Betty Adams lives in a particularly damp and remote corner of the Pacific Northwest and like a hobbit enjoys visitors so long as she knows them in advance and knows when they are coming. She was born sometime last century and will likely die sometime this century. She works winters on a small organic research farm when not writing and spends most of her time herding eccentric genius scientists (she is absolutely certain cats would be easier) with the help of her Great Pyrenees mix. Summers she spends nomadically wandering the Pacific Northwest in search of material for her stories and a regular paycheck for a biology major (she is reasonably certain those are on the Endangered Species List). She has several works published in the National Park Internal Database which may or may not be classified documents.

Betty Adams has written a charming, child friendly, and quite humorous universe one short story at a time. Each entry helps the reader to become more familiar with each of her curious and unique alien species, and each entry introduces some quirk about human behavior, culture, or biology that could come off as being quite bizarre to our extraterrestrial companions.

Humans are Weird, as the name might imply, seeks to explore the differences that might crop up between truly foreign intelligent life both on a biological as well as cultural level; however, where most science fiction investigates these themes from the humans' and thus our perspective these stories seek to take a more introspective analysis. None of these stories are told from a human perspective prompting the reader to wonder just why we behave the way we do. These stories never came off as critical beyond the point of humor but they encourage curiosity in the reader and could easily inspire further research into the rational of our own behaviors.

I have already bought several copies of this book to gift to several of my friends who have each come back with naught but praise for the stories contained therein. Among these are a poorly read Naval Officer and a Shut-in book nerd so I have reasonable certainty that these stories have broad appeal.

These stories very safe for children and could easily make for excellent early reading material.

Personally bought the book as something to read while biking-- and ended up finding myself reading during hours outside of my designated exercise period. I found myself having a hard time putting it down, as I was fascinated to read the observations of humans through the lens of different alien races. Speaking of which, can I just say 10/10 would snuggles the Undulants. Which... I suppose that's what they want anyway, so no problems there.

I found myself really wanting to see more of the different races, and honestly? I think it would be nice to see a companion story to this one that focuses on maybe one group as they're on a mission, allowing the individuals within their race to shine a bit more. It would be fascinating to see members of the other races have their own perception of oddity from within their own cultures, same as we've seen with humans like Steve [I believe?] who had that strange inclination to constantly eat foods he was allergic to.

But this is me rambling. Overall I just really enjoyed the different species, and wanted to hang with them more. I was sadden when I finished the last page, because that meant my time with them was over.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I was grateful to have found it and bought it.

My wife devoured this series and enjoyed it immensely. Based on her experience, I decided to give it a whirl.
I did not find it as pleasant as my wife did. There was no discernible plot or story line, but delivered a series of vignettes that had little or no cohesion bonding them together.
For me, it was almost entirely episodic with various species of creatures struggling to catalog human proclivities, mannerisms and psychology.
There was no specific protagonist with whom I could identify, locations were not defined or detailed, no explanation of how humans and other life forms got together... or why, no antagonist to lend suspense, just a cluster of vignettes that didn't seem to go anywhere.
The saving grace was how the aliens tried to fathom the foibles and illogic of human behavior.
That was entertaining, but not particularly hilarious.

This collection of short vignettes describing humans as they travel the stars and explore distant planets etc. from the viewpoint of the other aliens in the same ship/place is hilarious. It also gives you the reader a nice way to think about your own humanity, your foibles and tics and how bizarre they must appear to a dispassionate outside observer such as an alien.

You can read this a little at a time, but it should be noted that it is very tempting to "read just one more" enough times that before you know it you discover you've read another quarter of the book. Fortunately there are sequels

This is a unique take on world building that manages to build a very rich universe with well fleshed out characters. Betty's style is so casual yet so detailed that each vignette offers far more information than realized on the first or even second read through.

The only drawback is I could have happily read another 100 pages or so! Worth every penny and I hope to read more about the scientists as they attempt to puzzle their way though human behaviors!

Perfect story to lighten your mood. No angst, simply funny lighthearted stories! I highly recommend. I am a sci fi fan, and this is an interesting departure from my usual space opera or romance reading. Well written and engaging!

The author is humorous. She has also made a huge leap from writing on Reddit to self-publishing. Kudos!

Regrettably, she tried to perform the narration herself. She stumbles through, repeats herself, enunciates poorly, pauses at weird times, and her breathing is so pronounced throughout that it is distracting. The latter might be corrected with better mic placement and using a pop filter.

Her content is good, but the audio delivery is horrible.

I read this and "We Took a Vote" out of order. I don't think it matters much. I really like the idea of short interactions based on themes rather than an over-arching narrative. You can pick up anywhere and start reading. It works for me. I thoroughly enjoyed both books and plan on reading through them many times.

The short stories in this book are a great way to reflect on the peculiar things humans do without thinking anything about it that might seem strange and dangerous to many species.
Interesting and funny I recommend this book to everyone who plans on visiting different ecosystems, especially when travelling outside of our solar system.

Great stories, with them being short enough to read several sharp insights into humanity and their alien coworkers.

I fully recommend this book and the rest of the series.

Reviewed in Canada on July 5, 2021
For those unfamiliar with Humans are Weird, it is a highly entertaining series set in a universe where humanity has long since made First Contact with extraterrestrial life. It turns out that humans are about as odd and eccentric as it gets by literally everyone else's standards, and our interplanetary neighbours and co-workers are constantly confused, baffled, and surprised by the commonplace foibles that strike even the very best of us.
