I really liked the book - actually, I really liked the author's writing, as I found it compelling, witty and charming. I was particularly fond of Antonia's character from previous books of the series (once I got the first one free I was hooked and bought the others as well) and I was curious whether the author could keep her fresh image and engaging personality, and more importantly just as fascinating in a new love story. I confess that I thought that creating a new love story for the same character, when the first story was so powerful, would be really difficult: how to keep the character true, honest, and at the same time make her shine, in a later phase of her life? I wondered whether she would still be fresh and surprising, and how a new love story would be believable. I must confess that I was very curious as to whether Antonia would remain just as fascinating a character as she was in the second book of the series.
I was not disappointed - the character still had freshness and a certain frankness that was very appealing, but it had more depth and the way she balanced her choices and copes with the loss of Monseigneur are really touching. The way the new love story was woven was also very realistic and it felt natural. I particularly liked how Monseigneur and their love story was somehow continued and cherished, entwined with the new feelings which she develops, and opened the way for continuing living. I found Antonia's way of speech unchanged and just as charming as in Noble Satyr, but she, as a character, was far more interesting: a mix of woman, sensuality and innocence.
The book had a great balance and it explored pretty much of the female mind, a woman's wants needs and desires, her sensuality, without being tacky.
It was a very emotional journey for the reader also, as the story feels like its real and it leaps from the pages, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Also, I would definitely continue reading books from this author and recommend other readers to do so also.

Ms Brant has a way of breathing life into the 18th century, all the way from how people dress to what they eat and drink. (I have noted with quite some pleasure how coffee drinking has developed in this series - from sipping it off dishes to now, in this book, drinking it from cups) She has also created quite some lovely characters, and Antonia is quite the charmer, if initially very melancholic. Plus points for having a heroine pushing fifty - it is a relief to have someone recognise even older people are capable of passion.
Ms Brant writes with a light touch, but this does not preclude touching upon painful subjects, and there are some scenes in this book that are difficult to read, all the more so because they represent things that did happen to women back then.
My only gripe is that of head-hopping. POV changes often, and at times too abruptly, causing some confusion to this reader. A minor quibble, but an unnecessary one, for an author as talented as Ms Brant!

Antonia, Dowager Duchess of Roxton, has been in mourning for the last three years for Monseigneur, her much older husband and love of her life. Her family is worried, but nothing shakes her from her grief until Jonathon Strang arrives for a house party. He's younger, just ten years older than Antonia's son, but the two find an immediate attraction and a slow-burn romance in this unusual love story (only because the couple is older and he is decidedly younger than she).
I loved the Georgian details and the history interwoven into the book. The author seems an expert in the history of this era and she does a lovely job of describing the dress, entertainment, and architecture of the era. I especially enjoyed the references to Sheridan's plays.
Antonia and Jonathon are well-matched, despite them both having early romantic marriages. It's nice to read a book where a previously married person doesn't despise the institution. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Mary Balogh's Westcott series for touching on some of the same themes. I always love seeing couples from previous books in a series, so it was nice to discover how Deb and Julian are doing, along with the rest of the family. It's a good book and a good series. I've already got the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Conflicted
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 11, 2015
I am reading the series in order, over last couple of weeks.so spent most of this book crying for what was lost in Noble Satyr which I loved.
It's a good book and without reading the other 2 in the series first I think I would have enjoyed it more. Maybe reading with a gap between may be easier. Because of the closeness in time between reading book 1,2 and 3 I found it hard to find this book believable, the character from book one wouldn't be like this ever. However as a stand alone or read with a gap between books of more than a couple of days, I am sure it is a great read.
It is well written, build the characters well, takes some of book 2's characters in a slightly different direction to expected one, good read. Tells a great story and a great link into book 4 which continues with family story, which is wonderful as I love to follow a single family through their life.
I really hope there are more books to come in this series, it is wonderful

The tale begins again with the enigmatic Antonia - Dowager Duchess of Roxton , adrift and hollow !

Jonathon Strang is a bold and forward man - confident and self assured of his place and mind !

The coming together of these souls is truly beautiful.

I was engrossed from the first word !

This books ought to be read in the series - Noble Satyr followed by a midnight marriage in order to truly appreciate this book !

    A 5/5 for me !

Lucinda Brant is a master storyteller
