Olive : Christmas Quilt Brides Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 131 ratings

A woman running from her past, a confirmed bachelor determined to protect his heart, and a town committed to sharing the Christmas spirit. Can a Christmas quilt be the spark that ignites their love, melts their stubborn resolve, and uncovers their hidden desire?

Twenty-one-year-old Olive is sick of living her father's lifestyle as an itinerant preacher turned peddler. The latest tar-and-feather incident has made her desperate enough to enlist in a matchmaking venture, of all things—anything to escape further humiliation. Olive accepts a job as a seamstress in Carrie Town, Texas, where single men outnumber women thirty to one. But the last thing on her mind is matrimony. No man is going to tell her how to live her life. Olive would rather spend the rest of her life chained to a sewing machine.

The story is the first in the Christmas Quilt Brides series but each book will read well as a stand-alone. The story is a clean, inspirational story of a woman who had been corresponding with a man—and then he ends things, claiming hardships. Maybe fate has a way of righting the wrong.

Olive Chastain lost her mother when she was young and her father was a traveling preacher. While she was raised under the word of God, her life wasn’t actually easy. Traveling from location to location and existing. Then things take a turn with her father and they are run out of a town. She has worked at Counting Stars Orphanage in Collier, Tennessee as a teacher. She has been writing letters to Matthew Montgomery of Texas and just when she thought things were coming together, he lets her down.

Matthew Montgomery is a planner, and with things in decline, he accepts a position working as a stagecoach driver. The issue is that it can be dangerous and isn’t fair to continue with a letter courtship to Olive. Rather than continue, he sends his regrets and stops writing.

The story’s plot will have Olive trying to decide what her future holds. She felt there was a connection between her and Matthew and then that went away. None of the other men who are seeking a mail-order bride make her want to accept their offers. Maybe being a spinster is the only way, after all, she is twenty-one. Matthew helped his friend out, but it was time to return home and pull his load there. What a surprise to meet a new lady in town, and then learn it is Olive that he had been writing to.

“It’s time to quit sitting on the fence post. Get on or get off.”

Olive: My father likes to say you can’t defeat the demons you enjoy playing with.
Matthew: It’s not as though I enjoy worrying. But grappling with important decisions isn’t a new struggle.

This is a fun story with a great cast of characters. The relationship between Matthew and Olive won’t be easy because of the hurt caused by ending their letters. Being open and honest won’t be easy either. There is a case of the ‘green-eyed monster’ because of another gentleman who is a smooth talker, and also a friend of Olive. I enjoyed the way the Montgomery family makes the holidays special for others. The true gift of giving and allowing Christ to shine.

As I write this review my heart is full and happy with this truly wonderful story of life and faith that bring two people together!

Kimberly reminds us that God is in control and that we can trust him, as the story of Olive and Matthew begins. Olive is working at the orphanage as a teacher and feels her hopes of marriage will never happen.

Soon the chance to take a position at a dress shop in Carrie Town presents itself, Olive hopes that it may lead to a teaching position in the future.

When she meets Matt, the livery stable owner and man of several trades, it takes awhile for her to trust him.

But with the help of a magical quilt, a wonderful family, and hearts overflowing with the true meaning of Christmas, a match just might happen.

This wedding was the most beautiful I've ever read about! I cried! The groom finally had confidence to speak his heart with conviction! Unfortunately, it took the whole story for him to get there!
I was a bit surprised that this is the first in a new multi author series, yet it's really a continuation of a previous series by this one author. Either way, it's definitely worth reading! I loved it!

A second chance trope, where all ends well. Any book about quilts has my attention and this is no exception. An enjoyable read.

I loved how the relationship between Matt and Olive grew. I love how they teased and argued and made a way to come together. To be stronger for the hardships they went through. I enjoyed how they lived their faith, were mindful of each other, and strived to forgive when necessary. I loved reading the sweet and totally perfect ending.

I love Kimberly Grist! She's so godly and a gifted writer. I plan to read all her books that I haven't already. But this one doesn't seem to be a stand alone or if it is, the first chapter and some of the following is just too confusing. I couldn't figure out who some people were and what was going on. I'm sure it can be edited to make sense as a stand alone though. Ordered another book just now (a stand alone) and I'm super excited! Kimberly inspires me and makes me laugh. And best of all she points me to the Lord.
