Families are dying. No matter how hard DCI Platt tries, he's not seeing a pattern; not even after his own wife and daughter are targeted.

Young Melanie has forgotten what life outside Larksford House was like. She's been in for so long. But when Toby joins the team, she starts to remember. She really shouldn't be there. Professor Hicks is delighted that Toby has made the breakthrough for him. It might actually allow Hicks to improve his own fortunes.

Bill Brown sells security; his business improves with every strike of the family killer. As fear in the community grows, Bill's ability to gain a stranger's trust comes to the fore. But what is he hiding?

As the clock ticks, can Platt get closer to the killer, and will Melanie remember the truth?

While the premise or plot may be interesting, the execution is so full of errors (grammatical, spelling, incorrect names, etc.) that it makes reading this book confusing and annoying. It took an effort to even pick it up to continue reading to the end. I kept hoping that, at least when it was finished, there would be some satisfaction to be found.

Instead, the story continues in the NEXT book, without any type of resolution. This is a story that should have been completed in one properly proofread and edited book.

I cannot justify the time or effort to continue this story, and would strongly advise the author to find a better editor or proofreader to bring his ideas to fruition in the future.

To find out the killer, you have to read Book 2, but I won't be reading it.

The writing is fairly good but needs an editor -- too many errors in grammar and repetition which distracted me. The plot seemed to jump around and was hard for me to follow. With Melanie, the same thoughts and actions happened over and over without a direction. I thought about not continuing after page 100, but stuck with it to the end only to find the story continues in Book 2.

This book needs an editor and proofreader. The author cannot decide on the age of the girl locked away and while the setting and characters are English he uses mom instead if mum amongst others.
It was particularly annoying that he is so confused as to the age of the girl who.en she was locked up.
I won't be reading any more books by this author.

I started this book with confidence that it would hold my attention through to the end. More than half way in I realized it could be half as long. Then I discovered that after 327 pages there was still no solution to the mystery of murder and mayhem. The author is asking me to read the next book - assuming that one has a satisfying ending. No thank you.

This is not book 1 of a two book series, this is half of a story. At the end of this book nothing is settled. I assume you must buy and read book 2 to find out what happens to the characters, not something I will be doing.

Could have been a great book but for the many mistakes. Characters are good but drags on a little too long especially when the storyline has not been completed.

Oh Stuart, please get a proof reader ! This story is so very, very good but also, for me, so annoying, with its oh so many spelling and grammatical errors ! As it's set in England - we don't use 'gotten' - it's 'GOT'. Apologies for comments because - Its one of BEST READS I've had in a while ! ! !

A Friend of the Family is so cleverly structured as to keep the tension high and the reader (me) turning those pages. Oh, but I have to read the next book to discover who done it... though I do have an idea. Very good. Recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
Reviewed in Australia on June 1, 2024
Why did I not read all the reviews! I CANT STAND books which don't have an ending, and you have to buy the next one. This author is not for me. There were so many grammatical errors, it was annoying. I won't be buying any more from this author.

1.0 out of 5 stars Gave up after 20 pages
Reviewed in Australia on February 28, 2024
So many errors, I couldn't read it without mentally going through the text with a red pen. Besides, I was bored and couldn't get into this novel. The characters are unlikeable (but mind you, I said the same about Vanity Fair).
