I am loving this book so far! The setting is classic. I am a lover of fantasy films, but it's been a while since I've chosen to read the genre. I can easily visualize the story the author has created like a fantastic movie I've bought tickets for at the theater. I wish I had more time on my hands to read through this novel without interruption. I can't wait to finish it!!!

This was a beautifully well written fantasy that pulled me right. I loved the magical ride through this fantasy world with the characters and their story. Very fresh after reading so many other fantasies that just seem to follow the same trope. Well done.

I’m a sucker for stories that explore the sudden shift into a magical reality, and Essence of the Wild does just that. The reader is carried intimately through the tale, learning all about Athoria along with Sarah. I love the joy you can feel through the telling of the story, even when things get a bit dicey. The character interactions and dialogue are very natural, and the various magical and fantastical creatures and situations throughout are all so creative. There are several interesting threads set up, and I look forward to discovering how they play out in future installments. I highly recommend this and will be checking out all of Mr. Whitburn’s works.

Brodie Whitburn's "Essence of the Wild" is an absolute gem. The writing in this book is simply exquisite. Whitburn's prose flows effortlessly, painting vivid pictures of the fantastical world and making it easy to get lost in its depths. The pacing is perfect, keeping me engaged and eager to uncover the secrets that lie within 'Athoria'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well crafted epic
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 25, 2020
I will try to keep this review spoiler free.

The plot follows several interconnected tales existing inside the fictional world of Athoria, which is both the creation of Whitburn and his author character at the very start of the book.
The author's daughter (character) finds herself transported to Athoria, inhabiting the mind and body of one of her father's characters, Siarathen.

The book is written in an omniscient style, which often shifts between past and present tense which gives the impression that unfolding events have both been written and are still being writ, and that the author is not entirely responsible for what is taking place. That somehow the world of Athoria has taken on a life of its own.

There is so much to discover, with well crafted characters and detailed history and landscape, which evolves at a good pace, secrets and information divulged at appropriate intervals. Some descriptions I thought were stunning, the city of coin was a particular favourite and Whitburn describes them all in such a way as to make them vivid in your mind's eye, which is no small task.

There are some surprises in store and some truly shocking moments that I did not see coming. The world of Athoria certainly keeps you on your toes. The action and fighting scenes contrast well with the fantasy elements, adding moments of gruesome brutality (Not everything in this world is fairy and elves)

You can see Whitburn's love of fantasy in homages to Tolkien and the influences of writers such as George R R Martin and J K Rowling, which makes for a very interesting, thoughtful, fantastical and emotional read.

There are many aspects of the story left to be answered (which is to be expected of the first installment of a series of books) it just gives the reader incentive to continue discovering Athoria and something tells me we don't even know the half of it yet.

I will definitely be reading more of this beautifully written world. Things are getting darker and I want to know how (or if) it will be resolved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Introduction to the World of Athoria
Reviewed in Australia on August 4, 2021
Wonderful, well written fantasy book where we are introduced to sisters, Sarah and Dany, who both love listening to stories written by their author father Martin. As Martin is working on his book 'Athoria', a trip to the shops ends in tragedy. In her grief Sarah awakens lost with no memory within her fathers magical 'World of Athoria', we follow her journey of discovering secrets of the new world she find herself in.

This book instantly drew me in, its quick paced, beautifully written and easy to follow along as you delve deeper in the fantasy world of 'Athoria'. A very refreshing read and doesn't follow the same trope that many other fantasy books do, with a unexpected twist or surprise with each turn of a page.

A fantastic introduction and first instalment to 'The World of Athoria', it has an intriguing storyline, with such well developed characters, that you feel yourself being pulled right into the story, navigating your way around the magical world with the main characters and different beings you encounter on the way through this mystical place.

A very enjoyable and captivating read, I read through it pretty quickly, I could not put it down! It is a great starting point to what I believe will be a legendary fantasy series. I eagerly look forward to the next instalment of Athoria 'Scriptures of Storm, Earth and Sea'.
