4.4 out of 5 stars 2,790 ratings

The Earl of Salt Hendon and squire’s daughter Jane Despard share a secret past of misunderstanding and heartache. When the Earl is forced to marry Jane, society is aghast. Hopes dashed at marrying the Earl herself, she will go to extreme lengths, even murder, to destroy the newlyweds’ second chance for a happily ever after.

Another delicious Georgian gem from Lucinda Brant: High drama, deep emotion, and witty prose, all deftly sprinkled with historical detail to keep you mesmerized from beginning to end. Immerse yourself in the romance and opulence of her eighteenth century aristocratic world.

5 "Reneged Betrothal?" Stars for the story and 5 narration stars for Alex Wyndham's narration!

Containing a romance based on the misunderstanding trope, along with a suspense twist that includes a scheming, jealous relative with plans to marry the hero herself, Lucinda Brant delivers a compelling and addictive listen in the Salt Bride: A Georgian Historical Romance. This intriguing listen left me with no choice but to binge listen to this 12+ hour romance until the satisfying end even bypassing sleep to do so! Moreover, the soothing and sexy baritone voice of Alex Wyndham make this romance a fantastic choice to experience in audio format.

One night of premature, overzealous passion, and the perfect storm of ill-timed events, lead to both the happiest night and yet the most unfortunate series of events. Set in England in the 18th Century, these events eventually lead Jane Despard, a squire's daughter, to force the Earl of Salt Hendon to marry her--even if she will still be shunned by society for her sullied past. The fact that the Earl of Salt Hendon still has his own memories of that night (ones that he frequently revisits) is of little solace when he believes that Jane committed the biggest sin of all. But Salt is a man of his word and he will honor his deathbed promise to Jane's father unless he can convince Jane to release him of the obligation--a promise that he will thoroughly attempt to dissuade her from. What he doesn't know is that Jane is equally determined to go through with the marriage no matter what the consequence due to her own personal reasons.

Further complicating matters is Diana St. John, the widow of Salt's cousin and the mother of his two godchildren. Over the years, Diana has been aspiring and calculating how to further Salt's political career. Moreover, she has been effectively functioning as the Countess of Salt Hendon (in every way except for the bedroom) and fully expects to assume that role officially as soon as her scheming finally lands her the ultimate prize. Can there possibly be a HEA for Jane and Salt under the circumstances?

Alex Wyndham has become one of my favorite historical romance narrators, and his performance in Salt Bride is every bit the narration perfection that I have come to expect and enjoy from Mr. Wyndham. From his aristocratic, commanding Earl of Salt Hendon voice to Jane's sweet and loyal softer more feminine sounding voice, Mr. Wyndham is able to create spot on voices for all characters across genders. Mr. Wyndham also excels at delivering both the narratives and dialogues at just the right speed and with the appropriate pauses to make listening to this story seamless for the listener.

One plot point that I particularly enjoyed is that although this romance is based on the misunderstanding trope, the animosity between the main couple is expertly managed by Ms. Brant, so that by the time that the romance flourishes it is completely believable and heart-stirring. Additionally, I loved how Ms. Brant slowly introduces us to a whole cast of interesting secondary characters, who help round out and deepen the complexity of this story, including the couple who will no doubt be featured in book 2 of this series, Salt Redux: Lady Caroline (Salt's younger sister) and Sir Anthony (Diana's brother and Salt's brother-in-law).

All in all, the Salt Bride is a romance audiobook that historical romance lovers will not want to miss!

I love historical romance novels. I love the time period, the characters, the fashion, the hierarchies, all of it. Salt Bride is a great read; I devoured the entire novel in one sitting and I was very enchanted by the strength and misfortunes of the female lead, Jane, and her heartbreaking situation that ends up making her marry the Earl. The emotions of the characters are well-versed; the anguish, shock, and misunderstandings between them are realistic. They are in a time period where formality is a must and scandals are definite no-nos. Therefore, I found the misunderstandings that plague our main characters to be accurate. Jane couldn't tell Salt the truth, and vice versa--their relationship hangs on a thread and any revelation could thwart the whole balance off. I liked that there was so much tension between the characters, both sexual and physical.

The main antagonist is genuine--there wasn't an ounce of "good" in her that could make a reader sway upon opinion of whether to just "dislike" or "hate" her--it was a definite "hate" for me all the way. She played a dark role that is fully lunatic and frightfully obsessive. It was very well done.

The only thing that disappointed me and thus making it lose one whole star, is that while the character portrayal is realistic, it dragged on too long. I found myself skipping pages and rolling my eyes at parts that I felt were just really unnecessary. I was so captivated at first by Jane and Salt's relationship but by the middle of the book I was dying from how awful their agony became. Despite the constant lovemaking and obvious "I'm in love with you" signs, their relationship showed minimal signs of growth and trust. Their story had so much dramatic potential that could've wrenched the reader's heart straight out! And I mean, STRAIGHT OUT! I could feel the sympathy and heartache welling up inside of me for their dire situation of misunderstandings but that dam never broke and by the end of the book, (in which, the ending was very rushed), I was left feeling unsatisfied. Jane and Salt are lovely characters and their story is like a fairy tale of its own kind, but it unfortunately fell short of the magic needed to make it absolutely complete.

Fantastico.
Risposta: No, non lotteranno affatto.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 19, 2012
I absolutely loved this novel, my first by Lucinda Brant, but definitely not my last.

The period was well researched, but more importantly, the plot was good and didn't have the predictably of a lot of romance novels. The storyline just drew me in and kept me captivated from the start to when I finished in just a few days.

The wealth of characters, and there are many weaved into this novel, could only be achieved by a talented author, and was a challenge just remembering who was who I truly enjoyed. Oh I loved Squires daughter Jane Despard, the heroine who was beautiful both inside and out, but more importantly for me was, she was straight talking with no malice or cynicism.

The sexy Earl of Salt Hendon, Lord Magna Salt, described as a bear sized Earl, such a refreshing change from the slim hipped hero of most romance novels just increased his desirability. I started off hating him but soon grew to love him.

But Lucinda Brant doesn't stop there, all the characters are well crafted and believable from Diana St. John like a pantomime baddie. Her wonderful children Ron and Merry St. John to Jane's kitten Viscount Fourpaws - his fluffy lordship! Just brilliant.

There are so many aspects of the storyline which I absolutely loved but I don't want to give any spoilers. So, what I will say is this is the best and most enjoyable novel I've read in a while, (I read many) and I highly recommend this book and author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saintly heroine and square jawed hero make for great escapism
Reviewed in Australia on April 12, 2017
If you like truly evil baddies and a lots of mystery in your historical romance then this is for you. Heroine Jane is beautiful and good, almost too good for my liking. She is about to be married to Magnus, the Earl who dumped her fours years earlier after putting a bun in her oven. Jane decides to marry to help her step brother, but I never really understood why she marries the man who broke her heart and who seems to hate her. Surely her beauty and big dowry would have attracted other suitors? This is one of several plot holes, but it's easy to forgive the author because in the end the story is truly gripping.

This is one of those books where the suspense is drawn out as, layer by layer, the past tragedy is revealed. All through the book you are asking what happened to Jane's pregnancy, why did her father throw her out and why does Jane get nauseous when she smells the perfume of the beautiful Lady Diana St John? There are also two charming child characters who add a bit more life to this sometimes steamy romance. It's great escapist reading.
