The richness of the prose and the attention to all that drives the story make this a wonderful read. Threads from the past are seamlessly woven into current events as Lady Diana proceeds with her plot to unseat Jane. SALT BRIDE was the first Lucinda Brant book I reviewed and I loved it. Review

Lucinda Brant weaves a rather terrifying tale of the darkest deception planned to the most minor detail and brilliantly has us uncovering the plot right along with the characters. And then just when you feel it's safe to resurface Brant gives you this chilling story that mixes insanity with brilliance, a deadly combination. Extraordinary historical romance at its very best.

About the Author

When not bumping about Georgian London in my sedan chair or exchanging gossip with perfumed and patched courtiers in the gilded drawing rooms of Versailles, I write bestselling Georgian historical romances and mysteries (crime with lashings of romance). All are set in mid-1700s Georgian England, with occasional crossings to the France of Louis XV. I pull up the reins at the French Revolution where I lost a previous life at the guillotine for my unpardonably hedonistic lifestyle as a layabout aristo!

The books by Lucinda Brant are the first I've ever read who come as close to the quality and outstanding plots, characterizations, knowledge of the era etc that marked the Georgette Heyer novels. That's as high a compliment as I can give any author, and she has done a great job of maintaining that quality etc. So we have a wonderful new Historical Romance author who is setting a new standard. Most of the Historical Romance books are nowhere near the superb quality of Georgette Heyer, and most think you have to have lots of sex to sell, but as Georgette Heyer showed us, good stories don't need sex to sell. I look forward to many years of great Lucinda Brant novels.

As the sequel to The Salt Bride, Salt Redux moved too slowly to build the kind of delicious tension which made the first book such a fun read. That said, Salt Redux not only provides a satisfying ending to the threat of Lady Diana to the family of The Earl of Salt but also solidifies the relationship of Lady Caroline and Antony Templestowe, two characters from the first book.

I found the novel's treatment of late 18th century alcohol addiction to be very interesting and 'enlightened.' I wasn't crazy about the character of Caroline (Caro) and found her to more willful and spoiled than spunky and daring.

Bottom line: If you read The Salt Bride, you'll want to read this one too.

First - you MUST read Salt Bride before reading this book. You simply won't understand the depth of the story without it.
Second - Lucinda Brant is in a class by herself in writing a story. The characters are real, they grow over the time of the book, she makes you feel the setting and the emotions of the plot. In the Salt series, she has created a truly malevolent character in Diana St. John. Even as I thought I might guess her next move, I was rarely right. The ending had my heart pounding.
Third - Don't expect this to be simply a romance full of longing looks and sex. It's clean, yet about so much more than a quick romantic interlude. It's truly a novel with romance as its foundation, but a highly complex structure built on that foundation.

Then we were reunited with that loose fish Antony Templestowe, Diana St John's mewling little brother. He proved to be a looser screw than she was.

SPOILER ALERT: He chose to harbor a known murderer and didn't bother to notify her intended victims, his good friends the Earl and Countess of Salt Hendon, of Diana's delusion's and her escape from an escape-proof mental asylum. His actions showed a lack of integrity, honesty, and good judgment. Throughout he's wringing his hands and checking his pulse. "Oh, what to do? What to do? Even though my heart is beating like a drum, I'll look stoic or pretend I've spotted a friend across the room." He also spent an inordinate amount of time wondering about his relationship or lack thereof with Caroline, his true love. Of course, he finally gets a mental handle on the situation and saves the heroine and the day.

He's still a knucklehead, as it was touch and go there for awhile. I'd recommend the series to a friend. My emotions were on a such a roller coaster ride I couldn't put the book down. Very well done Ms. Bryant.

Note: Interesting that even in the 18th Century inmates could commit murder and walk right out of an asylum with no one the wiser.

First off, I won't summarize as others have all ready done so. Secondly, I enjoy Luncinda Brandt's writing; she has a good sense of humor and develops her characters well usually. She has enough characters to keep it interesting, but not so many as to get confusing usually. I enjoyed SALT BRIDE a few years ago, and while I hate the titel SALT REDUX, I have to say I like the story. You don't have to have read Bride to enjoy this, though the background helps (and its a good one). The hero spends most of his time dealing with his crazy madly plotting sister so the romance is a bit thin - while Lucinda does leave the bedroom door open, its only open a crack this time. All in all it was an enjoyable story, having the focus be more the relationship between the siblings, and the hero's need to make good for past mistakes versus constantly chasing his lost love, is a nice change from the regular romance format.

Lucinda Brant is an author with a rare talent for creating the right atmosphere with well-wrought characters and plots. The narration and language bridges the past and the present with effortless ease.

Many writers find a successful formula and repeat it endlessly. Not so Ms. Brant. Each novel is unique and superbly crafted. She clearly belongs in the uppermost rung of the crème de la crème of historical romance authors. Thank you, Ms. Brant.

Salt Redux is the second book in the Salt Hendon series by Lucinda Brant. You don't need to have read the first book to understand what is going on in this book. I do recommend that you do read it though. Firstly because the book is truly magnificent, and secondly because to understand the true evil of Diana St John, and to appreciate just how insane she is, you really should read about her from the very start.

This book is set 4 years after Diana's evil deeds are stopped and she is locked away in Harlech Castle in Wales. In that time she has been plotting revenge, her escape and ultimately taking what she believes is her rightful place beside Lord Salt as his countess.

While she has been plotting away, Jane and Salt have been leading a love filled life. Having children and being a happy family. There horror when they find out that Diana has escaped her prison brings forth a huge change in their lives.

Along side their doing their best to make sure Diana does no harm to them and their children, and plotting to capture her once again, there is also the budding romance between Diana's brother, Anthony, back from exile, and Caroline the woman who has loved him since she was a young girl and was heartbroken when his behaviour got him exiled. Anthony is a much changed man since he left, but his history shames him. Caroline also has secrets she is ashamed of. Both of them are worried to reveal those secrets to each other, but they must if they are to have any future together.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The romantic side was light hearted and fun which was a very necessary distraction from the darkness involving Diana and her insane obsession with murdering Jane and her children. I couldn't decide if I should hate the woman or pity her, either way though, I had my heart in my throat when her evil plans seemed to be coming to fruition.

Lucinda Brant is an amazing author, and this book like all of hers have you fully involved in the characters lives. I couldn't read this fast enough to find how it would end. I definitely recommend it, especially if you enjoy your books with both romance and intrigue.
