Schism (Crusader Chronicles Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 959 ratings

A new Papal Legate has come to Livonia but he is no friend of Conrad Wolff or the Sword Brothers. Grave charges are levelled against the commander of the Army of the Wolf, leading to a series of events that threatens to rip apart the crusader state in the Baltic.

For Conrad these are strange times as former enemies become allies and erstwhile allies seek to take advantage of Livonia’s weaknesses to further their own ends. This, the penultimate volume in the Crusader Chronicles series, sees Conrad fighting for his life and the Sword Brothers battling for their very existence against a backdrop of intrigue, international politics and betrayal.

The plot continues with battles and changes in friends and enemies. This volume was often plagued with distracting typos. Conrad has vanquished some of his enemies but there are still more!

The story is gripping, the character enduring . The Sword Brothers are still capable of fighting wars. The journey is emotional and keeps the audience involved. There were a few places of name confusion that editors missed. But still Darman's ability to weave a narrative is excellent.

5th of what will be a 6 book series. all books are totally enjoyable and character development is excellent. History, action, religious/political intrigue are all elements of the series. Reading the series has the effect of bonding with the continuing character-Conrad; much as with Pacorus in the Parthian series by Mr. Darman.

I think I am losing just a little interest in the Sword Brothers. This is the fifth book in the series and the premise of their general subjugation of the non-Catholic populations in the Baltic States is wearing thin for me. Conrad in particular remains of more interest, as do a number of his friends and enemies in the large cast involved. Darman does know how to develop these characters.
Plenty of action, politics and intrigue going on, but this book definitely lacks suspense in pretty much all the large battle scenes. Winners of the conflicts are very predictable,
More typos than normal in a Darman novel. There is even one piece where Stark, the new Oesellian king, suddenly continues the scene being named as his deceased brother. Very confusing.
The book was enjoyable but I will now, not be sorry to see the conclusion of this saga. I will certainly be reading it. We've done Partia & the Baltic now; I wonder where Darman will take us next.

Great series and depth. The setting took place in an area of the world where very little history is written about and especially during this great
historic and formative time. Love the depth of the characters. I would love to see more series from this author.

Following the trend of the previous books in the series the story just gets better and better. The author creates very 3D characters that you can't help but feel for. This book see's conflict with christian as well as pagan armies and you see the extent Conrads fellow sword brothers and friends will go to protect him. Yet another chapter in a fantastic story. If you like historically fiction then I highly recommend this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read with plenty of twists
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2016
Another great read with plenty of twists once again the author has killed off central characters keeping the reader guessing as to what may be coming next. Also shows the corruption of business, title and position. Also the Catholic Church is shown for what it was in those early days. I for one can not wait for the next book about the Sword Brothers
