...and along came Alexis (MiroLand Book 32) Kindle Edition
Editorial Reviews
Review
...and along came Alexis is a good history for those of us in various trenches of the accessibility fight, a reminder of where we came from and how we got to be here. I would recommend it as part of disability reading. The voices of disabled people should remain central, and the current status of things is vital to understand to have an impact, but this filled in a lot of gaps in the backstory for me.
--ZoopolisAbout the Author
Emma Pivato spent her formal career working as a psychologist in various settings and teaching in a graduate program at Athabasca University. She also did some writing along the way, first an edited work, Different Hopes, Different Dreams (1984, 1991), Alberta stories about families having children with developmental disabilities. Later she published some academic and literary articles dealing with topics ranging from philosophical to practical - the development of a specialized wheelchair, for example. In 2013 she published her first Claire Burke mystery novel, featuring individuals with disabilities and other characters with various personality quirks. The 8th volume in this series will be out soon and the 9th is underway. But in the last few years her focus has been on putting together the present memoir …and along came Alexis, which describes the numerous joys and challenges that Alexis and her family have experienced together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Journey toward becoming more human
“I felt ruptured, torn apart. I have asked myself many times since if it was normal to feel that way – to feel like I had lost not only my daughter but also myself?” Emma Pivato
This is a mother’s story of 4-decade-long journey taken with her youngest daughter, Alexis, whose challenges date back to a missed Rubella vaccination in the mother’s early childhood and then measles during pregnancy. What is striking about this remarkable book is its honesty, the straightforward prose with which the journey is recounted, not seeking sympathy or judgment or commiseration, but from which the reader emerges with a sense of wonder and enriched faith in all that is good in human nature. It is ultimately a book that celebrates life. It is not about “disability” but the rich and humbling experience of being human, accepting that none of us have any control except the choice of our reaction. This mother has chosen to celebrate, and we are fortunate as her reader, to have been able to participate in the experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars This a powerful and moving story about a mother's love for a child. Yes, its about being human !
And Along Came Alexis is more that a memoir about a mother's experience of raising a very disabled child.
It is a very moving story in itself and has many happy and humorous moments. It is also an inspiring story that may help many other families who are struggling to help a disabled family member.
The story of Alexis involves other family members such as the father and sister of Alexis. There is much practical information about ways of giving Alexis a quality of life. For example, Alexis is blind, but loves to listen to music so her house is filled with many different types of music for much of each day. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story and one that is well written.
