- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2022The Christmas Bird, a middle grade story by Robbie Cheadle, tells the story of a South African family in financial difficulty who are willing to make sacrifices for one another’s happiness, as well for the care of a baby bird they rescue on Christmas Day. The story is told from the point of view of Stella, the eldest of four girls.
As an adult, I enjoyed the story because it was not the usual Christmas fare. In fact, The Christmas Bird, is not, strictly speaking, a Christmas story, as it takes place between Christmas and April. Instead, it begins with the ideals of selflessness and compassion associated with Christmas and does not abandon these ideals once the presents have been opened and the celebratory meal eaten.
The triggering event for the story happens on Christmas Day, when the family’s two undernourished dogs find a hoopoe’s nest and kill all but one chick. The girls’ mother calls the dogs off, and Stella rescues the chick. What was particularly striking to me in this scene was that the mother doesn’t subsequently punish the dogs for following their canine instincts. Similarly, when the rescued bird proves to have a particularly unpleasant bodily function, the mother takes it in stride and explains to the girls that it is a natural defense mechanism.
The story is narrated with vivid, specific details so that children can easily visualize the events as they unfold, including how to care for an orphaned or abandoned baby bird. I was impressed by the girls’ researching each stage of the chick’s development to ensure they were caring for it appropriately, with the end goal that the bird could survive in the wild.
As the hoopoe develops, the girls grow more attached to it, while the bird grows less dependent on them. The story then reaches a natural and satisfying conclusion. I think middle grade readers will enjoy the story and derive valuable lessons from it. I also think the story is appropriate for adults to read to younger children. If my experience is any indication, adults will appreciate the story as well!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2022The Deanne family was short on funds at Christmas time. They made the best of it until their hungry dogs found a bird’s nest and ate all but one baby chick. The family rescued the baby chick and set out to save it. I love the family’s selflessness as they put the bird's needs above theirs. It was a good lesson that giving of yourself is much more important than material possessions. This heartwarming story is perfect for sharing with a child or for beginning readers.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2023The Christmas Bird by Robbie and Michael Cheadle is a heartwarming story about a family in financial distress at Christmas time. No money for gifts and meager meals provide the template of their season. But an unexpected event brings the four daughters the best gift of all in the form of a Hoopoe baby chick. Stella, the eldest of her siblings, leads the task of caring for the baby. The girls want nothing more than to save its little life. As the seasons change, so does the chick, growing and becoming accustomed to its new family and environment. However, this isn’t where the story ends. Subtle life lessons appear throughout the pages: teaching about letting go, a choice never easy on the heart, how unselfishly giving of our time can be a greater gift than material possessions, and lastly, showing respect for nature. A delightful story for children. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2023Robbie Cheadle's book The Christmas Bird is simply wonderful! It is a heart-warming tale, and one that is appropriate for telling both at Christmas and other times of the year. The themes are deeply important, and the story is woven with care and talent. I recommend this lovely book completely!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2022Don't miss this truly charming story. With the hoopoe, The Christmas Bird hits all the right notes. The rescue of a marvelous bird, an unusual setting, sisters, all make for a lovely holiday tale.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2022‘The Christmas Bird’ is a heart-warming story of love and compassion. Stella and her sisters are celebrating Christmas when they discover a bird’s nest that had been destroyed by their dogs. Stella gently picks up the surviving baby bird and hopes to save it despite her mom’s warning that it may die of shock. They prepare an old basket into a warm nest for the little bird, feed the bird lovingly and get attached to it. The bird seems to be a perfect Christmas gift for the girls.
This short story infuses a sense of respect toward our environment. The natural instinct of caring for all the species is highlighted in a subtle manner. Loving and letting go is also underlined, as the bird grows wings and learns to be free. Written in a simple language, it is a perfect story for children if the superfluous details of the beer making process are brushed aside.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hoop of Delight
A delightful short (micro) story of an abandoned Hoopie bird found by the family's children after hearing their dogs barking up at the nest. The family go on a holiday to the seaside where they take the bird who is released to the wild ------- No, I shall not reveal the outcome. I'll leave it for you to discover.
