A lush and delicious new Alex Halsey mystery

- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2015Deadly Peril, the third instalment in the Alec Halsey Georgian mystery series, is well-developed and gripping. The book stands alone, but you'll lose a lot of reading pleasure if you don't read the first two before delving into this one. You don't actually need the other books for this story's plot, but I assure you that you will immediately buy or borrow the others after finishing this one, so save yourself the trouble of spoilers and just read the other two first. Now, to Deadly Peril. Ms. Brant takes us well outside of London, far beyond the comfort zone of the titled folk we've been hanging out with for two books. Our friends face pirates, political revolution and social upheaval, betrayal, disguise, court intrigue and many other surprises which I won't hint at so as not to spoil the story. As a historian and a PhD in ancient history (who, yes, reads fiction and romance!) I am impressed not only by Ms Brant's excellent story-telling and plot-twisting, I am cowed by the depth of her research and her attention to detail. This woman does not fool around when it comes to geographical and historical accuracy (even, and especially, when she's inventing a new country). I think one of the things that I find particularly compelling about Brant's stories is that they can be very disturbing. Brant is not in the business of sugar-coating anything. She's the real deal. P.S.: If you have the patience or if you're reading this after December 2015, I would suggest adding on the audible voice for this book. I simply couldn't wait and purchased the Kindle version when it came out, but I have listened to the audio version of the first two and they are wonderful.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2016I had really high hopes when I began reading this third book in the series. I've become a huge fan of Alec and after reading the reviews on this one expected to enjoy it even more than the first two. Let me state very clearly that the storyline is really interesting. A call for help comes from Cosmo who, along with Emily, has traveled into dangerous territory and both are now apparently being held for ransom in a province/country/territory (not sure what it was) called Midanich. In Alec's early days of diplomatic service, he had been posted in Midanich and it doesn't take long for the reader to understand Cosmo's and Emily's capture is based on Alec's mysterious time spent there and is obviously related to his former relationship with the current ruler of that country – the current Margrave (military commander), Prince Ernst. It's also obvious that Ernst's sister, Joanna, plays heavily into the mix.
From the reader's standpoint, the storyline turns a little angsty when Alec thinks back on his time there, castigating himself for what he considers some very poor behavior by himself, but toward whom? If you decide to read, you'll need to hold onto your seat because it will be some time into the storyline before the details of how and why the Margrave wants Alec back in the country and why Alec can barely bring himself to confide in those closest to him about his time in Midanich. All this of course, serves to add to the suspense in the story.
One really cool part of this story is that Alec takes on a totally different persona as "the Baron" which was quite delightful and spun out very well by the author. Another lovely part of the book is that Alec and Selina have some quality time together even as he goes about righting the wrongs in the lives of the people he loves. I really like it that Alec's and Selina's passionate love life doesn't include lots of sexually explicit details. Even so, the reader won't get much passionate physical love within the pages of this book. But, there is a remarkable steady love between the two which comes across each time they're together.
**Spoilerish** Whether or not it's fair to the author and to the book, I must confess some personal issues with this book. I found parts of this story simply too twisted for my personal tastes. In fact, parts of it took away from my overall enjoyment of Alec as my hero type. I'm not judging as to whether this will be the case for any other readers. Brant is a very talented author. But, I have a difficult time reading about former illicit sexual escapades of my "main guy" - especially when it's a very uneasy confession to the woman he loves. And, then to have to face these conquests, if you will, in person and have Alec and Selina act all friendly like none of it matters, is really against my taste. The icing on the cake of course would be the details of the backstory between Alec, Ernst and Joanna. It simply left too much sludge, if you will in my being, causing me to feel a little downturn in my emotions.
Still, Four Stars Overall.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2015Have you ever wondered if something you did in your past would ever come back to haunt you or even mean the deaths of your closest friends.
