About the author

Hi, I’m Vicky Peplow!
I’m a proud North-Easterner with a big heart for my roots and a passion for storytelling. Born and raised in a charming old coal mining village in the North-east of England, my hometown has always been the soul of my writing. The warmth, grit, and character of the place are woven into every page of my books.
Life took me across the pond to Toms Brook, Virginia, USA, where I found my soulmate and, unexpectedly, my love for writing. What started as a creative spark quickly turned into a journey I never imagined. In just four years, I’ve been lucky enough to share my stories with readers around the world, and I’m deeply grateful for the connections I’ve made along the way.
When I’m not writing, you’ll find me indulging in a few of my other loves—graphic design, diving into a good book, or cheering on my favorite sports teams. My creative side has come in handy designing covers for my books, giving each one a personal touch that mirrors the stories inside.
I’m also an animal lover through and through. Our dachshund puppy, Dasher, who’s full of personality, and our cat, Leo, who rules the roost in his quiet, regal way, brightened my days.
My stories are a blend of heartfelt moments, relatable characters, and a dash of inspiration from the life I’ve lived and the places I’ve loved. If you’re looking for a story that feels like home, I’d be honored for you to give my books a try.
Thanks for taking a moment to get to know me—let’s stay connected!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2024This is my first time reading a book by this author, so I really didn’t know what
to expect. This was certainly a page turner and I felt like I was constantly guessing on how the book was going to end. It did not turn out how I expected at all, but I would surely keep reading the rest of the books in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2023This was a gripping page turner!! Hard to put it down. I cant wait to read more in the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2024The author weaves a compelling narrative. Harlan is a tragic yet intricately depicted character. The author should consider expanding this story into a full-length novel to allow readers get more emotionally attached to the protagonist.
One minor suggestion, if I may: While other readers may not be bothered, I would find the reading experience improved if the author could reduce the frequent use of the word "but" (8 “but” on page 9 alone).
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2023This story had me glued to my Kindle from beginning to end. During the two interviews with convicted killer, Mason Hubbard by investigative reporter, Harlan Fairbanks, I had no idea what would happen next. That’s why I had to keep reading. Confessions of a Killer: Book One is an excellent start for a series. I would definitely keep reading the series! Highest recommendation.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2023What I like about this book is the slightly open-ended nature of the characters. The brutal killer actually has a personality and you can see why he might have done it. The main character is haunted by his past and drinks a bit but interviews the killer in an attempt to save his job. Interesting and well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2022Harlan is about to discover that nothing is Black and White there is a lot of gray in this world. Once Harlan starts interviewing Mason and the individuals around him she starts to understand that Nature versus Nurture is a very real thing. The author does such a wonderful job of presenting her readers with a very complete and thought provoking short story. There is more to Mason than meets the eye, everyone has a past, and sometimes it pays too show a little kindness. This is my second time reading a story by this author and she always leaves her readers wanting more. I highly recommend this story as you will have a wide range of emotions.

This is a novella, but that doesn't diminish the enjoyability of the book. If you like getting into the mind of murderers, true crime, or anything else killer related, you will enjoy this book. Harlan is a tragic sort of character, but well painted. There is too much drinking (for everyone) throughout but considering the context, it makes sense. The rushed 'cliffhanger' reveal at the end could have been more impactful if the author would have waited to reveal what happened to Harley's sister until much later in the book, after we cared more for the main character. That being said the author portrays a gripping story around Mason Hubbard. At first I thought the ending was going to be unbelievable, but the author reigned it in at the end for a surprisingly acceptable end. Despite some stilted dialogue and awkward flow at times, this is a page turner.
Rating
4 Stars
This is a solid for star read; dive into the confessions of a killer and you'll be left with thoughtful moments for days.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2024With more effort, this could be four stars. It’s generally well constructed and well paced, but lacks development. The main character shows promise, but is given very shallow treatment, relying on his sister’s death in the prologue to win our sympathy. He becomes a journalist and his boss asks for the third time about a story he hasn’t finished. What story? Why couldn’t he finish? But we’re told he’s a fabulous writer so he won’t get dumped. The interview with the killer is interesting, but given the characters we’ve seen in Criminal Minds, Mindhunter, etc. our hero isn’t particularly insightful. He doesn’t seem like a seasoned professional. I certainly read through the book with interest, but wanted so much more from it, especially from our protagonist. The sequel is promising, if more time is spent bringing it to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story!
The author has created a captivating, well-written story. This book does a great job of helping you understand the emotional story behind the killer. This short story felt like It could be a documentary, and I would recommend it to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep, gritty
Well written deep, gritty, gory at times. This book following a journalist as he interviews a man on death row when in turn helps him learn a little more about how his own sister died.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it !
This book kept me engaged from the very beginning as we follow Harlan and Shane in their interviewing quest.
It’s one of those books that ends with one mystery tied up (Mason), but is left on a cliffie both for us, and for poor Harlan.
Good job Ms Peplow. I need to get the next book to see how it all ends!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a Mystery, nor a Thriller
It's a short read of literary fiction with lots of sympathy towards a heinous criminal. It repeats the proverb, "violence breeds violence." The story in this book is an articulate embodiment of the proverb. Perhaps there could have been more imageries of the violence that gave birth to a killer. Also, the end pointer to the next book in the series is too subtle and very stylish.
I expected that at least at some places the boring heavy phrase 'sound equipment' would have been called the lapel microphone/ buttonhole microphone/ wearable microphone. The first person viewpoint of a professional investigative journalist could have brought more technicalities and more edginess to the narration.
There are unexpected developmental slips. In Chapter 9, the quotes started with Dr. Discher's email, but ended with "then she hung up." Was it an email or was it a phone call? Chapter 11 has "spoke with you" instead of "spoke to you". Later in the same chapter "what he was doing" has become "was he was doing". Use of "Let’s get this show on the road" in Chapter 14 was repetitive.
The book has many dramatic images with hair raising situations that could bring chills on the spine and shiver on the shoulder. Somehow the phlegmatic narration killed the thrill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peplow should work for BBC's Panarama!
Msny years after the death of his sister, Harlan became an investigative journalist and vowed never to give up looking for her killer.
After missing several deadlines his job was on the line. Last chance saloon he was tasked to enter a maximum security prison to interview an inmate about his crimes.
A compelling short story penned with realism and believability, so much so that in your mind you could easily be watching the documentary. The author has a talent of brining out a plethora of emotions from revulsion at the crimes committed then to sympathy, understanding and sadness at the conclusion. How can you feel that for everything Mason did? Read and I'm sure you will feel the same! Well written, captivating and as the journey that Harlan is taking has only just started, hopefully so much more to come. Great read, thoroughly enjoyed!
