The Road Home: A Steamy Rockstar Romance (Lost in Austin Book 2) Kindle Edition
Sex and rock & roll are my top priorities. I mean, let’s face it, they’re my only priorities.
As frontman of Austin’s most popular metal band, I have it all. But when a car accident nearly kills my best friend, I’m rocketed back to memories of that horrible night, all those years ago when I lost my family at the hands of a drunk driver.
That’s trauma I’d rather leave buried, so when Nicole, aka Arson Nic, the roller derby dynamo, skates into my bed, I’m more than happy to bury myself in her sweet solace. What I don’t expect is to wake up with feelings.
When a once-in-a-lifetime tour opportunity takes me back to the Cherokee reservation where I grew up, I'll have to face the past I buried long ago if I want to take the road home to a future with Nicole.
Book two of the award-winning Lost in Austin series, The Road Home, is an interracial rockstar/roller derby romance that can be read as a standalone. It was the 2022 winner of the Readers’ Favorite Gold Medal for Romance – Sizzle and a 2022 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist for Multicultural Fiction.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Christina Berry's The Road Home is a book that had so many dramatic twists I couldn't put it down. Jake's journey through a gamut of emotions and life progress was captivating." ~Readers' Favorite

- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2022So starting off with saying that I think this is my favorite book in the Lost in Austin series. Jake is one of those characters that is so inherently likable, even when he’s being sketchy, and his journey is incredibly emotional and I loved every second of it!
Starting with the characters, this book has everything you could want. Jake is a musician, the guitar player for a local Austin band, doing guitar lessons for the wealthy people in the area to make his living. He’s Ali and Greg’s best friend, and essentially Greg’s adopted brother after the death of his parents when he was 14. This trauma and the ensuing events within his remaining family were integral in shaping his views on relationships and family. And Nicole is a guarded, badass woman, Alex’s ex (from book 1, now Ali’s boyfriend), a roller derby player nicknamed Arson Nic, and she doesn’t have the best reputation in Jake’s circle, in general.
The spice hits early in this one - definitely not a will they or won’t they type of story. But neither of them really goes into their physical relationship with more than some level of release, and not always with the best of intentions. They have insane chemistry, to be sure, but a single moment rings deeper for both of them, which in turn scares the crap out of them. Between Nicole’s history with Alex, and her own past issues that we learn of along the way, Jake has his work cut out for him as he tries to figure out how to move forward with Nicole. Meanwhile, his own haunted past, and the demons and guilt that haunts him surrounding the loss of his family play prominently in the story, as the opportunity of a lifetime puts him directly in the path of confronting his past and his Cherokee family that he hasn’t seen in years.
Both Jake and Nicole have their own issues to contend with. Their respective journeys, as well as their combined journey, are a wonderful emotional roller coaster. I found myself running the gamut of emotions, from laughter, contentment, and joy, to pain and tears. And Jake’s own journey even shifts the story into a bit of a rock star romance as things progress, which I absolutely loved, for him and for the book. Some of the topics this story touches on are most definitely sensitive, and all trigger and content warnings are listed in the beginning of the book, so please be kind to yourself. That said, everything was handled in the story with love and care, and with a completely realistic view.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2024Thought this was going to be another good story, but I became invested in the characters and their lives. Can't quit thinking about Jake and Nicole and the story of how they make a new life together. True love.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2021This is such a powerful romance, one I will be thinking about for a long time, and Jake is a hero I think would make any reader swoon. Jake may have the look of a sexy metal rocker who seems ready to hook up with any woman who wants him, but his inner life is a lot more complicated. His parents and little brother were killed in a car accident with his father at the wheel when he was a teenager; his best friend Greg became like a brother to him and Greg's wife Ari like a little sister. Only now Ari and Greg are on the verge of divorce and Jake feels unsettled, like his home base is being taken away from him. Enter tough-as-nails roller derby skater Nicole, aka, Arson Nic. The sparks fly between them right from the start, but the angry kind, until they hook up and he winds up very quickly hooked on her cool persona as well as wanting to get to know the woman underneath. Nic winds up being just as complicated, with plenty of demons, as Jake.
I loved both of these strong-willed characters and getting to know Jake's Cherokee heritage and seeing him reconnect with his community and be offered a new path professionally and personally. I don't want to give spoilers but I will say this is from Jake's POV, and packs a lot in about desire, love, family and found family. The sex scenes are explosive and there's a tenderness to the budding love between Jake and Nicole that Berry weaves throughout. Watching Jake basically grow up into his adult self and claim who he is as a man, not despite his past, but because of it, was beautiful and I highly recommend this contemporary romance. CW: Mentions of rape, drunk driving, and drug use.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2023I didn’t love The Road Home as much as Up for Air (the first book in this series), but I still thought it was a solid 4 star book. Jake Sixkiller is an inherently hot character; a Native American rock star? Yes, please! I also loved all the glimpses into the culture of Austin that I miss so much. I hadn’t thought of roller derby in years! It makes me want to go see a match. However, there were less smexy scenes in the book, which I enjoy in books. I will definitely keep reading the series, but I’m worried that they won’t live up to Up for Air.

This is more of a journey then just a read. Deeply emotional with humour and plenty of spice thrown in. I absolutely adore Jake and Nicole. They are so easy to root for and I want to be a part of their found family. I especially enjoyed the return home for Jake while on tour and the Cherokee elements. Fantastic read.

A beautiful love story. Full stop, no need to say much more. I adored Jake in Book 1 and was thrilled to follow him again. Nicole is awesome. Everyone else is cool. Just a really fabulous book. And side note - I loved the details of the Cherokee people and history plus the language - really beautiful. If you want a stunning read with heart - this is it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastically fresh concept
HURRAY!! This was no cookie cutter rockstar romance. The characters were genuinely different, and felt like real people rather than plot devices. A heroine with a temper, a hero who sometimes feels out of his depth? Sign me up! And I loved that Nic was a roller derby queen. Fantastic from start to finish.