'Deadly Peril," will transport you back to a time when, Lord Alec Halsey, was just a young man who felt no consequences for his actions until it nearly meant his life but through a miracle or it seems, he manages to escape to freedom. Now, many years later like a spider's web entraps helpless victims, Alec, dear friend, Sir Cosmo Mahon and Emily St. Neots are about to become food for a very nasty and bitter spider. Can Alec save them as the country they are captive in is at war? Will bringing the woman he desires to marry, Selina Jamison Lewis, along in this what seems an impossible mission to save innocent lives mean the end of her life instead?
I advise the reading of the first two installments of the ' Alec Halsey Mystery' series to become well acquainted with all of the fascinating characters that, Lucinda Brant, author so vividly brings to life. You won't be disappointed, I promise you!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2016You can't go wrong with Lucinda Brant or the delicious hero, Alec Halsey. Tension filled intrigue, a swoon worthy hero, a bit of romance in an only slightly convoluted plot make for a delicious reading experience. There were, I felt, a few lapses into modern language and a couple of extraneous plot points, but this is overall, another fine entry into the Alec Halsey mystery series of which, I'll definitely be reading more as its published.
Bottom line: if you like your historical novels to be about more than ball gowns, weekend house parties, contrived 'misunderstandings,' and scheming to arrange a marriage to 'save the family fortune' then you'll enjoy the Alec Halsey mysteries. They're intelligent, well written and enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent !
I had not planned to write a review until I had read all four books but this one ..number three... made such an impression so here it is.I ran the gamut of emotions whilst reading it and will try my best not to give any spoilers. The opening chapters has a sense of urgency because the hero already knows he has to go to the rescue. I listened to most of the book on Audible and it did not disappoint. Alex Wyndham's voice was terrific as he did both the male and female voices. On occasion it was very funny especially when he did Aunt Olivia. As the story went on it got darker with only our hero really understanding what horrors awaited him at his destination. On top of that, there were revelations, developments, some strong nerves in evidence and displays of loyalty and friendship with a promise of light at the end of a dark tunnel. This was a story with a difference and it really grabbed all of my interest. It was different from others in this genre and was excellent from start to finish; terrific !

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars
Love love love Lucinda Brant and her Alec Halsey mysteries. Great writing, excellent story. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow is right. One of the best HRs in 2015
I'm a fan of Brant's writing, although this series has previously not grabbed me in the way that I've reacted to all her other works. In fact, if it were not for my tendency to 1- Click anything she writes, I probably wouldn't have bought this title. What a mistake that would have been. This story stands head and shoulders above the previous Halsey adventures - and they weren't bad.
There is little point reiterating the views of the other five stars reviews. It appears more sensible to share that I think the reviewer on the U.S. Site, Lady Wesley, has (mainly) got it right - I disagree only with her assertion that Deadly Peril is the best story Brant has written. Excellent though it is, I can't agree that this story eclipses Salt Bride and Autumn Duchess. However, I do agree that it is one of the best HRs of 2015 and strong evidence that Brant keeps getting better and better. A well deserved five stars.
PS I love the cover, as well.
PPS I did not receive an ARC. I bought a Kindle version from Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great characters and unforseeable twists!
This is another excellent read in the Alec Halsey series. In the two previous books I was baffled and fascinated by the complex plots and Deadly Peril is no different. In fact, the twist at the end of this one had me totally flabbergasted - totally unforeseeable! All of Lucinda Brant's books are wonderfully enjoyable thanks to the wealth of detail - whole worlds come alive in the believable characters, the clothes, the food, the transport, the attitudes and cultural mores... I always feel I've learnt a lot avout the period while enjoying a great read. I love the Roxton series too, but for sheer genius of plot the Alex Halsey series is hard to beat. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Historical? A very good read
Wanting to know more about das Land Midanich I tried Wikipedia and then Google. Then it dawned on me: The author had invented this land to serve her story. That left me with the question: What is historical? The author offers no answer in the form of references she used, or clarification about what persons actually existed, nor does she admit to her inventions.
Fortunately I did not discard the book but read it to find out whether Lucinda Brant tells a good story. She certainly does! Much of it has the good feel of being the way in which things develop and people react. Nevertheless she presents us with surprises and keeps the story moving on.
But the balance is tipped by the lack of historicity and honesty. I doubt I will ever choose this author again.
