- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2023An excellently written historical novel. The author brings us into war, family endurance and romance. My attention was kept throughout the book. DESPERATE HOPE is well worth reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2023Desperate Hope is a gripping romantic historical novel that takes place during the Revolutionary War. I liked the characters, both good and bad, and found the book hard to put down once I’d started it. The pace and tension throughout are very well done and especially kept me on the edge of my seat as the story came to an end.
Highly recommended.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2022Desperate Hope by Susan Leigh Furlong ~ 4.5 Stars for a riveting Revolutionary War romance/thriller.
Gavin Cullane holds his best friend as he lies dying from his battle injuries, vows to protect Alden's family, and continue the fight for America's freedom from Britain.
Little did he know what he was getting into. Already half in love with Tansy from listening to Alden's stories, it doesn't take much for him to risk life and limb to protect her and her family. Unfortunately, he seems to put them in even more danger.
This book is one part history lesson, part spy thriller, part romance, and a lot of struggle. Whether the characters are struggling with surviving the war, hiding their work to aid General Washington, or avoiding a narcissistic British agent bent on destroying them to benefit his career, love is the glue that holds this story together.
The level of research evident in the story is a tribute to the author. Every character serves a purpose in advancing the storyline. I held my breath at some of the adventures, laughed at the children's antics, and cried a bit when tragedy struck.
The minute details take this story up a notch. I learned about hiding secret messages in covered buttons and the spy network that enabled General Washington to turn the war effort around against all odds. I confess I occasionally looked up details to see how correct they were. Amazingly accurate.
I would have liked a little more closure on a thread or two of the tale, but I feel it leaves itself open to a sequel, perhaps even a family saga.
Grab a copy of this book today if you enjoy well-researched Revolutionary War stories, with fascinating glimpses into the spy network that defeated the British, tender romance, and family bonds. You won't be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2022Desperate Hope is a compelling historical romance set in New York in 1778 during the Revolutionary War. Gavin Cullane stuck with his friend, Alden Carter, through battle, imprisonment, and Alden’s death. Gavin made a promise to do whatever it takes to survive. In that spirit he gradually works his way into becoming a colonial liaison – a man straddling both sides and hated by both. He meets Alden’s widow, Tansy, a woman Gavin had come to love through Alden’s description of her. Soon Gavin is trapped by political and military intrigue, and Tansy’s whole family is in grave danger. Gavin has nine days to execute a plan to save the family and possibly the war.
The writing in Desperate Hope was excellent. There were vivid descriptions of the details of battle and the effects of war on the citizens. Gavin’s plan to save the family and get coded information to General Washington was complex and dangerous. There was a great deal of heart-pumping action with some twists and turns. Readers can learn much about the realities of the revolution from this book. The author did considerable research, and I appreciated her attention to detail. As a work of historical fiction it is a very strong book, however, the book was promoted as a historical romance. From my perspective the romance aspects lacked emotional depth and conflicts were resolved too easily. There were sexy bits, but I felt a lack of depth there also. Ms. Furlong is a talented writer with the ability to bring history to life. Desperate Hope gets high marks for historical context and suspense, but less for the romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2022Told my whole fam last night that they need to read this book too! Talk about a page turner in the past...this is an e-reader gripper! This is a powerful book that will take one back into another time.
I confess I had never even heard of the Revolutionary War in school. My boss said it used to be taught in history class. For my generation the history starts about 1920. This was an amazing learning experience for me.
I personally loved the relationship between Gavin and Tansy. This to me is the heart of the story and what kept me glued to my reader. Had to wiki some parts of US History and was taken aback. This book is so well researched and written. A person can learn US history while enjoying a great book.
I recommend this book to everyone who likes espionage books. I think people who are fans of any intense drama will want to read this. A great book for a young person to learn from.
Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author in the hopes I'd review it.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2022A tale of love, love lost, and a new love found. Gavin loved Tansey before he ever met her. He was a soldier with Tansey‘s husband, Alden, who he promised, he would see the war to the end, and make sure his wife was OK. Tansey is strong-willed, has a way with words to make you do what she wants you to do with you thinking that it was your own idea. Gavin’s love is so strong and pure, but it takes Tansey a while to come around because she doesn’t know the real him. A really great book of finding true love for the second time knowing that your life has purpose.
