Soldiers, Temples, and Crystals (The Newton Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

Luke Alexander's father is "missing, presumed dead." But Luke is confident that his father has set off on an adventure and needs his help. Searching through his father's office, Luke—along with his friends Nathan, a pastor's kid, and Lydia, a world traveler who knows several languages—discovers some confusing notes about Isaac Newton and finds a strange watch that once belonged to his grandfather. Knowing his archaeologist father was on the hunt for Solomon's temple, Luke and his friends decide to start a search of their own. Little do they know that their search will take them on the wildest adventures of their lives and make the stories of Solomon's temple and other biblical events seem more real than they ever thought possible. But will their adventures lead them to Luke's father, or will they only wind up with more questions than answers?

Soldiers, Temples, and Crystals is an excellent book for anyone who loves a good adventure and who wants to find the truth that is found only in God's Word. This first book in The Newton Chronicles will make history and the Bible come alive for readers both young and old.

Review

I absolutely can’t say enough great things about this juvenile fiction book. I wholeheartedly feel that this book will entertain adults, as much as it will kids of varying ages. As an adult, I was fully engulfed in each and every page and found myself hoping the book was longer! I’m excited to say that this is the first book in a series. I highly recommend “The Newton Chronicles: Soldiers, Temples, and Crystals,” by Terry Overton to readers of all ages! --Reviewed by Diana Coyle for Reader Views (02/2023)

I enjoyed book 1 of the Newton Chronicles. I think my grandkids will enjoy it as well, especially since it has more pics in the book than a usual 9-13-year-old book. I was intrigued by the connection with Newton and the space-time continuum. Kids hear about this in movies and TV shows, as well as video games. For me, I felt disappointed the kids didn't reach their goal by the end of the book, and merely went from one place to another. I'd have to read the rest of the series to see if this plot line repeats itself until they reach their goal by the end of the series. I'm curious to see how Overton sustains the interest of the reader in the rest of the chronicles. It seems predictable that they will continue to visit biblical times until the end.

This has got to be the most exciting book that I have read in a very long time. It says it is geared for the youth but it had my 62 year old heart pumping like you wouldn’t believe. I loved traveling back in the biblical times and trying to guess before you found out which time you were visiting. I am going to suggest this to my daughter because she is homeschooling my grand daughter with a Christian based curriculum and this book would be perfect. I learned so much from this book. I didn’t realize just how intelligent Isaac Newton was and I got to revisit so many Bible stories from my youth. All I can say is WOW was this book exciting, mysterious and informing. My grand daughter loves history so she is going to love this book. I highly recommend this book to all age groups. Amazing job by Terry Overton. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

What adventures these three children/youth are going to have as they search for Luke’s father who disappeared two years ago on a search for Solomon’s Temple. Where is he? Is he alive?
The kids spend time in the father’s study, accumulating clues, they wonder if there are such things as time/space continuums and quantum physics. With a few gadgets, they are about to find out.
Many times, children have curiosity and energy to ask and find the answers to questions adults set aside. Do you still have that childlike curiosity?
I enjoyed this book as an adult, and I know children and youth will enjoy visiting the places with the three young people in this series.
    Bravo, Terry!

The main characters were likeable and interesting. The journey they begin to solve the mystery of Luke's father's disappearance and find Solomon's Temple is captivating. If anything, I would have liked each adventure to be longer and more detailed -- though of course the main characters could not get distracted from their goal and stay too long in any one era! This is a great series for children to learn more about biblical settings.
