About the author

Writing in a variety of genres, Black's character driven stories rarely turn out quite the way the reader would expect. The author combines imagination and experience to weave dramatic plots with believable characters in descriptive settings, whether contemporary or supernatural.
Those familiar with her prose can attest to her fascination with the paranormal. Even when it isn’t the basis of the plot, it is not unusual to find a touch of the supernatural in her books. Occasionally, the reference is so subtle, the reader could miss it.
With a passion for animals, the author includes a four-legged character in most storylines, even if just a cameo appearance. Two of Black’s novels, “Race into Murder” and “Ride into Romance,” draw on her background as a racehorse owner. Her experience at the racetrack supplies realism to the setting, the races and the characters.
Black lives in the United States with her husband, and two alien creatures disguised as cats. While each of the furry critters is unique, one of them is rumored to be ET’s second cousin. The rumor, however, has not been confirmed.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2021Author Karen Black delivers a twisted love and insanity relationship in this fast-paced short story. Ethan is the target of domestic violence by his wife of ten years, Rochelle.
As the backdrop for the story, the harm domestic violence inflicts upon a family is heartbreaking. The twists and turns give the reader pause and relief in rapid succession.
"Rochelle, however, was still asleep. She continued to snore softly as he tiptoed past the bed. The closet door slid open without a sound. Careful not to rattle the hangers, he pulled a shirt and a pair of pants from the rack, and crossed the room to retrieve his socks and underwear.
Relieved that his wife was asleep, Ethan still paused at the foot of the bed. Rochelle's ebony hair covered the side of her face, but it didn't hide her full red lips. Ethan shivered at the memory of what those lips had done just days before. The woman was as sensual as she was volatile.
With a sigh, Ethan shuffled into the bathroom to shower and shave. Dressed and ready to leave for the office, he sneaked around the bed to get his wallet and keys from the dresser. As he slid the wallet into his pocket, Rochelle sat up."
The characters are believable, and the plotline is done to perfection. It is a sad story and yet one that likely occurs more often than you might thinks. Passions can work for and against a relationship. Author Black itemizes what can happen when sanity and logic are gone in an instant. I recommend this thoughtful quick read along with other works by Karen Black.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2021TREACHEROUS LOVE: A SHORT STORY OF MISDIRECTED PASSION by Karen Black is a tale of domestic violence fueled by jealousy. Except in this case, the wife, Rochelle, is the abuser. Her husband, Ethan, is a professional and must work with females in his job. Rochelle accuses Ethan of having an affair then mentally and physically abuses him. He does everything in his power to not retaliate or file an abuse claim against her. They have been married for over 10 yrs. and both feel the marriage can be saved so they enlist the help of a therapist. The couple soon enjoys a happy marriage and adores one another until Ethan gets a phone call at home with a picnic invitation from a female, a new partner at his firm. Rochelle, upon hearing this reverts back to her former self and the jealousy makes her go ballistic. A switch is flipped and she attacked!
The author abruptly ends the story when readers are expecting more... as I did. However, as in any kind of story, the ending can proceed in a number of different ways. In this story, Karen Black is leaving it up to the reader to determine the next course of action. I wonder how many would agree with me.
It's a great story. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2021TREACHEROUS LOVE is well-written by a wonderfully gifted author. I've read some of her other works, and they/she never disappoint. My only complaint with this one is that the story was tooooo short! Yes, everything is tied up neatly as a story should be, but I was left clamouring for more. I obviously didn't read the heading that it was a "short story"; I had been expecting a novel. Thus my **** stars instead of five. But what can one expect for 99 cents? I'm a short story fanatic, so all is good, and this story IS definitely worth every penny! The story was captivating, and I couldn't put it down until I was finished. Maybe the author will continue with the characters. Give us a "part two." Well worth a dollar. I hope Karen gets lots of sales.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2020Story of jealousy...all of us know jealousy...but not like this...the next paragraph brought me more and more into the story...i needed more...and then.....
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2021The tables are turned in "Treacherous Love" by Karen Black for Ethan, a husband and a father who is domestically abused by his wife, Rochelle. The short story focuses on Ethan's angst of "walking on broken glass" whenever he has to deal with his wife's angry outbursts. An example of his trepidation when he awakes in the morning is as follows: "Like a burglar, Ethan crept through the hall. When he pushed the door open, a hinge squeaked, which promoted him to mutter an uncharacteristic, under-the-breath curse."
Even though Ethan knows he should leave his wife, he longs for the passion he once felt for her: "Ethan then shivered at the memory of what those lips had done just days before. The woman was as sensual as she was volatile." Rochelle has the characteristics of being pleasant and charming between periods of violence and could be seen as a "nice person" to others outside the relationship. However, a crisis is reached in the married couple's relationship when their young son is inadvertently hurt during one of Rochelle's outbursts, culminating in a heart-wrenching ending.
Author Karen Black has captured the angst and mixed emotions of Ethan, a husband abused by his wife. The author sheds light on abusive relationships not often discussed on social media. Some of the metaphorical descriptions highlight the fracture in the couple's relationship such as the following: "The orange reflection danced across the glass and created a kaleidoscope effect that flashed across Ethan's face and coaxed his eyes open." So that readers better understand the actions of the characters, the story could have expanded on their internal thoughts, reactions, and backstories.
"Treacherous Love" is a glimpse into domestic violence that men may experience with their partner, a twist that readers may find enlightening.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2020Liked the story as I can relate to it. I wanted it to go on. Karen's stories grab you from the start and make you not want to stop reading til you come to the end.
