The Duke's Shield (The Duke’s Guard Book 3) Kindle Edition
Harriet Mayfield does not like being told what to do! She's been keeping their tenant farm afloat with the help of her 14-year-old son, the image of his dead father, her strength, and her wits. The last thing she needs is a too-handsome-for-his-own-good member of The Duke's Guard to ride to the rescue when a group of men arrive in the middle of the night to trample their crops and set fire to their barn!
With a hand to her side, she admits that he did arrive in time to prevent that behemoth from crushing her. What are a few broken ribs when they could have lost their farm? Maybe she could ask O’Malley to let her borrow his cousin’s .50 Kentucky long rifle.
Michael O’Malley is drawn to the feisty widow from the first. It may have started with her sunset hair and mist-laden eyes, but any Irishman worth his salt appreciates the strength of a woman who is not afraid to keep going even after the loss of her husband. Harry is the first woman he’s met since setting foot on English soil who calls to his heart while she’s butting heads with him.
When an enemy of Viscount Chattsworth threatens to ruin him, it is up to the Duke of Wyndmere’s guard stationed at Chattsworth Manor to protect the viscount and everything he holds dear.
Danger stalks in the night, but it will have to penetrate The Duke’s Shield before he will let them harm those he has sworn to protect with his strength, his heart, and his honor.

About the author

If we have not met yet, I’m delighted to meet you! Here’s a little bit about me…
I have been writing romance novels for almost half my life, well at least for the last 30 years. I’m a diehard romantic and have to confess the broad shoulders and wicked glint in the brilliant green eyes of a stranger had my breath snagging in my breast, my heart beating madly, and my future flashing before my eyes. At the age of seventeen, I’d met the man I knew I was going to spend the rest of my life with.
I write Historical & Contemporary Romance featuring characters that I know so well: hardheaded heroes and feisty heroines! They rarely listen to me and in fact, I think they enjoy messing with my plans for them. Over the years I have learned to listen to them! I have always used family names in my books and love adding bits and pieces of my ancestors and ancestry in them, too!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2023Another O'Malley member of the duke's guard, this time Michael, comes under the spell of a widow trying to keep her farm running with just herself and her son. He admires her strength and determination, but not so much her stubbornness. She won't allow herself time to heal from injuries and puts herself in greater jeopardy trying to do too much. The attacks continue, farms are damaged and the tenant farmers in peril as succeeding waves of hired killers attempt to drive them into ruin. O'Malley and Garahan have their work cut out for them, increasing patrols and strategy to capture them and trace them back to the source. O'Malley has greater concern as his attraction to the widow deepens and he fears for her safety. It's well written but the story line is getting a bit too familiar in this third book of the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2024It started with the romances of the Duke and his family, and I am so glad it continues with his guard and their loves. Love will find it's way to always.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2023This is a charming story of a hardheaded Irish guard and an hardheaded independent widow. Harriet, known to her family and friends as Harry, always was a strong willed woman. Not wanting to be told of woman's work or that she could not do somethings because that was man's work. A widow for three years, with her 14 year old son were tenant farmer's for Vicount Chattsworth. Vicious attacks on tenant farmer's brought the Duke's guard to their aid. After capturing the culprits, Michael O'Mally, head of guard, is attracted to Harry, true to form she resents his telling her she is working too hard. Through many attacks and keeping farm going they continue with mutual attraction. After both are injured in battles with hired thugs of Vicount Cellenham, they realize their love. In the end they marry.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2023Book 1 was my favorite of this series. This is a stand alone, but you will get more enjoyment reading at least the first story.
I liked the h when she was dealing with her son, but she was beyond stubborn when dealing with the H and anyone else. It's hard to like someone so pigheaded. Her son was a delight though!
The H is strong, loyal and caring. I liked the interaction between the brothers/cousins and their banter. The middle dragged for me and seemed repetitive with the H/h.
Violence, suspenseful, known villains, little on romance, enjoyable secondary characters. Lovemaking within marriage, heat level 2 out of 5. They both have endured many injuries over a short period of time, but wasn't a concern when they were making love over and over-lol.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, epilogue the next day, and some spice. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you some tidbits to decide to purchase or not. (ljb)

- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2023I recommend reading this series in order.
The Duke of Wyndmere hires personal guards to protect not only his immediate family, but his extended family as well. The Irish families of the O'Malleys, the Garahans and Flahertys are brothers and cousins. They take their work seriously as guards working for the duke. Viscount Chattsworth is the Duke's distant cousin. His estate's tenants are under attack. There is a suspect behind the attempts, and is confirmed from interrogations of the thugs he hired. Harriett Mayfield, her son and their neighbors are the first tenants to be attacked. Michael O'Malley is one of the guards who comes to their rescue. Attracted and protective of Harriett and her son, soon his heart is involved. I found the pace of the book a little slow contributing to putting the connections of the characters involved from the previous books. Contains some mild sex.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2023I love all the bonds of these families and that there is always some type of action involved. Thanks for another great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Duke's shield
Another good story about the Omalley brothers and cousins. This time, Michael, and his regard for a widowed farmer. Another excellent story had me on the edge of my seat with the fighting, but all is well that ends well! Good job done again!
