While she loves writing and researching, she is willingly interrupted by her west-coast children and adorable grandchildren. Traveling to Israel was a highlight of her life, but traveling west is her new favorite vacation location. When she’s not packing her bags, she can be found reading stories that take her away, playing too many games and puzzles on her phone (call it down time), or snuggling her lovable, mischievous cats Kody and Kaelee. She has been married to the love of her life for 47 years and counting and lives in a quiet neighborhood in southeast Michigan.

I LOVED this book from Jill Eileen Smith on Rahab’s Story. This is the first book in her series Daughters of the Promised Land, but she is also the best-selling author of three other series: The Wives of King David, the Wives of the Patriarchs, and the Loves of King Solomon. If you haven’t read any of her books before (which I have not), and you enjoy biblical/historical fiction, I believe I have found a new author to recommend. Most people only know about Rahab from what they have read in the Scripture passages in Joshua, chapter 2, and 6:25. But she is also mentioned in Matthew 1:5 in reference to the lineage of Jesus Christ (“Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab”), as well as in Hebrews 11:31 (“By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.”) The author took these brief glimpses in Scripture, her own historical research, and a lot of speculation on what might have led Rahab to the position she found herself in and wove it all together into an incredible story of despair, guilt, forgiveness, redemption, and love. I found the characters and the story line to be believable and well-crafted. I loved how Smith connected a very relevant Scripture passage from Matthew 18:23-34 (The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant) to this story. The two stories do not actually connect in the Bible; however, it fit the characters and it worked for me. Rahab’s story doesn’t end when the walls of Jericho come tumbling down. Instead, as promised by the Israelite spies sent by Joshua, she and her family are saved from destruction, and she is given a chance to begin a new life as a member of God’s Chosen People. This beautiful and amazing journey of faith–sometimes sad, sometimes uplifting–is one that you will want to read for yourself.

    I’ve been immersed in the OT for months, enjoying digging through all the new details God reveals each time I read it. I did some binge reading on fictional portrayals of Bathsheba, Esther, and Ruth several months ago while doing a Bible study on Ruth. Been eagerly seeking something on Rahab! I was happy to come across this book by one of my new favorite writers. Jill paints a believable, honest portrait of biblical figures and infuses them with the same things we struggle with — doubt, fear, sin, guilt, shame, redemption, joy, love, forgiveness, and especially mercy. I had only recently made the connection that Rahab was Boaz’s mother, and that his son (Obed) was the grandfather or King David. What a family history our savior chose to be born into! I can imagine these close generations retelling the amazing stories of Rahab and Salmon, Ruth the Moabitess and Boaz. How amazing it is that scripture records what others would have considered “embarrassing” — it is just more confirmation of the truth recorded by men through the Holy Spirit. I highly recommend this book and author to anyone who enjoys a good clean romance, even if you’re not a believer. Great read of epic historical heroes.

    The story is well written, interesting, and makes sense.

    I'll start by saying that I read this from a non-theological point of view. I was raised Christian in several different branches and felt like I had a pretty decent knowledge of the scriptures but ultimately left the church altogether. I read this as a work of fiction and also as a retelling of historical lore, the way I've read historical fiction of historic queens, princesses, and political leaders in general so I won't touch historical accuracy although I feel like the author did do a beautiful job piecing together the few bits we do know of Rahab to create this.

    It was beautiful. I couldn't put it down. It evoked such emotion from me and I felt so drawn to each and every character. At no time did I feel like any of them felt flat or like they blended with another character the way I sometimes do about side characters.

    This is definitely something I can see myself reading again and I look forward to reading her other works.

    I love biblical fiction but this story was masterful in the telling. Smith writes about the possible way a woman would become a prostitute yet refrains from penning love scenes. It seems every effort has been made to be accurate to the Bible, but as the author states, little is said about this ancestor of our Savior. I love the way she writes about the sacrifice needed to offer in obedience to God.
    Though there are no descriptive love scenes, this book is probably better read and understood by late teens and adults since abuse and prostitution are part of the storyline.
    Readers will be blessed by the mercy of God mentioned often in the story and the HEA ending. This is a keeper on My kindle and so well written and that rates 5 stars.

    Even though little is actually known about Rahab in the Bible, I think this author did very well with research and background on what we do know and we able to weave a tragic, yet redeeming story of a women that was treated poorly by so many men, yet she was able to get to to know the unknown , to her, God of Israel.
    She ended up going from a prostitute, not from her choosing, to a women given a second chance as she got to know and accept the powerful God of Israel. Her faith grew and saved her. This made up story could easily have been close to Rahab's real life situation.
    A very moving story. I really enjoyed it.
