Abduction: A Fantasy/ Sci-fi Adventure (Zartoto Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 47 ratings

Warning: This book has more than one point of view. This book may not be your cup of tea if you prefer to avoid multiple perspectives.

While this book series might seem like a sci-fi book series, it is more of a fantasy series. It used to take place on Earth, but before I published it, I rewrote it to take place on another planet, so it only became a sci-fi book when I moved it to another planet. However, I see it as more of a fantasy series because of all the magic. This book is a fantasy series with some sci-fi in it. There is more of an explanation in the book.

This book is now in audiobook form! You can find it on Audible!

Join 30-year-old Tiffany as she's suddenly abducted by an alien to a post-apocalyptic planet. On Zartoto, a world teeming with energy vampires and blue-skinned aliens, magic is everywhere. Zartotians use body language to cast spells, adding to the planet's charm.

As Tiffany explores Zartoto, she discovers something shocking: humans have hidden magic that only comes alive on planets like this, thanks to the Head Supernaturals. There are also shape-shifting creatures like bears and wolves. Tiffany must navigate a world of wonder, danger, and compelling encounters.

In this new reality, Tiffany becomes a symbol of hope and courage. She stands up to protect her new home from an unknown threat with her new powers. The journey is not only filled with magic and bravery but also with moments of falling in love.

Join Tiffany on this incredible journey filled with magic, bravery, unbreakable bonds, and romantic encounters. As she faces impending doom, she must use all her strength to save Zartoto. Dive into this gripping story, where every twist and turn keeps you hooked until the end!

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Callie Woodridge is a Canadian author, who loves writing fantasy tales and frequently loses herself in their worlds. Outside of writing, she finds solace in traversing hiking trails and cherishing moments with her two feline companions and family.

The Zartoto series, which was started shortly before the pandemic and was completed during subsequent lockdowns, showcases Callie’s storytelling prowess. An interesting facet of her life is her love for reading and indulging in Netflix binges when she’s not penning down her own narratives.

The realization of becoming a published author fulfilled a lifelong dream for Callie. Notably, she draws from personal experiences to craft character backgrounds, subtly weaving in her own past. The characters Amber and Tiffany, for instance, carry echoes of her own childhood, with Amber’s journey in particular closely mirroring Callie’s own struggles.

Amber’s encounters with bullying deeply resonate with Callie’s own experiences of feeling socially out of sync. This feeling often stemmed from her choice of clothing, which leaned towards the masculine side - a seemingly innocent preference that somehow managed to irk people to the point of subjecting her to bullying. Additionally, her ongoing battle with her unruly, easily tangled hair contributed to these moments of unease. Despite the relentless struggle, she stood firm against the temptation of pulling her hair up - a choice that had unfortunately turned her into a target for bullying due to her appearance.

Opting to let her hair cascade down, messy tangles and all, provided her with a sort of shield, a veil behind which she could discreetly conceal her face because people called her ugly. She felt it provided her with a protection from bullies, though it brought it on more instead.

Growing up, Callie learned the hard way that people thought bullying was some sort of character-building exercise. She’d hear all these clichés like “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” whenever someone tried to mock her. It wasn’t just strangers either – people even blamed her for being bullied because of her hair. It’s like they didn’t get how messed up that was. Even her own family joined the victim-blaming parade, suggesting that if she didn’t want to be picked on, she should just put her hair up and change her clothes. They took it a step further at one point, swapping out her comfy baggy clothes for more “feminine” ones.

Though not central to her narrative, it’s worth noting that Callie’s own experiences as someone who is autistic added an additional layer to her journey. Her resilience and creative expression through storytelling have enabled her to try to shine a light on real societal issues that resonated with her, including those she faced due to her individuality and looks.

Callie Woodridge’s journey as a storyteller shows how literature can seriously change the game. She weaves bits of her own life into her characters’ stories, all while shining a light on important real-world issues.

