4.8 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

Jack Harper, the horse trainer, has fulfilled the terms of his penance by apologizing to his ex-girlfriend in England for deserting her when she was pregnant – and insisting she abort their baby.

But he suspects he may be atoning for something he didn’t do when she flies over to the U.S. in the hopes of rekindling their romance.

Then Joe, the teenager he helped overcome ulcerative colitis, comes back to see him, spinning Jack’s world into an emotional turbulence that he is powerless to control.

All Jack ever wants is to train horses – but once again, God has other plans for him.

About the Author

British born bestselling author Hilary Walker writes uplifting Christian fiction that transports readers into the healing world of horses. She lives on Hilton Head Island with two British bulldogs and her husband, who hopes she'll get interested in golf. No luck so far.

Horses captivated Hilary as a seven-year-old. Decades later, they still do. When her father replaced the family television with a book allowance for her and her brother, he was hoping they’d buy the classics. Hilary bought books on horses.

Every spare moment was spent in the attic, losing herself in the enchanting worlds of Ruby Ferguson’s Jill Books and the complete series of Flicka by Mary O’Hara, among others. She also purchased multiple tomes on horse care and obsessed about owning a pony.

Hilary also managed to almost fail English in school – somewhat unusual training for a future best selling author.

Happily, her childhood dreams were realized, and she has owned many horses. Her current equine soulmate, Cruz Bay, is a homebred Thoroughbred Welsh Cob cross. She competes with him in dressage and aspires to joining The Century Club one day, where the combined ages of horse and owner add up to one hundred!

Hilary’s Christian faith was growing at the same time as her riding skills improved and she rediscovered the ultimate goal: getting to Heaven. Her writing combines the beauty of horses with the truth of the Gospel and she hopes her books will encourage readers to join her in striving for that goal.

A note for readers of her Catholic books: The traditional Latin Mass is not available where she lives, so Hilary attends the Novus Ordo Mass at her local parish church, which is blessed with three holy priests who celebrate it with reverent devotion.

A very easy read with both human and animal characters, both likeable and lifelike. The story leads easily from the first book, Riding out the Devil, and leads up well towards the third in the trilogy (not named yet). The author taps into her knowledge of both horses and Crohn's Disease as one can tell by her writing.

This is a story about how we sometimes get in our own way in overcoming obstacles in our lives, and the angels in many forms that help us. We humans pride ourselves in our ability to think and make decisions, but we sometimes cloud that judgment with thoughts about ourselves, and what we think others are thinking about us. We complicate our lives by thinking too much. We need angels in human and animal forms to help us get over what we think and see things as they are. A bullied boy gains confidence from caring for horses and dogs, and a man learns to stand up for what believes and wants to start becoming the man he always wanted to be. It's through faith in our God and ourselves that moves us to have the confidence to face our challenges whether they're bullies, or demons of our own making. Kudos to the author who teaches, without preaching, these valuable lessons of life.

I actually read this one twice. Once for review and when it was released. I really enjoy the story of Jack and how he's using horses to share his knowledge on both his illness and helping teenagers overcome health issues and insecurity issues.

I'm looking forward to the next one... Because Jack has to get the girl...

The faith, loyalty, and love for horses, dogs, and also humans made this book hard to put down. Animals and Faith make life better.

This book is one of a series, but it can also standalone. The best part of this is seeing how helping someone else can help yourself.

This is a great story of a man who works with problem horses and boys. Throw in a couple of wonderful dogs and you have a great mix. Great story that includes a healthy diet for IBS sufferers.
