4.4 out of 5 stars 1,308 ratings

Viscount Stockley and his family remain in India. The third Maruthan war is well underway under the command of Francis Hastings. A victory will give the EIC dominance over India. A renegade French Consul is supporting the Maruthans and its up to Marty and Frances Ridgley to winkle him out. Popular support for the Maruthans against the East India Company is rife and a plot emerges but is not what it seems. The squadron and young James are kept busy combating pirates in the sea of Bengal and supporting the Army in its mission to eliminate the scourge of the Pindaris. The finale comes when Sir Thomas Stanford Bingley Raffles asks for Marty's help to found a free port on Singapore Island. Ship wrecks, a major sea battle and intrigue all play a part in this adventure.

Problem reading this book due to reader skipping chapters. Tried on three different devices. Very frustrating to not be able to read the complete book. Enjoy the series so much, but just won't know the whole story because of the technical issues.

The usual, a rousing, fast paced adventure. Also an interesting setting, mostly in India. I enjoyed it, and recommend it.

As the title of the review states - It’s another great chapter in the Stockley family saga. This time the theater of operations is Asia. Starting in India and ending in Singapore. A little bit more combat than intelligence work this time around though. Wonder what happens next to the Merry band.

Lots of action. Wish it was not as condensed as it was and more character development. Certainly interesting with the sailor with Down Syndrome. Huzzah for disability rights and emphasizing ability over challenges. Dennis is my hero!

This is an intricate, although fictional rendering, of the building of the British empire. Marty, along with his team, are fictional, but are masterfully woven into what eventually becomes history. A lot of liberty taken with the truth, but a very good read.

I did not finish this book. The last straw was talking about receiving telegraph messages. The first telegraph line in India was established in 1851 and was only 31 miles long. Needs better editors, a simple Google search is all that is needed.

One hopes that more volumes will follow. If you have gotten this far in the series, you know what to expect. This one still delivers

I think this series is over. Or at least, about to undergo a MC change from dad to son or to daughter(!).

This book is slightly too abstract, slightly too glossed-over, and reads like the author taking a victory lap with his characters.

There is no real trouble, just a lot of words spent on how our hero(es) overcame whatever difficulty we might imagine them having. (Certainly there wasn't any real difficulty, or it might have been painstakingly described.) The only thing close to a challenge was the loss of an entire ship and 25% of its crew, which rated about a single chapter, and ended with the survivors being rescued two days later.

Technically, there were few errors, but some of those errors were absolute barkers. Try to imagine, if you can, the richly be-robed, jewelry wearing, turbanned Sultan riding away from the ship on a pangolin. (scaly anteater) I'm pretty sure the intended word was "palanquin" (stretcher with a shelter on top), but it's pretty funny as written. There are a few more, maybe 8 or 10, but none quite so laugh-out-loud funny. And all in the same category, errors that involve near-homophones: valid words used in the wrong place.

Final thoughts: if you've come this far, read the book so you can see what happens. It isn't a *bad* book, per se. It's just not very exciting for those who've followed our hero through so much.

Sadly lacking in depth and terrible proofing, content is there but just not expanded on.
Either rushed or just lost interest in the series.

The book is about India and the South eastern region during the Colonial times India was slowly being taken over by the British and Raffles was just in the process of starting in Singapore. Another great adventure in this series of stories

Excellent read. As ever, Mr Tubbs put me "right there" at the heart of the action! I was quite disappointed when I came to the end, not with the book, but with the fact that it had ended!