The Fae Realm isn’t all rainbows and butterflies – it’s intentionally flawed. Callie’s got firsthand knowledge of how messed up that mindset can be, thanks to growing up with it. She took that experience and channelled it into creating the Fae Realm, making it a showcase of just how wrong and damaging that kind of thinking can be. It’s like her way of throwing a spotlight on the issues that affected her and showing the world what needs fixing.

Ok, lots to unpack here in this book. If you are looking for a sci fi adventure book then this has to be it. I can not stress that enough lol. The energy vampires had me "iffy" on the description, but I went in on the chance of reading something new. And boy was I not upset about that choice at all!

The new world that the main character dives into is wonderful and full of suprises. I love Vampures and all things of that nature to begin with, and this a completely different take, and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was very original and I was hooked once the story kept going and unfolded.

I reccommended this book to my fellow sci fi/supernatural friends and club and they are more than happy with the reccommendation!

I will 100% be looking for more works of this author as well. The world she created and emergetic and stressfull, however keeps you in line through the main characters eyes. The price point is perfect as well. If you are looking for a fun summer read, just to kill the time on a train or flight (like I did) then this is it. Not for the faint of heart as well, and if you are in an area where it rains often, this is a perfect read next to a rainy window! Have some tea and sit back and enjoy!

You can read this book as either science fiction or fantasy. Or both.

The protagonist, Tiffany, is abducted from Earth, a city in Canada in this case, by aliens from another far, far away planet named Zartoto. They use magic to move their spacecraft through rifts in space to reach Earth. They do this so they can abduct humans who protect them from energy vampires. This is because humans give off the wrong sort of energy for the vampires to feed on. They usually return the humans to Earth after a year or more, wiping their memory of the trip.

The book is a rewrite from the first edition. According to the author’s foreword, many changes occurred, especially in the first part of the book. It warns you of spoilers for the current book. It may be similar, but from the forward, it is a different enough book to count as a second edition.

It is a good story, and the main characters stand out from each other. There are a lot of characters and some point of view shifting between them. The best way I can describe the book is it feels dense. The amount of description and feelings comes through very well and there is a lot. The story line keeps you engaged and wanting to know more. It is part of a series, so the overall story doesn’t end with this book. If you want to immerse yourself in an alien civilization with many human features, due to their abducting humans for thousands of years, this is a good book for doing that.

I look forward to reading her next book in the six book series to see how some unresolved plot lines are handled. Also, how Tiffany continues to change over time as she adapts to her new world and husband, Paul. Paul is a Zartotoian who is more than a thousand years old.

Callie Woodridge’s impressive imaginative capacities are on full display in this fascinating sci-fi thriller. The protagonist, Tiffany Tremblay, is by her own account an average person: a romantic life that is quite wanting, no grandiose vision for her life, etc. All of this changes when she’s abducted by an alien race (the Zartotians) and transported to their world—a world radically different than our own. There, the reader is introduced to energy vampires, shape shifting creatures, and magic. Woodridge’s conception of these otherworldly elements is quite different than ideas readers have probably encountered in other sci-fi works; everything the reader encounters on Zartoto brings alive a whole new way of imagining life. The character changes that the protagonist undergoes are also worth noting. At first, her goal is merely to survive and find a way home. In time, however, her experiences change who she is a person. Woodridge’s writing provides powerful insights into the nature of how our mindsets and values can change in response to life events. The book was a bit long for my taste, but this criticism is something of a quibble because the author does a good job of holding the reader’s attention throughout. I certainly recommend it to anyone looking for an escape into an amazingly different world.

As many of the other reviews state - This is an interesting blend of science fiction and fantasy, set on a post-apocalyptic magical planet. The novel, centered around Tiffany's abduction to the alien world of Zartoto, showcases a unique magic system through body language and introduces intriguing concepts like Head Supernaturals. Readers should experience an immersive setting in a universe where magic and survival intertwine. I feel that this may be ideal for fans of expansive storytelling.

