Riding Out the Race: When Horses Touch a Woman's Heart (The Laura Harper Trilogy: Books 7 - 9 of The Riding Out Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

The last novel in the best-selling Riding Out series!

A crazy horse. A disabled jockey. And a priest who won’t give up on either of them.

Laura is looking forward to a quiet Christmas with her family and Father Michael.

But a crazy new horse on the farm has other ideas. Once again, the equines at Harpers’ Reunion threaten to take husband Jack’s attention away from his human family. Laura is incensed. Their daughter is about to be born any day now and he should be playing it safe instead of messing with the gelding he’s dubbed Loco!

However, Jack doesn’t get off lightly with Father Michael around. Before he knows it, the priest has thrust a disabled ex-jockey onto the tall trainer and seems to expect miracles. How can Jack use the horses on his farm to help a young man who loathes them?

Then Father Michael develops serious problems of his own, and Laura and Jack have him to take care of as well as the sullen rider.

Instead of being allowed to concentrate on preparing for her baby, Laura is pulled in all directions by the needs of others. And just as she’s about to go to hospital to give birth, another emergency arises on the farm – and this time it affects her personally.

Will this new disaster prevent Laura from making it to the hospital on time?

And can the horses he hates turn the bitter young jockey’s life around?

Horses captivated Hilary as a seven-year-old. Decades later, they still do. When her father replaced the family television with a book allowance for her and her brother, he was hoping they’d buy the classics. Hilary bought books on horses.

Every spare moment was spent in the attic, losing herself in the enchanting worlds of Ruby Ferguson’s Jill Books and the complete series of Flicka by Mary O’Hara, among others. She also purchased multiple tomes on horse care and obsessed about owning a pony.

Hilary also managed to almost fail English in school – somewhat unusual training for a future best selling author.

Happily, her childhood dreams were realized, and she has owned many horses. Her current equine soulmate, Cruz Bay, is a homebred Thoroughbred Welsh Cob cross. She competes with him in dressage and aspires to joining The Century Club one day, where the combined ages of horse and owner add up to one hundred!

Hilary’s Christian faith was growing at the same time as her riding skills improved and she rediscovered the ultimate goal: getting to Heaven. Her writing combines the beauty of horses with the truth of the Gospel and she hopes her books will encourage readers to join her in striving for that goal.

A note for readers of her Catholic books: The traditional Latin Mass is not available where she lives, so Hilary attends the Novus Ordo Mass at her local parish church, which is blessed with three holy priests who celebrate it with reverent devotion.

All of Hilary Walker's books are amazing!. Faith, love, family, and horses! All combined to make another beautiful story. I enjoyed this one immensely. I love the equine educational parts too. I have learned so much.
We have been so lucky to get to know the family of our granddaughter's physical therapy horse. We are allowed to help at the barn every week, and even help to "babysit" their horses and ponies, and a donkey, when they are out of town. The animals recognize my big green tote bag filled with apple's and carrots that I bring every week, along with various other treats. We love it there.
Thanks for the great book. Eagerly anticipating the next one!

As we live our life, we marvel at the things we are allowed to love and to share with others. We must take life as it comes knowing we're not in control,God is. Allow the author to include you and refresh you as you live with her paper family. God truly is in control. Enjoy!! I certainly did!!

I liked this book about the life of Laura and Jack Harper as they celebrate their one year wedding anniversary close to Christmas and the birth of their baby girl, Catherine. This is the final book of the Riding Out series, and the author does a great job of bringing the series to a satisfying end. I love the cover with the beautiful horse. A new character, Jordan, is introduced. He was a jockey who had a tragic accident while riding in a race where he lost his arm and now hated horses and was depressed until Father Michael got Jack and Laura to work with him to give him a reason to live. They also were boarding a horse named Loco who Jack was working with to make him less dangerous. Those were a couple of things happening in this book and several more horses and people who came to the ranch to be healed. It was interesting to read about how things worked out and I highly recommend this book for those who love horses and enjoy reading about people who have issues either physical or mental and are able to overcome their problems. I received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.

I am sad to see these wonderful characters leave my life, but i know Ms. Walker will have other great characters for us. I have enjoyed every trilogy around these people. I have learned so much about horses and the amazing people that sacrifice, more than I ever imagined, to protect their health and well-being! Even if you aren't catholic please do let that stop you from reading these books. As a Christian I feel I have learned so much about the catholic church. We all make mistakes and with God's grace we are forgiven!

Take a ranch with horses that need some kind of therapy and add a one-armed ex-jockey and a young girl getting a new horse and what do you get? You get a great story about how to raise someone's self-confidence and the realization that a jockey can do more than race.
    This is a great book.

This is my voluntary review of a copy I received from the author.

    Great characters and awesome story!
There's lots of action around the horses, with story elements taken from real life.

I love the updates on the Harper family and the snarky dialogue all around.

The author can write a great story and it seems like the characters came right off of the pages. The emotions are real.

Riding Out The Race by Hilary Walker
Story starts with Laura and she's almost due to deliver the baby.
Jack is busy with a new crazy horse. It's just Christmas day but he needs the money training the horse will bring into the ranch.
What I like about this story is the realism that happens. The accounts of the horse, injuries, therapy, treatments are all discussed in detail and actually happened to the author's horse.
Not only is the story about the horse and his health but there's a nice story also of the family and their friends.
So many that need healing head to the ranch, everything from a horse to a jockey with just one arm and doesn’t like horses.
Second Chances ... lots of inspirations.
About the author and contact links and her other works are highlighted at the end.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
