Review
Orbit is back with another "super" powerful message - this time it's EMPATHY. Children will learn how to make this a more hospitable world. The author asks appropriate questions relating to emotions, which will help young readers understand and express their feelings.
As with the other Power books, this one fully embraces diversity, equality, and inclusion. The well-drawn characters include different genders, ethnicities, races, and abilities. The story will be relatable and enable children to emulate the theme. It is easy to read and be a frequently reread selection - due to its comforting nature.
The illustrations are engaging and fun; they correspond well with the accompanying text, even in sensitive moments. Children will love the glossy pages for tactile and visually-enhancing reasons.
The book is reasonably priced and belongs in every public and school library collection.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2025When Orbit decides to go visit some of his young friends in the park, they are so excited to see him again. They love the stories Orbit tells them and the lessons he helps them learn. This visit he wants to talk to the children about empathy. He explains that empathy is a superpower that you have and you should use with all the people you meet. You should be empathetic to others as you hope they would be to you.
Each child offers their definition of what empathy means to them. One child says that it means understanding and caring for how someone else is feeling. Another offers the idea that it is being able to see things from someone else’s point of view. Orbit reminds the children that empathy should be expressed to animals too, not just to ourselves, friends, and family members.
Opinion:
I loved this book because empathy is one of those feelings that should be applied to everyone you meet. In having Orbit explain what empathy meant, then even making it a superpower for children to really want to learn to use, it was just a wonderful idea to bring across to children. I loved, too, how Ms. Maille made certain she explained to children that empathy should also be expressed toward animals because they have feelings too. This was the perfect example how to illustrate empathy to a young child’s mind.
Another thing I loved about this book was that Orbit always picks a fun background setting to have a discussion with children. This story he picked a park the children were playing at and used it as an open canvas to allow the children to see how empathy could be applied to the people around them, even if they didn’t know that person.
The illustrations provided by Remesh Ram, the co-founder of Prayan Animation Studio, were vibrantly appealing to the reader’s eye and perfectly matched the written story. The pictures were full-paged and beautifully displayed on every single page of this enlightening children’s book. So many details could be found on each page that readers will pause to enjoy the illustrations just as much as the written story being told.
Ruth Maille is an award-winning author of The Power Of series. Her books focus on characters traits that help children develop social and emotional skills.
Overall, The Power of Empathy: Be the Friend You’ve Always Wanted is a story that will teach children that empathy given is empathy received. It is a wonderful continuation of The Power Of series, and this is a book which makes a wonderful tool to teach your child how important emotions are and that they should express them properly. It also teaches them that you need to be empathetic to everyone around you. I highly recommend this book!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2023The Power of Empathy is a beautifully written and illustrated story to teach children about the importance of empathy. It would be an excellent book for parents, teachers, & mental health/school counselors, etc to share with their children, students, or clients. I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2022Orbit goes to the park to tell a story to the kids their. They talk about empathy: what it is, what it looks like, and how it feels.
I think that there are some great examples in the book for kids to be able to understand what empathy is. The illustrations are beautiful and captivating to look at.
The majority of the book is dialogue, which is fine, however it's so stiff and scripted. There's no feeling of an actual natural conversation, it just feels like what one should say in this type of conversation.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2023The Power of Empathy is one in a series by Ruth Mailke, that helps children understand their emotions and feelings. In this book, Orbit, a friendly orb who looks like the earth from far away, is teaching his friends about empathy. This “superpower” is a bit more difficult than understanding the traits of kindness and positivity as in previous books.
Orbit, is the storyteller and is visiting children in the park. He offers some examples and asks questions that allow each child to provide their own thoughts on the subject of empathy. He puts it into a practical perspective by detailing scenarios enabling them to identify how they feel in response to various situations.
The author did a good job of making the term understandable in a wide variety of situations. I particularly liked the example of a child telling a friend about her trip to the zoo, where the other child responds that he was happy his friend got to go and that they had fun. This is an area where some children naturally may feel envious instead of empathetic.
The illustrations were very cute, (especially with the two bandaids on his head) and Orbit has a friendly face. This is a really useful, well-written picture book that can be used a a tool to help children and hopefully adults to practice empathy.
I don’t see young readers reaching for this book, but as I said it is a a wonderful tool for character education.