Energy vampires. Of course, my mind immediately went to “What We Do in the Shadows,” but this is NOTHING like those energy vampires. It’s not satire. It’s an engaging start to what I think is an epic series. The second book is next on my reading list. There’s just something unique about Abduction. When I think of fantasy, it’s either in a medieval setting like Game of Thrones, an urban setting like Dresden Files, or a completely unique world like in Cradle. Woodridge’s writing falls into the latter, but the “abduction” that brought her to the world gives the reader a frame of reference that allows them to compare it better to our world. The comparison makes the book all that more fantastical. You keep wondering if Tiffany will ever get home. By the end, you realize that getting home is not the main point of the story. Sometimes, events happen that change our lives in such major ways that going home is no longer possible. I would highly recommend this to anyone!

3.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative Sci-fi Fantasy

Abduction: Zartoto is an out-there sci-fi with a strong fantasy aspect. The story centers around Tiffany who is abducted by Daniel and taken to his planet in order to help protect his people from energy vampires. Many other humans have been abducted for the same purpose over millennia.

The author explains in the introduction that the story was originally set on earth, and later rewritten to take place on an alien planet. While the alien setting certainly makes it more interesting, there are some inconsistencies in the beginning that I feel could be a result of this. Some of them get explained as the story goes on, but they nearly had me abandoning the book in the first quarter.

Overall, the plot is intriguing and the story is original so it kept me going through slower early sections with large amounts of exposition and backstory. The pace is also slowed down by the writing itself which can be repetitive and would benefit from editing to streamline the story.

The book is also the first in a series, although the first book ends on a positive and satisfying note.

This is a thrilling fantasy adventure book that will take you on a journey into the author's mind. One day everything changed for Tiffany, and it sure wasn't dull, like the life with her unfaithful fiance. It all starts when Tiffany wakes from what she thought was a dream, as she is being launched through space at unimaginable speeds. She finds out from an alien named Daniel that she is being abducted to a planet called Zartoto because they need help from humans to save their world. This creation also has vampires, werewolves and, of course, magic. I enjoyed this book and will check out the next page-turner in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative descriptions and cool (blue) world-building

‘Abduction’ is the first in the Zartoto series from sci-if author Callie Woodridge. Starting, as so many futuristic stories do, on Earth, Tiffany Tremblay becomes entangled with a peculiar set of circumstances which ultimately ends up with her being transported to the mysterious world of Zartoto.

This is not another Earth. The planet has experienced its fair share of cataclysms, leaving two competing factions: our heroic blue aliens and the discpicable ‘energy vampires’. At this point, I was concerned that Woodridge had let her imagination loose without constraint, but it turns out she has done a great job of creating something that is genuinely unfamiliar: from the world’s inhabitants to the disconnection between its communities.

Sidekick Daniel ensures Tiffany knows the score through an early, lengthy conversation. Here we learn about all the fantastical creatures that inhabit the world, including werewolves and wielders of magic. The critical piece of knowlege is that on Zartoto, it’s not garlic but humans that ward off the pesky vampires… hence the abductions from Earth. Apparently, humans emit unpleasant vibes.

This clever story reflects the societal pressures we currently face, particularly women’s rights (and as is so common these days, the story is told through a strong, independent female lead). Yet, Woodridge has filled her story with pleasing characters (my favourite being Paul) and skillfully throws them into situations full of danger, intrigue and, of course, fantastical magic. Here is where her first genius idea comes into play: the Zartotians cast their spells using nothing more open to interpretation than body language. Well done Callie Woodridge!

Ultimately, Tiffany is destined to go native: she masters this peculiar form of magic and becomes a guiding light for the people that inhabit Zartoto, eventually saving them from probable destruction.

Woodridge’s writing is compelling, although, in some places, the relationships are slightly transactional. Even so, she provides a smooth combination of sci-fi and fantasy in what is a successful start to a long series. If you want imaginative descriptions and cool (blue) world-building, where magic sits comfortably alongside technology, ‘Abduction: Book one of the Zartoto’ is definitely for you.
