About the author

Writing in a variety of genres, Black's character driven stories rarely turn out quite the way the reader would expect. The author combines imagination and experience to weave dramatic plots with believable characters in descriptive settings, whether contemporary or supernatural.
Those familiar with her prose can attest to her fascination with the paranormal. Even when it isn’t the basis of the plot, it is not unusual to find a touch of the supernatural in her books. Occasionally, the reference is so subtle, the reader could miss it.
With a passion for animals, the author includes a four-legged character in most storylines, even if just a cameo appearance. Two of Black’s novels, “Race into Murder” and “Ride into Romance,” draw on her background as a racehorse owner. Her experience at the racetrack supplies realism to the setting, the races and the characters.
Black lives in the United States with her husband, and two alien creatures disguised as cats. While each of the furry critters is unique, one of them is rumored to be ET’s second cousin. The rumor, however, has not been confirmed.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2022Cloud art is the perfect activity to spark imagination and living discussion between a mother and her daughter. Amanda discovered her talent for spinning tales as a child with her best friend, Jonah. Later she explored her writing skills when she received a pen and full crystal inkwell from a flea market vendor. The gift started her journey to become a best-selling author before the age of thirty, filling the void of her parents’ deaths ten years apart. For the last year, Amanda shared her quiet home with Odin, a cat she brought in from the rain. When Amanda’s dreams of a handsome stranger bordered on the edge of reality, she began to unravel the threads of a plan that was put into motion just before her father died. The evil spirit insisted she chooses between her soul and her life.
Karen Black creates an intriguing, delightfully crafted paranormal with lifelike characters portrayed with precise words to convey pictures, and smells, that awaken the senses. Readers are captivated from page one. This short story is attached to the fingers until the unexpected yet perfect ending. You’ll never see it coming—excellent delivery and storytelling for readers of any age.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2022I was captivated from the start when young Amanda, on a picnic with her mother, spun a tale about a cat she pictured in the clouds. When they went to a fair, the author quickly built the atmosphere to a sense of expectancy with details that hinted at something extraordinary about to happen. A stranger gives Amanda an ink pen and a full crystal inkwell, a gift that helps her fulfill her dream of becoming a best-selling author. When years later, an entity tied to the pen and inkwell makes his presence known to her, she discovers the gift came with a price; one she is not willing to pay.
This well-crafted story kept me intrigued until its satisfying ending. I highly recommend this short read to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal / supernatural story.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2022This was an interesting story. Amanda is gifted a unique antique ink pen from a stranger at a flea market and makes a wish to become a successful writer. Though her dream comes true, she endures tragic events when first her father and then her mother die ten years apart. On the tenth anniversary of her mother's death, she learns that their deaths were part of a sinister plan that she unknowingly set in motion. And now, it's time to pay her next payment.
The author was quite creative in this story and did well in slowly pulling the pieces together. The characters were enjoyable, though I would have liked to have felt a bit more chemistry between Amanda and Jonah. The story was well-written and the pace made you want to keep reading. If you like stories with a twist, then I recommend reading this short story! :-)
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2022Twenty years passed since an enchanted old woman gave a young girl a special gift, one that, over time, transformed the young lady into a well-known and famous author. Unknown to her, her gift required payment of a special tariff every ten years. A demon materialized and informed the author that it is time and the next payment for the gift was due. She didn't need money. The demon only required the soul of a loved one. How does she get out of this deal?
The story is well-written and error-free. It pulled me in right away and held my interest until the end. Highly recommended to all age groups. Nice short story, Karen!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2023A lovely story with excitement, exceptional characters, and a touch of magic. Beware of gifts at your local flea market is the message, but love and friendship are the healing antidotes. Karen Black has an amazing talent for creating a lifetime within a set amount of unputdownable pages...
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2023The pace started out rather slow but after a couple of chapters it picked up and I couldn't put it down. The author gives it to you and doesn't hold back. I felt something between the ghost and Amanda. The description was almost too real. Most short stories end too soon or are lacking something. I left this read feeling satisfied.
The author gets 5 stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2022Young Amanda strives to be a writer. On a visit to a fair, she meets a vendor who gives her a magic pen and inkwell, with the promise that it will help put her well on her way to becoming a successful writer. That prophesy comes true; Amanda and her ever-present cat, Odin, stick together as Amanda's burgeoning writing career soars. Amanda's one true love has left the area and married someone else. That marriage ended in divorce; she still loves him.
Enter a mysterious--and handsome--stranger who appears in Amanda's dreams at first, but then becomes physically real. He demands she make a choice between her life and the magic pen. What transpires after that is a swirling description involving Odin the cat, the ex-boyfriend, and the magic pen.
I enjoy this author's works, whether it's a short story or a full-length novel. She has an uncanny way of creating characters and weaving them into believable tales with just the right touch of magic or mysticism. I recommend this story for anyone who wants to read a story with many surprises and terrific writing.
