Writing in a variety of genres, Black's character driven stories rarely turn out quite the way the reader would expect. The author combines imagination and experience to weave dramatic plots with believable characters in descriptive settings, whether contemporary or supernatural.

Those familiar with her prose can attest to her fascination with the paranormal. Even when it isn’t the basis of the plot, it is not unusual to find a touch of the supernatural in her books. Occasionally, the reference is so subtle, the reader could miss it.

With a passion for animals, the author includes a four-legged character in most storylines, even if just a cameo appearance. Two of Black’s novels, “Race into Murder” and “Ride into Romance,” draw on her background as a racehorse owner. Her experience at the racetrack supplies realism to the setting, the races and the characters.

Black lives in the United States with her husband, and two alien creatures disguised as cats. While each of the furry critters is unique, one of them is rumored to be ET’s second cousin. The rumor, however, has not been confirmed.

I decided to read The Hunted after reading the other reviews and I'm right there with them! What a fun short story and I'm still smiling at the wonderful ending! The author created a colorful vision in my mind and I felt like I was running right along with Yvonne! I could picture the garden perfectly - of course I do spend a lot of time in my own garden! And that snake! Ugghhhh!

I would have liked to see a little more time with Armond as they ran together through the woods - but hey, this is a short story!

Did I say I love the twisty ending! Ha ha! Nice job!

In The Hunted, by Karen Black, I found my attention gripped in the first well-penned words. As I read the fast-paced story, I was completely immersed and unable to tear myself away until the last words of the story.

As an herbalist, Yvonne uses her knowledge of plants to both help others and make a living. At night, she finds her sleep disturbed by vivid dreams in which she is pursued. The ending is a thought-provoking surprise.

This is a great read, and I am looking forward to reading more of Ms. Black's excellent work!

For $.99 I guess it was worth it. The story does draw you in and it does have a surprise ending but I found the descriptions long winded, like she was trying to add more to an already really short story. The story jumps back and forth between a dream and reality, keeping you guessing which was which but it ends so abruptly it leaves you wanting. It just seems like there should have been more. Maybe it is just me and I am just not a short story lover. I got all snuggled in to read a good book and in less than thirty minutes I was done. Disappointing. :-(

This is the first time I read anything written by Ms. Black. I decided to download it because we’re both members of a very supportive internet site, “Rave Reviews by Nonnie Jules.” Aside from the somewhat passive nature of Ms. Black’s writing, I found her short story “The Hunted” to be a very delightful read [I actually read it three times] as I enjoyed my morning mug of black Hazelnut coffee and jellied toast. If it’s done right, I can see this story becoming a novella.

As you read this short story you’re immediately sucked into it. The manner in which it has been written in creates a mental picture of what’s happening; all the sights, smells, and dialogue. However, all is not as it seems to be and the shocking reality is only revealed in the final sentence.

“The Hunted” I found out, to my pleasure, after reading this short story that it’s actually part of an anthology of short stories written by the author entitled “Long Story Short.” This is definitely going on my LONG TBR list.

Robin Leigh Morgan is the author of “I Kissed a Ghost,” a MG/YA Paranormal romance novel.

Yvonne has dreams. Or are they? The author moves from what might be a reality to what could be a dream without leaving the reader lost. Well-written. I loved the ending, which was a surprise.

A boring short story. The surprise ending is not built up to very well and has been done before and done better. The writing quality is passable - it's coherent and comprehensible, but simple and perfunctory. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

The story of Yvonne and her cat Elektra is such that it was difficult at first, to really say where the story was taking place, here and now, or in her dreams, which was real, and which was not.

I never like the approach of stories told through dreams, where all types of crazy things happen for the reader to finally find out it was all a dream. Yvonne was in and out of her dream in this story that strangely enough always continued from where it stopped. The dream was the story, so why call it a dream when it was clearly the story?

I found 'The Hunted' to be a fun read. A hard hitting short story with several enticing twists and turns, which surprises at the end with an interesting twist. The author did an excellent job building suspense and giving her story and ebb-and-flow with intermingled dark dream sequences and exciting 'live action'. Highly recommended.
