Deadly Repercussions Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

From the streets of Mexico to mountains of Wyoming, Juan Velasquez does what is needed to survive and to prosper. He believes in justice and that vengeance is not always best left to the Lord.

Assassination within Juan’s family triggers a homicide investigation that sets off a chain of events leading to betrayal, kidnapping, and more death. Deception and devotion become confused, and while loyalty has benefits, it also has a cost. When Juan disappears during his unofficial search for the assassin, his granddaughter deciphers details that could lead her to him. Hesitant to share the information with authorities, Elaina sets out on her own, aware that, in the undercover world, life is a masquerade, the path to the truth is complex, and some questions are better left unasked.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Writing in a variety of genres, Black's character driven stories rarely turn out quite the way the reader would expect. The author combines imagination and experience to weave dramatic plots with believable characters in descriptive settings, whether contemporary or supernatural.

Those familiar with her prose can attest to her fascination with the paranormal. Even when it isn’t the basis of the plot, it is not unusual to find a touch of the supernatural in her books. Occasionally, the reference is so subtle, the reader could miss it.

With a passion for animals, the author includes a four-legged character in most storylines, even if just a cameo appearance. Two of Black’s novels, “Race into Murder” and “Ride into Romance,” draw on her background as a racehorse owner. Her experience at the racetrack supplies realism to the setting, the races and the characters.

Black lives in the United States with her husband, and two alien creatures disguised as cats. While each of the furry critters is unique, one of them is rumored to be ET’s second cousin. The rumor, however, has not been confirmed.

Karen Black crafted an exciting whodunit that spans decades and multiple generations. It begins with a unique character, Juan Velasquez. He was raised as a premiere tracker in the Mexican desert and broadened to the United States when he became a border agent. Over the years, he became highly sought after for finding criminals and investigating robberies. He fell in love and married. They were very in love and had a daughter, Elizabeth. After his wife was killed, he took his daughter to a remote place in Wyoming. Here, Juan crafted a secluded, secure home and taught his daughter his tracking methods; they often traveled together. Juan adopted a young man who tried to steal food and turned out to have connections with the mafia. Juan’s reputation protected him and the young man who became like a son. After his daughter and son-in-law are murdered, he hunts the culprit to protect his granddaughter, Elaina.

Ms. Black is a master at character development. Based on the role played in her stories, her unique characters are relatable, either loved or hated. The rich stories capture mystery readers' interest from page one. Juan’s investigative career allowed for complex interconnections of people over time, which kept readers guessing as the years of the story unfolded. Every question and thread is woven into a mesmerizing tapestry, filled with love, survival, death, hope, and a tenacity for justice.

Deadly Repercussions is a non-stop action-adventure tale with breathtaking scenes, heartbreaking loss, and nail-biting moments. Fans of Karen Black’s writing will recognize her perfect timing for each piece of the conundrum to align. Readers of mystery, thrillers, and vigilant justice greedily consume the story. I highly recommend this winning tale and all the other works of Karen Black I’ve read. Outstanding!

What a great story about love and redemption. Juan Velasquez grew up in the Mexican desert and built quite a reputation for himself. He is eventually hired by the ATF and becomes one of their top agents. After some years, he's ready to retire and leave the agency, wanting to buy a sporting goods store from his friend. With only days to go, he and his wife are ambushed on the way home by a recently paroled felon whom Juan arrested years ago. She was killed in the ensuing gunfight, and Juan killed the attacking felon. Now he and his daughter had to move on without a wife and mother.

The story jumps ahead and follows his daughter, Elizabeth, through life and then later his granddaughter, Elaina. Pretty much 28 years elapse during the story and people close to him are getting killed. Juan had developed many contacts over the years and is known for getting the job done. It's learned that there is a leak and somebody in the government is in cahoots with the mobsters - exposing and setting up agents. This time it's personal and there is no doubt that Juan will find the perpetrator and bring him to justice.

The author does a wonderful job of developing the characters for this tale. They are well-rounded and liked by this reader. There are also many curves and twists along the way as readers try to figure out who the snitch is. Readers will also encounter events that will cause their jaws to drop to their chests in surprise. At least mine did. I also came across some added/missing words and typos in the first half of the book, but minor and not distracting. All in all, a very good story that will keep readers engaged until the very end. Highly recommended!

This author creates an intricate, compelling whodunit featuring interesting characters who interact in surprising ways with unpredictable outcomes, keeping readers guessing at every turn.

The novel begins with the introduction of a young Juan Velasquez, raised in the Mexican desert and learning how to travel back and forth across the Mexican border. He becomes a border agent for the United States, thus beginning a long career as an investigator. He becomes known as the Chameleon, due to his ability to hide and blend in to many different situations so that he can solve crimes.

He and his wife have a child and his wife dies. He raises his daughter and his life in law enforcement continues. The author weaves situations that lead to tragedies then back to successes, then back to more tragedies in Juan's life and those of his loved ones. Encounters with criminals and their cohorts lead to death and destruction, but, in this author's hands, these are fascinating, because the way in which she weaves the incidents together construct a fascinating puzzle of interactions between Juan and many other characters.

This is not a book in which all characters I began to love and admire were immune from being the victims of tragedy themselves; however, once again, the author's skills demonstrate clearly ways of bringing everything together, from chapter to chapter, through to the end.

I can see this book becoming an interesting movie (are you listening, Hollywood?). Once again, another Karen Black success.

This stand-alone covers three generations. It is easy to follow but at times difficult to read due to emotions evoked. Minor editing errors, no gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama.

Compelling storyline with plenty of twists throughout. Descriptive writing that draws the reader into each scene. Flexible procedures, actions and reactions. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and memorable dialogue.

He wanted to pass his legacy to someone who understood that there were times that vengeance should not be left to the Lord.

“Life is a masquerade with repercussions that can be deadly.”

No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.

Think of feuds and the long string of heartbreak they can bring, and you will receive a good picture of this book about a crime family against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

The story depicts the timeline of a young man where fear, revenge, and grudges are synonymous with death. The title fits the book perfectly.

The male protagonist, a young man named Juan, is hidden quickly in the cellar by his father, Alejandro, when his uncle, Manuel, shows up to warn his brother that danger is on the way.

The death of Juan's father spins off several deaths that will happen over the years.

I found the fate of the women to be sad. One of them loses her life by taking a bullet that was intended for her husband and leaving behind her daughter, Elizabeth. This is not the only occurrence in this line of deaths in one family.

However, the story focuses more on Juan's sense of justice. Vengeance is a matter of fact, and this follows him because he's made a vow to right injustices done to those close to him.

My curiosity about Elizabeth and what would happen when she and her father moved from Texas further north to the mountains of Wyoming kept me flipping the pages.

The story didn't disappoint. It is riveting.

I did find one or two missing words in the book's first half, but they did not hinder my enjoyment.

I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy reading about mountain or vigilante justice.

I gave the story four stars.
