Alec Halsey Mysteries Books 1 - 3: A Georgian Historical Mystery Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 627 ratings

Very well written, fast paced, and full of secrets… A cracking good adventure! —Historical Novel Society

The story arc of this boxed set spans three full-length novels set in the aristocratic world of the 1760's, featuring amateur sleuth Alec, Lord Halsey.

In book one, DEADLY ENGAGEMENT, Alec is unwittingly caught up in country house mayhem and murder at his estranged brother’s engagement party.

Some months later, in DEADLY AFFAIR, Alec attends a dinner party where a vicar drops dead beside him. Investigating the death of this seemingly harmless man of God, Alec makes a surprising connection to the mysterious Miranda.

In DEADLY PERIL, Alec is lured to Europe to rescue dear friends held to ransom in remote Castle Hertzfeld. In a race against time, Alec journeys across an icy wasteland devastated by civil war to “a gobsmacking finale you’ll never see coming”.

Lucinda Brant's mysteries explore the darker side of her richly authentic 18th century world. Along with her trademark wit and high drama there are deeper subplots and even quirkier characters that will have you shuddering and laughing in equal measure!

Reviews

I challenge anyone to read DEADLY ENGAGEMENT and not crave more from the handsome Alec Halsey with his high sense of morals, dark good looks, and divine analytical mind. —Francine Zane, Readers’ Favorite 5 STARS

A clever and intriguing mystery which very skillfully pulls together seemingly disparate plot threads to reach a thoroughly satisfying conclusion with plot twists I most definitely didn’t see coming. I am hooked and eager for more. —Caz Owens, All About Romance, rated a DESERT ISLE KEEPER

Every one is worthy of five stars, but DEADLY PERIL is possibly the best yet. It is, quite simply, a perfect combination of mystery, romance, and history. —Lady Wesley, Romantic Historical Reviews 5 STARS

You must not miss this series. One of the best I have ever read. You will fall in love with Alex and Selena's story, layer upon layer of intrigue and mystery. LB's main characters are so finely drawn and developed, so intricately woven with wildly fun eccentrics, people in need of rescue and lusciously evil enemies. I love the ability of her main characters to have deep conversations where they grow to know each other, their
flaws and strengths, and fall in love because of both. Lucinda's characters are smart and witty, her adventures are intricate and exciting and her landscapes are vivid and lush.

Deadly Engagement - A career diplomat, sibling jealousy, a darker side of the Regency era, murder and a puzzling whodunnit, all leavened by the hero’s love interest.

Deadly Affair - Now elevated to the peerage but uneasy in that role, Alec returns to London after a period in the country trying to put his estate in order. His absence has allowed rumours to grow that he murdered his brother and so when a guest, next to whom he was sitting at a dinner party, is poisoned, Alec is the prime suspect. Note: even less romance in this story than the first!

Deadly Peril - In order to save his best friend and a young lady, Alec Halsey is forced to return to war torn Midanich, a country he barely escaped with his life some ten years previous. He knows his friends imprisonment is a trap to get him in the clutches one again of Prince Ernst and Princess Johanna, so is not best pleased when not only his elderly uncle but his godmother the Duchess and the woman he lives tags along too.

Wow! Totally mesmerizing and immensely absorbing! I was completely transported to the Georgian period and immersed in the intrigue and politics of that era. Ms. Brant's knowledge and research of the period is evident in the details she brings to her stories, her superb writing skill brings her characters to life! Thank God for this collection of Alec Halsey books as I would have been hunting for the next in the series, so wonderfully connected they all are and I was (thankfully) able to binge read them in a couple of days! Bring on more Alec Halsey!!!

I loved these three stories! Lucinda knows how to write to keep the reader wanting more. I loved the stories with all of the detail of the people and their lives. Detail also of the world around them. If you enjoy reading how people used to live and to follow a specific family as to how they weave their lives with those around them. I hated to have the stories end! I will definitely read more of her books and please know I am a hard core mystery reader.

Really liked the first book. The second one was OK. The third book lost me. A man has to go on a dangerous mission to rescue his friends and the author sends along side characters who (unless the story jumps the shark) will only make his mission more difficult because he has to worry about their safety and the stupid things they might do. All I can figure is that the author loved the side characters so much she just could not leave them behind.

I cannot even began to describe how much I enjoyed this book set. Characters were well thought out with great description and was in love with Alec from the start and I am not a romance novel reader. This is not such but does have romance, sex, suspense, history and a few surprises . It had everything it takes to make for a can't put it down or can't wait to get back to kind of read. Loved it and hated to come to the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as a vacation

I couldn't stop reading! I enjoyed these stories very much and will probably read more by Lucinda Brant. The stories are an intriguing combination of Georgette Heyer (slightly earlier period), Dorothy Sayers, and Anthony Hope. If you don't recognize the last name, he's famous for "The Prisoner of Zenda," a book which appears to have had a noticeable influence on the third book in this trilogy. The sum total is unique and interesting, a great way to let the imagination wander freely in a world other than the one we deal with daily. Is it pure escapism? I think valuable themes can be picked up, but even if a reader deems it pure escapism, sometimes escapist literature is as good as a vacation. This qualifies.

I’ve loved all the books by Lucinda Brant, definitely keepers to re read again and again, especially like Salt Hendon books …
Only 1 thing upset me about this story, why did Emily’s maid have to die, nothing in the storyline called for that, just upsetting, everyone rescued except the woman who sacrificed herself, scolds bridal too. No, not needed.

I'm a fan of the Sebastian St. Cyr mysteries and a friend recommended this series. I started reading - and found myself lost in headhopping central. Add wooden, twodimensional characters and sloppy writing and you will understand why I gave up after ten pages. To say the story didn't draw me in is understatement of the year. It bounced me right out. Sorry.
