Riding Out the Rough: The Story of a Wounded Horse Healer (The Jack Harper Trilogy: Books 1 - 3 in The Riding Out Series) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 37 ratings

Joseph Harper said in a strong, calm voice, “Remember, son, the night is always darkest before the dawn.”

Jack’s new-found faith in God and these words from his father and are all he has to cling to after the startling revelations about Joe, the teenager to whom he has become both a mentor and father figure.

Leaked information and an unwelcome visit from his ex-girlfriend now threaten to destroy any hopes the horse trainer has of winning over Laura, Joe’s widowed mother.

Jack is forced to choose between coming clean to Laura about his past or trying to enter into a relationship with her based on a lie. She will despise him if he tells the truth, but telling a falsehood runs contrary to his religious principles.

Both roads will be rough, but which one will Jack take? And where will it lead?

Horses captivated Hilary as a seven-year-old. Decades later, they still do. When her father replaced the family television with a book allowance for her and her brother, he was hoping they’d buy the classics. Hilary bought books on horses.

Every spare moment was spent in the attic, losing herself in the enchanting worlds of Ruby Ferguson’s Jill Books and the complete series of Flicka by Mary O’Hara, among others. She also purchased multiple tomes on horse care and obsessed about owning a pony.

Hilary also managed to almost fail English in school – somewhat unusual training for a future best selling author.

Happily, her childhood dreams were realized, and she has owned many horses. Her current equine soulmate, Cruz Bay, is a homebred Thoroughbred Welsh Cob cross. She competes with him in dressage and aspires to joining The Century Club one day, where the combined ages of horse and owner add up to one hundred!

Hilary’s Christian faith was growing at the same time as her riding skills improved and she rediscovered the ultimate goal: getting to Heaven. Her writing combines the beauty of horses with the truth of the Gospel and she hopes her books will encourage readers to join her in striving for that goal.

A note for readers of her Catholic books: The traditional Latin Mass is not available where she lives, so Hilary attends the Novus Ordo Mass at her local parish church, which is blessed with three holy priests who celebrate it with reverent devotion.

The third in the series focuses less on horses and more on the relationships of Jack to the people he loves and to understanding his relationship to God. While I am not Catholic, the religious overtones in the novel encouraged me to think about my own feelings about a Higher Being and that impact in my life. These characters are flawed and human but innately good and you WANT them to be successful. A lovely Christmas Day read! Despite the author's assurance that this is the last in the series, she has left enough things open to allow for another.....What do you think, Hilary??

This trilogy was extremely inspiring, however I have to admit, I do wish I had read it before I read the "Father Michael Trilogy" as it would have fallen in place better. I have to admit though, reading both theologies has caused me to take a closer look at my own religious convictions. Thank you for inspiring me so.

I don't think I've ever read a book so fast. The story was just a fun read and the characters were so believable. I don't know about anyone else, but I still don't like Penny but I have to say her part was well written.

I also enjoyed the ending. It was happy without it being over gushing. I'll actually miss reading the jack series but it was ended perfectly.

Jack has grown in maturity from the beginning.
He sometimes is a what if kind of guy.
But with patience and learning he has been able to learn there is a lot more to life than just his own worldly.
    Wow has he ever!

I loved the Jack Harper trilogy and will miss escaping into its pages. It was a great story with characters that I could relate to easily. This is the fourth book I've read by this author and look forward to her next one.
