4.7 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

Mercy Dove is a woman haunted by her past and plagued by scandal. The affairs of Evesham Hall, Mercy's infamous ancestral home, fill the broadsheets. But only society's elite, the select few invited by her stepfather, truly know the depravity of the decaying manor.

Tired and eager for change, Mercy invites a new acquaintance to Evesham Hall, young Miss Violette. Her arrival provokes a shift within the walls, altering the status quo, and a much darker, more sinister shadow falls over the manor.

With childhood memories resurfacing and the ghosts of the past looming, Mercy must find the courage to confront her inner demons and conquer the darkness surrounding her. Can Mercy Dove emerge unscathed in her final act?

The scene is set, ready for a spine-tingling story to unfold, a Victorian gothic horror.

Take a seat, the curtain is about to rise. Let us begin at the end.

Becky Wright is the gothic horror go to author without a doubt.
The Final Act of Mercy Dove is told in a style that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and the desolation of the mind. Becky Wright is the gothic horror go to author without a doubt. The story unfolds as a play with acts instead of chapters. Opening night! I’m all comfy in bed with the bedside lamp on low, a carafe and a full glass of wine at the bedside. The doors are locked and checked twice. The curtain is rising. “The crow watched from the window ledge. The end was coming.” And still, I read, unable to close the book. I’m not a horror reader; but this book grabbed me and I couldn’t seem to put it down or get it out of my head long after I closed the book. I knew something bad was going to happen; my brain was in overdrive waiting for the axe to fall or the murder of crows to crow. Either way, it made me all shivery. I was caught completely unawares in this psychological web of what is real and what is not... Wright created a living hell of horror that I could feel long after I closed the book. I can’t say that I loved The Final Act of Mercy Dove; but I couldn’t put it down either. It is a disturbing and beautifully written story that begs to be read and reread again and again.

"What's done is done and can't be undone." It is really hard to start this review. First of all - READ THIS BOOK. It's fantastic. But don't read it unless you like gothic horror tales wrapped in beautiful words that you will re-read again and again. This novella deserves to be digested in its own rhythms. I'm a fan of this author's work, but truly think this gem is my favorite. Like fine bitter chocolate, it sneaks up on you with lyrical imagery that breaks your heart before plunging a knife into it. This is an erotic tale that keeps you on the edge of discomfort. Some encounters sweet with discovery and others not so much as corruption soaks into nearly every facet of their lives, unwrapped within each Act as a rose with rotten petals until the final mystery is exposed with truth. As Mercy's mother said, "There is no creature so blinkered by truth than one driven by lust..."
Lady Mercy Dove is young, beautiful and wealthy. We learn early on that she navigates night terrors and an unrecognized form of madness we realize only by navigating her POV, as the world sees only what she wants it to. Her lady's maid, Birdie, is loyal. Their friendship felt like a desperate shadow one sees from the corner of the eye. The twist at the end truly caught me off guard and I'm still, two days later, still unnerved by it. My only complaint is that I wish this was a full length novel. I highly recommend this book and am giving it a well earned five stars.

‘The Final Act of Mercy Dove’ is a complex story, full of brooding darkness, fleeting glimpses, and layers of illusion, perception and truth that both inform and obscure the reader’s perceptions as the story progresses.

At times it is darkly sensual, at other times it is macabre and suspenseful.

This is a good read, although not one recommended for the squeamish.

Wow. I finished this in two sittings with “life” getting in the way. I didn’t want to put it down. This is the second book I’ve enjoyed by Wright, the first being Priory. I must say this one pushed all of the enticing, dark erotic buttons I may have as a reader. The writing is beautiful with its Gothic undertones. Wright definitely understands this genre and its poetic prose.

I had an inkling at times as to what was really happening with the character Birdie, but I was kept guessing until the final pages. I nearly wept for Mercy. Her final act was possibly expected but I held onto hope. Such a beautiful and broken character–how could I not feel empathy?

Any book that can give me a physical and emotional response deserves 5 stars. I can’t wait to read more of her books.

The Final Act of Mercy Dove, by Becky Wright, is a taut Gothic tale of lust, decadence, sexual abuse, emotional abandonment and horror. It is told in a high pitched Victorian and elegant literary style and it is a sumptuous, titillating, terrifying and tragic story. A dark fairy tale for adults, it starts with an innocent young girl. We the readers stand by helplessly and watch her suffering and painful descent into the abyss. The plot keeps you in suspense and you will not understand the whole of the story until you reach its frightening and unnerving ending. The ending makes the tale a total success for it all comes together as a chilling work of art. Like a disturbing dream, scenes will come back to haunt you. If you love beautiful writing, Gothic horror and adult themes, you will be mesmerized by this gem.

