The Ice March Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 243 ratings

Set against the backdrop of World War I and the Russian Revolution, ‘The Ice March’ is the story of Mikhail Petrov, an impoverished peasant who is drafted into the Russian Imperial Army in 1914. He is soon caught up in tumultuous events as the Imperial Army suffers defeats, retreats and huge losses on the Eastern Front.
But Mikhail’s star rises as Russia’s falls and soon his fate is entwined with that of a young, beautiful princess. In the drama of the Russian Revolution both flee Moscow to seek sanctuary in the Cossack lands to the south. There Mikhail joins the Whites and their tiny Volunteer Army. But the Bolsheviks are determined to wipe out the ‘counter-revolutionaries’ and thousands of Red Guards are soon marching against them. The scene is set for a campaign that will determine whether Mikhail and the Whites will survive or perish on the icy steppe of the Kuban.

I have one big problem with this book...the plot moves too fast. Covering a three year, world war and the beginning of a civil war in one book i too fast. This could have been made in to a series where each book described one year. I'd also like to see a bit more detailed battle scenes... a bit more blood and guts.

Otherwise i quite enjoyed this book. We have the main character, his likable friends and the love interest. A big plus is that the author obviously did his research and the book is all the better for it. Another great thing is that mr. Darman has chosen world war one and the eastern front, a subject that usually don't show up in historical fiction that much and which makes this a really interesting book to follow.
Since the plot seems to indicate a sequel, i'm quite eagerly waiting for such a book.

Russian history background, which I knew nothing about.
Good reading about it, wouldn't like to have been there.

I do like Darian's style; his books always have an epic feel to them & this was no exception.
Lots of decent character development & extremely well related scenes of conflict & suffering. I liked all the characters, both good & bad. It is set in a time in history with quite limited exposure in historical novels so I found the story very engaging; I also felt I learned something.
I hope there will be a sequel.

Fantastic change of pace for Peter Darman, one of my favourite authors of historic fiction. Will we ever find out what happens to Mikhail Petrov?

Enjoyed it very much as it gave an insite into Russia's participation in WW1.The revolution and the struggle of the White Army. A fast paced book with plenty of action and the difference between the aristocracy and the peasant of that era

An excellent read, that well exceeded my expectations. Follows the central character from his peasant roots through the Russian years of the First World War and the Bolshevik Revolutionary period. Very strong, one gets the sense, on detailed historical research, and staying true to that. And very strong on realistic portrayal of warfare, both physical and psychological. Not in any gung ho way, but permeated with a sense of the waste of human life. The initial village scenes are perhaps a bit simplistic. But this rapidly comes to seem appropriate, as the central character experiences the outside world and his personality expands. Recommended both for story and depiction of history. There is, in its realism, a lot of detail of battle - but written in a way that holds the attention. Five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars WW1 on the Eastern Front
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 4, 2019
Well written, fast paced and an almost unique setting for a novel - what more could you want! The characters are crying out for further development in a sequel. However, if it is going to be a standalone it's well worth a read as the story doesn't turn into a lecture about WW1, the revolutions and the early part of the Russian Civil War. Give it a go certainly as an ebook
