George Washington, the first president of the United States, is much more than a monument on Mount Rushmore. Who was Washington, the general, president, and husband? He was first and foremost a man of impeccable honor which, despite military adversity and political wrangling, never abandoned him. The Founding Fathers who squabbled and competed amongst themselves did agree on one thing: only Washington could lead the country, first in the country’s military fight for freedom and then as the man charged with transforming thirteen individual states into a united country. But in his youth, George Washington did not intend to become the Father of his Country. As a younger son of a middling class Virginian, he intended to earn his living as a surveyor, and in that role, he was introduced to the vast potential of the country that would one day be a nation. But when the death of his older brother made him the heir to Mount Vernon, Washington ascended to leadership in the military, political and social spheres of Virginia and the United States.

Inside you will read about...

✓ The Washington's of Virginia
✓ Europe Exports its Wars to the Colonies
✓ Washington at Mount Vernon
✓ An Englishman no Longer
✓ Washington at War
✓ The Father of His Country
✓ Return to Mount Vernon

As a member and later officer in the Virginia militia, he fought with the British army against the French as the two European powers struggled for control of the rich Ohio Valley. The British, who would refuse Washington a commission in their army, would later meet him in battle as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, fighting for independence against the forces of King George III. As a political leader, he would become the architect of the American government. As the master of Mount Vernon, Washington’s marriage to the wealthy Martha Dandridge Custis placed him among the elite of the Virginia aristocracy. His integrity established a model for subsequent generations to emulate. That few have managed to match his achievements is an indication of his influence and character. Meet George Washington, the man, and discover the identity of this remarkable leader.

    What a great find this series is! I was contacted about this book/Hourly History by the Director of the series, and asked if I'd be interested in doing a review. I'm a long-time fan of American History (thanks to my dad) and of biographies, and the idea of condensing a life like Washington's into a one-hour read was curiously compelling. I didn't quite know what to expect - I rather thought I knew a fair amount about our first President; turns out I was wrong, and an hour's worth of reading provided me with rather more new information than I imagined it would!

    With a larger emphasis on early life than I had previously experienced (relatively, that is, given the length of the book), I found myself lost in this one quickly. I suspect I read it in rather less than an hour; it certainly felt shorter. In a clear, concise voice, the book presents the life and accomplishments (which were many and varied) of Washington in a way that is informative, interesting and engaging.

    This is a marvelous idea for a series, and I'm pleased to report that there are a slew of titles on a very broad range of topics encompassing global history. I suspect will be a great way to develop a working knowledge base about a lot of subjects that have always interested me but that I've feared were too large or involved to do justice to without a major time commitment, like the actual, non-Starz, experience of the Vikings, the Renaissance, or the Middle Ages. There are also biographies of the famous and infamous and histories of world wars. It's a brilliant collection that seems to be ever-expanding, and I'm delighted to have been introduced to it!

    I'm a homeschool mother and a history lover. With that in mind I can say that I enjoyed this short book for a couple of reasons. First, it doesn't bog you down with minute details that most simply won't remember and simply don't care. Let's face it, most won't read a history book just for the fun of it. But you can this one. It's short but gives the necessary highlights of Washington's life for the average student without boring their socks off. I actually liked it. Read it in two nights. There wasn't a lot I didn't already know, but this is a great resource for homeschool families. And should be easy enough for the average 4th to 12th grader to read in no time. In fact, I'm wanting my youngest to try to CLEP out of history in college so I think I'll have her read several these Hourly History books. I notice many are free; others are only $2.99. When you have several kids you're homeschooling any free book is a great value if it's actually decent subject matter. Give it a try. You have nothing to lose but a few hours of reading. You will learn something you didn't already know.

    I have deliberated on what to score this book for a couple of days.

    What I didn't like:

    * no author
    * no citations - there are quotes, but no idea where they are from.
    * more of an encyclopedia post
    * the French and Indian War information is distorted to be excessively pro Washington.
    * too much with the "had done" instead of past tense verb itself (passive voice)

    What I liked:
    * fun to read
    * short and an overview of subject
    * interesting and informative
    * the author is obviously interested in the subject matter
    * a great introduction to Washington, although I would not suggest as a source for academia, but would recommend for someone who might be interested in Washington, etc.

    This book was supplied to me free of charge for an unbiased review.

    This book is part of a large series that attempts to provide the key items of information on historical events and figures in books that can be read in one hour. When dealing with Washington, that is a tall order. The difficulties he faced and the sometimes unorthodox means he used to overcome them have inspired multi-volume series dealing with just the battles of the Revolutionary War alone, for instance, to say nothing of his years as the first President.

    One gets the impression that he was far more intelligent that many historians have given him credit for, and far more of a homebody who just wanted to grow tobacco and hunt foxes than the biographers who want to make him a secular saint want to alllow.

    This last point is the one on which the book is most successful -- we Washington as a real human being who never wanted fame or power, but accepted the burdens of both out of a sense of duty,

    Highly recommended. And yes, it CAN be read in just under an hour.

    A brief but thorough history. I appreciated that the writer addressed the false myths about Washington and their origin.
    The emphasis on Washington's character, his willingness to sacrifice self-interest to a greater purpose, and his ability to motivate others to do the same, was much appreciated and a highlight of the book.
    In reading it, one can't help but marvel at the life and experiences of a man so aptly suited to do what he did. It makes crystal clear the way in which character, circumstances and experiences came together at just the right time to produce just the man needed for a tremendous undertaking.
    I was reminded of Washington's own words in a letter he wrote to Samuel Langdon, in 1789, “The Man must be bad indeed who can look upon the events of the American Revolution without feeling the warmest gratitude towards the great Author of the Universe whose divine interposition was so frequently manifested in our behalf."
    I will be looking for other titles by this author. This is a book I will read to my grandchildren.

    When I was asked to review this short biography of George Washington I have to admit not knowing a lot about the USA’s first President. As an Australian I suppose my history was centred around my own country and England.

    This short history gave me enough information to get a grasp of his life and times and I spent some time online during my read to extrapolate some of the information it contained that I wanted to und Rostand further.

    All in all a good read and I am happy to recommend it as a means to understanding US history be it a potted one. Could be all that’s needed. It was for me.

    Reviewed in Germany on July 30, 2019
    This is the 4th book by this “author”.

    I decided to read the book, because as a non-American (my nationality is German), we don’t learn much of the American history beside the beginning.
    It was an interesting read, the sentences are not to long and easy to understand, but I myself enjoy biographies that contain more about the person than something else.
    Of course, I understand, that the French and Indian War is part of Washingtons life, and it’s important, but I felt like nearly half of the book was about it.
    One thing I haven’t liked about the book is the fact that there sometimes hasn’t been a clear line where the “author” wants us to go. Especially the timeline had been messed up here and there which is a no-no for me personally. There are a few quotes made by or of Washington, but not very much. You learn a lot about the character of Washington, like he wasn’t very well educated (his father and brother had gone to school in England) and that he looked after his loved ones. Also, Washington owned slaves, who were given freedom after his death. Haven’t known that! Impressive, if you recall the standards of this time.

    This book is perfect for everyone who wants a quick overview of the 1st president of the United States’ life and upbringing.