I read this in one go and it really lived up to my expectations. Becky Wright has created some beautiful magic here, even with the dark subject matter. Her writing is lovely and lyrical which pairs surprisingly well with this gothic horror of a story. There’s a strong erotic element, as well. I loved the ending and highly recommend this one!

A sinister and soulful take of lust and betrayal, with cover to cover sex, violence, and bitterness, dressed in the black of night and mankind's worst nature.
  • Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2022
This is a story that is layered deep. Victorian, with almost a soft erotica feel to it. Mercy Dove drips sexuality, but in her family, blood tends to be dripping nearby.
On the surface, this is a story about dealing with what life hands you and using it to your advantage. Underneath you are looking at what it is like to be controlled, and how it can wear you down.
I can’t say too much because of spoilers for such a short story.

This short story isn’t for the faint of heart. There’s violence, murder, s3x & abuse. Being a short story it’s not overly graphic but does contain some descriptions. The book is also classed as errotic gothic horror (the first I didn’t know when I brought it 😂)

The best way I can describe the final act of Mery Dove is this thus.. the story is the stage & the characters are players but this stage is a chess board. The moves are Mercy Doves moulding & the final curtain is a bubbling pot about to over boil. Mercy & Birdie are a creation of abuse. Now this short story does very much focus on the darker sides of humanity - this reminded me of Laura Purcell but think darker. Also.. parts of this story reminded me of Hester Fox’s book ‘The widow of pale Harbour’ I mean both of these as a complement.

The prose has a deep sense of mystery which continues throughout. The writing style & how the story plays out really gripped me. I think the pacing was great & everything revealed at the right time. I had some suspicions about the characters but I was surprised how events played out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully magnificent!

This book is my first gothic horror by Becky Wright. Expecting scenes of intense gore that would keep me awake at night, I was surprised to find this gem of a novella delved more into the dark complexities and mysteries of the human soul. The Final Act of Mercy Dove has an elegant and lyrical Victorian Gothic style of writing which was also a first for me. I thoroughly enjoyed every erotic line, word and imagery as they danced in a luscious rich harmony, weaving through the pages amidst the dark tale in this book. Despite Mercy's shockingly twisted deeds, I understood her pain, her mental anguish from abuse, and her need for revenge—had I been in her shoes, I may have done the same. This dark and sensual plot held me captive and in suspense until the end. We all have a dark side, dark thoughts, but what happens when we let those voices in, answer those calls? Read this much-deserved five-star book to find out. Becky's writing is beautifully magnificent!

5.0 out of 5 stars A rich and satisfying Victorian Gothic read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 18, 2020
As a fan of Becky Wright’s books, I was keen to read her latest novella and it certainly did not disappoint. Her style of writing is sumptuous and slow-paced and is a deliciously languid exploration of the darker side of the human soul. Written in the Victorian Gothic literary style, it works well in the shorter form of a novella. For like the finest dark chocolate, the richest ruby wine, and the most mature cheese – it is to be savoured, not gulped - and a little goes a very long way.

Mercy Dove is a complex and multi-faceted character, and I found myself both loving and despising her in equal measures. The deeds she performs are shocking and heinous, yes. But there is always a motive behind her madness, and we the reader can understand even when we shudder with horror. This is a story that begs the question - which of us raised under these conditions would not have turned out just like Mercy.

There is blood in this book, and death, and madness, but this is no slasher flick, no B-movie gorefest to be cringed away from and then instantly forgotten. No, this is a dip into the human psyche, to the depths that the human soul can descend to and still come back.

Beautifully written, every word drips with meaning and is a true feast for the mind. All too often, modern books pander to the short attention span our world has created with texting and social media the preferred methods of communication. This book is more like a long letter from an interesting acquaintance. It takes its time, the prose is rich and fulfilling, and the characters deep and three dimensional.

I am not a fan of the horror genre, but this book cannot be fairly placed in this category because it is so much more than that. There are no monsters within its pages save those we create ourselves and maybe that is the core strength of this book. We all possess the demonic and the twisted within us, and this book explores what happens when we choose to release those demons.

An easy five stars and a perfect autumnal fireside read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this gothic novella and the atmosphere it weaved as we followed the admittedly tragic life and times of Lady Mercy Dove. I found Mercy to be a strong, compelling and complex character and even more so with a twist I didn't see coming. If you're in the mood for a quick and interesting read exploring the ties that bind us and what destruction they can cause, then look no further than The Final Act of Mercy Dove.
