenges in between. He does express some dark humor but the build up to the event conditioned me to enjoy immensely his perspective on the situation. The situations he got himself into with various problems were hysterical. He presented himself as not always making the most mature decisions in his youth and letting frustration with a situation get the best of him. On the other side of that coin, he revealed his enormous empathy and respect for others and his emotional intensity. I feel I got to know the man … as a real person, as an authentic person. The orthopedic detail was a bit much but through it one could see his passion extraordinaire for his chosen specialty.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2022If you are one of the 100,000 patients Dr Tom has seen, or a friend, or even a relative you need to read “Bones and Me,” If you want to know how he arrived at the point where you met him, or heard of him..... this well written story will let you. About 30 years ago I became a patient. When he saw me in his office he asked me why I was there. My rather flippant answer was because you have “SHOULDER” on your car's license plate. I must at this point disclaim that Tom's dad and my stepdad are brothers. We did not know each other growing up because he grew up in the DC area, as a Redskin fan, and I was in Baltimore, as a Colt fan. Different locations, different cultures. Because of the family connection, though, I sought Tom's advice regarding my ailing shoulder. After reading this book I realized that because of his training and medical history my coming to him was the right choice, regardless of any family connection. Knowing how he arrived at who he is now brought me along for the ride, while also making me look back at my own life, and appreciate how I became me in 2022, from where I started 80 years ago.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2022Really enjoyed this book. You never really know the background stories of the doctors you see. This man’s journey to becoming a doctor shows the struggles, long hours, and hard work that goes into becoming one of the best. But it is not a dry rendition of his life. It is filled with hysterical stories and learning experiences. It shows the careful balance between work life and family life. It also shows the joy of doing something you love while caring for people in a way that goes beyond medicine and science. You can see how this doctor loved the science of his work and using his hand and his problem-solving skills but more importantly you can see how his desire to help and heal others was the most rewarding thing of his lifelong profession. Something that is truly missing in today’s treatment of illness…the ability to listen and have love for the patient. What a great example for future doctors!! Highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2022An ebullient memoir of an orthopedic surgeon as well as a firsthand look into the healthcare system of the past.
'Bones & Me' by Thomas Neviaser shows a life full of broken bones, hard work, and constant learning.
'I really enjoyed the extremities and spinal column.' This phrase never better illustrates the character of the author and his book. Deeply in love with his profession, the author wanted to share his passion with others by describing his long, forty-year journey as an orthopedic surgeon. The book contains revealing cases, some of which can make the reader chuckle, and mistakes that will make the reader frown (nowadays, the author would have been sued for malpractice). In a few instances, the author excuses his own actions; still talking about them many years later (including them in a book) indicates the author's courage and self-awareness.
Another book by Thomas Neviaser, 'The Way I See It: A Head-to-Toe Guide to Common Orthopedic Conditions,' talks exclusively about, well, orthopedy. Thus, the memoir only mentions yet not describes in depth various common traumas. First and foremost, the book introduces readers to the author, as if we all met over a cup of coffee in a cafe; the medical cases he dealt with serve as a blurred background.
'Bones & Me' will be a perfect gift for the author's family and colleagues. It can also start a series of 'Know Your Doctor' memoirs that can replace magazines in the doctors' waiting rooms. In the end, wouldn't patients trust their physician more if they knew his story?
I received an advance review copy from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
