Moonlight Cherries (Phoenix Immortal Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 243 ratings

"I couldn’t change that I was…attracted to a guy I’d watched getting murdered on the subway."

Amory lives a quiet life as a waiter. The Moonlight Diner is the home he found after he was kicked out and disowned by his family for no other crime than who he loves.

Amory's life is shaken to its very foundations after a chance meeting that has Amory witness a murder--except the man who dies in Amory's arms doesn't stay dead.

Far from being a ghost, Soyer is very real. He pulls Amory into a world in which magic exists and wreaks havoc on the life of unsuspecting people. But within what remains of the spell that touches both their lives, Amory and Soyer may just find love.

Warning: This m/m romance contains sexual content only suitable for mature audiences. It also contains graphic depictions of violence, past experiences of homophobia experienced in adolescence, and allusions to conversion therapy.

Alexa (she/her) has a lot of characters living in her head and wanting their stories told. Many of these people get snarky and won't stop complaining if Alexa is too slow writing them, which means that for this author, sleep is a luxury. Consequently, Alexa is a coffee addict, but she is sure she has it under control (six cups of coffee are normal in a morning, right? Right!?)

Soyer says & does all the right things to get to Amory. He’s incredibly suave & I like & appreciate his emphasis on consent. However I wonder at the fact that Amory does fall for him. It happens so fast, in sketchy conditions. I’m hoping that there’s something in the 2nd book that illuminates the situation— especially how Soyer fell for Amory— even faster than Amory fell for Soyer, in the span it took Soyer to kiss Amory on the cheek. I have so many questions!

But it is a delightful book & I’m glad to have read it. Moonlight Diner is also such a charming place, I wish I had access to it in real life. Alexa Piper is a strong writer & in this book made a captivating world. (The cameo of her book Ash & Stone made me smile.) I look forward to more Amory & Soyer. Only a month & a week until the next book is released!

Alexa Piper is a new to me author and this book came highly recommended from two of my lovely bookish friends. One of them described how there was just something special about Moonlight Cherries and I have to say I wholeheartedly agree. I loved every moment of reading this book. It was just so freaking romantic! The whole dynamic of a centuries old immortal of great power falling for the innocent and oh so sweet Amory was beautiful. All the old fashioned statements and shows of affection were utterly swoon worthy. There truly is something to be said for a good old fashioned wooing and every time Soyer called Amory his heart my eyes about burst into hearts themselves.

Soyer was not alone in his sweet thoughts about his lover as you can see from the above quote. These two were besotted with one another. It didn't matter that Soyer was essentially an assassin for hire. Or that he was part of another world so to speak. He treated Amory like he was precious, like the sun rose and fell solely because of him. How could Amory not fall head over heels for him after never having experienced a true loyalty and devotion like that in his life. Heck, I might have fell a little in love with Soyer myself by the time I was done with this book. Add to it the fact that Soyer is also a bit of a bad boy? I was a total goner.

"A better man than I would walk away from you... A better man than I would have never walked toward you. But I can’t. I can’t let you go, Amory.”

Now this one ends with a sort of soft cliffhanger. We're left with a lot of questions, and the plot is left open ended with the assumption that there is more to come. I hope that means the more to come is happening sooner than later because I already miss these characters and I only just finished. This will definitely not be my last Alexa Piper book.

When you read “immortal assassin who earned his reputation”, you don’t think sweet contemporary romance with shy main characters that have found family looking out for them when said immortal assassin comes into his life to sweep him off his feet with candy sweet dates. You think adventure, exciting fights, running, explosions.

Well. It has all that. I was surprised by the sweet buildup, and delighted by the excitement when it inevitably happened. It was quite the enjoyable read and I will definitely be picking up the second book.

In a category filled with well-worn tropes, this story manages to be unique. Although I knew what Soyer was, that in no way diminished how the plot unfolded. Soyer was creepy to me for awhile, but you know from our point of view character Avory that how he appears outside this relationship is a lot different to how he appears to Avory. Every character is good, the settings are good, the worldbuilding is good and all of it is intensely personal to Avory.

I quite enjoyed this one, and will probably read the next book.

Amory and Soyer’s story is an amazing one. By this point, I’ve read a number of supernatural universe stories and enjoyed most, but this one is different, and I mean that in the most complimentary way!

This author’s universe is a unique one, and I really appreciate it. Both main characters are intense in their own way. I’ve always been a sucker for human/supernatural relationships, so this one fit me to a “T”.

It feels as though the end may be a cliffhanger, but I’m not 100% sure about that. The only way to find out is to start Book 2, and I’ll be doing that in about 5 minutes!

There are few and far between in the romance genre that stick with me. The Phoenix Immortal series, however, is an urban-fantasy-romance that really holds its own in the vast sea of urban-fantasy-romances. The series does include some of the typical romance tropes of intense stares and rich lovers with all the time they need to obsess over their love interest, but it doesn't suffer from it. Instead, the plot is an interesting meld of finding oneself, revelations of worlds within worlds, fairy-tail-esque horror, murder, mystery, comedy, likeable characters, and hate-able villains. There's plot armor, but it falls in line with the rules of the "world behind the curtain."

I've just finished my second reading of books 1-2--which is what brought me here to write a review for this series--and both times I've read them, it has felt as if I were watching a tv show. I am highly anticipating book 3, as much for the next installment to the story as the reading experience.

Another book that was much better than I expected. The writing could have been better-just some places that needed cleaned up-but the plot and the character development were pretty good.

The lives of Soyer and Amory are entwined from the moment Soyer dies on the subway, with Amory kneeling beside him and then.....revives.
Thrown away by his birth family, Amory has a job, an apartment, and his innocence. Becoming Soyer's heart changes his life in ways he could never imagine. And, when Soyer is killed with a witch's blade, Amory burns with the phoenix's fire to revive him.
    A totally brilliant story.

Wow. Just wow. First in series, it features Amory and Soyer. Soyer is a waiter at the Moonlight Diner and meets Soyer for the first time when riding the subway at night. When Soyer was killed and rose again, Amory was confused as to why. As Soyer and Amory get closer, Soyer explains about the supernatural world. Told in Amory’s point of view, it tells how his relationship with Soyer started and how well he was treated. Love the world building, great chemistry between them and some heat. I found out there is a book two and I will off to get it as I want to know more,
