The Presence Kindle Edition
THIS IS HER HOUSE, AND SHE DOESN’T TAKE KINDLY TO GUESTS!
Being a disbeliever in the paranormal, Kate Thorpe has no qualms about accepting the job of live-in manager at Blackmoor Hall; the supposedly-haunted 14th-century mansion in the heart of Lancashire. After moving her family into the house, Kate starts to think of ways she can use the legend of the ghost of Jane Weston, who was burned as a witch in Elizabethan times, to turn Blackmoor Hall into a profitable business.
Shortly after moving in, each member of the family have experiences they cannot explain; doors slamming, electrical appliances tampered with, and Kate’s baby daughter pointing and laughing at seemingly empty spaces. The constant feeling that someone is watching them, particularly in Blackmoor Hall’s seemingly endless corridors, is undeniable; but that’s just the start, and their experiences soon become more terrifying. When a celebrity medium makes contact with the ghost during the filming of a televised show, she reveals that Jane Weston has not only attempted to murder one of her children, but intends to try again, and kill Kate as well.
As events unfold, it becomes clear that an evil ghost is not the only set of eyes watching their every movement within the house – and leads those that are still alive to question whose intentions are more sinister.
The Presence is a British ghost story, set in Lancashire, England, but it is far from your typical haunted-house novel. In addition to an evil spirit with a vendetta against the young family (and seemingly unlimited supernatural powers), another presence inside the house is watching their every move.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2024I really liked this book. I’m a fan of paranormal horror and this one checked all the boxes for me. Not Stephen King scary but very enjoyable.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2022Enjoyed this book, but I had no idea that you have to get the other installment to find out what happened! This is not a big deal since I liked the story. But, wow, the language that the kids used was a little weird, but I guess, obviously, the kids are older. Good book!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2022If you enjoy the paranormal, this one's for you. Could not put it down and did not see that ending coming. Kept me in suspence throughout. Highly recommend
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2022This is a very well written book and I enjoyed it a lot . It was hard to put down for long. The characters in the book seem like real people and I actually found myself worrying about them. Highly recommend. A+
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2022I guess I'm one of the few who really didn't care for it?
I didn't really find it all that creepy/scary, despite other reviewers saying how terrified they were.
I was also pretty weirded out by how the kids in the book talked. Maybe it's because the story is set in the UK but I'm not sure even kids this young in the UK curse this much. These kids were seven and eleven and literally every other word out of these kids' mouths was a curse word (the f word, b**ch etc). And I have no issue with cursing, it was just super strange to read it as casual dialog coming from these young kids, even when talking in front of/to their parents. I actually had to double check their ages at one point. I don't know, it kind of took me out of the atmosphere.
I was also a little peeved by the ending******* (POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD!)******* I went into this expecting closure and it was like suddenly it was going to be a series? It felt rushed and almost like the author decided last minute they were going to make it into a series. And I didn't like the book enough to bother waiting on a second one.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2025First of all, I loved the atmosphere and the setting of the story. Second, I loved the title—it perfectly captures what's about to happen; I can't imagine a more fitting name. That said, I felt the book could have been a little shorter. Even though it was fast-paced for the most part (except maybe at the beginning), it still felt a bit drawn out. I saw many reviewers complaining about the kids swearing, but I didn't feel any discomfort—I guess it's all about expectations and personal perception. Overall, I enjoyed the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling
Loved the fact it's based in the northwest so relatable. Characters were great, although they did swear a lot more than I'd like, especially the kids. I don't normally read this kind of book, but so glad I did. Loved every page! I can't wait for the sequel!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Presence
After not reading a book in many years (unless you count cook books and Sainsburys magazine).
This is the type of book I would have read once upon a time. I found the The Presence a bit slow to get into at first only reading about 20/25 pages at a time then suddenly I was hooked until I finally spent three and a half hours finishing it off. Having seen a few mediums in my time I felt the author was spot on in his detail and must have researched his subjects well. There is a couple on 'one liners' in there that had me howling with laughter in one particular part of the story but I won't spoil it for you. As already mentioned in a previous review I also found that sometimes the swearing didn't always match the character. On the whole I found this a good read. The ending left many unanswered questions and I feel the next addition of this book could branch out in so many different ways. I look forward to reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A scary and compulsive read.
I don't generally read scary books so this was something different for me and I found myself easily drawn into the tale. The characters were believable and the story moved on at a good pace which kept me engaged. Although I would have adamantly said I didn't believe in ghosts before reading The Presence I'm not so sure now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't read late at night
A terrifying but compulsive and original read. Blackmoor Hall is vividly described with its gloomy labyrinth of corridors and its spine-chilling atmosphere. Even Batears, the Thorpe family's fabulously named cat, steers clear of it, favouring the refuge of his equally fabulously named batcave. The Thorpe family are charismatic and I loved being in their company throughout the book. The paranormal investigations are convincing and the author seems to be something of an expert in this field. There are some truly scary moments and the ending is really clever. Enjoy it, but don't read late at night!
